Unless it's an exceptional case, someone really really popular/famous, Koreans don't seem to think much of player retirements. It's extremely minor news to them and so he didn't expect it to be a remotely big deal at all. Which is also why it's really difficult to figure out things like if players are still on teams or have retired when we haven't seen them for a while.
