You do know there are games where you rape, right? It is not different, just your opinion of it is, and we should not alter our langauge because you cannot control your emotions.
This is starcraft 2 and as far as i know, you cant rape people in it. Remember when "when cheese failed" used the R word in the first NASL season and the president of NASL had to publicly apologize or something like that?
its an offensive and distasteful word. If you kill someone in game, then you can obviously point out that you did it. but you cant make the same argument for rape.
Its about manners and common sense, not emotions.
It is emotions, because you are immediately using the definition of forcefully having sex with someone, while rape can mean everything from abuse to violate and plunder etc. You can rape someones base in SC2 for instance. It is not an offensive and distasteful word, that is your opinion. A word is a word, and its context is what could be deemed offensive, not the words themselves, which only job is to describe something. You are making a case for that rape is a more offensive word than others, and that is based on your experiences and emotions with the word, and your associations with it.
Well, he does have a point though. 'Rape'. Some words have connotations that come with them, sometimes even regardless of the context they are used in. It's not always completely in the mind of the listener.
However, I do think 'rape' in this context though [gaming/competition] is ok. Usage and all. Custom. It's tolerable.
The guy is obviously trolling..If someone wants to say 'rape' or 'butt molested', thats his/her choice..You asking will only make them say it more.
Yes, but someday someone they love will be affected in this way and they'll be the ones that prefer others not to use this slang/terminology. Just grow up and use a better word that doesn't involve imagery of someone forcibly violating someone.
Did you know rape can refer to molestation in a completely non-personal sense? For example, the French imperialists raped the Haitian natural resources. Unless you think the French literally started fucking the dirt, you'e going to need to adopt a wider view of what words mean.
Yes, and rape is also another word for canola (where the oil comes from) but come on. We all know the connection here. I'm not going around calling people "faggot" and excusing myself because it has different meanings (cigarette, pile of wood).
I'm pretty sure when I use the word "rape" to describe utterly dominating and crushing someone in the context of competition, I'm not referring to them actually having held down the opposing player and fucked them.
Yea i'm sure that's the connotation you're applying to the word, but you actually undermine your own argument because in usage/linguistics debates, an appeal to context goes both ways (ie. sensitive to both sender and receiver of a message). So there isn't any reason to not avoid potential harm on behalf of the receivers of your message. It's not the horrible terrible faux pas some make it out to be, but you can't argue for your own use by asserting only your denotation applies. Cause it will always go both ways. It just boils down to lazy/juvenile diction if anything.

Jesus, this has nothing to do with manners even. Its about being a decent human being. Rape isn't something to joke about, its horrific and it scars people for life. Its one of the worst things that can happen to someone. I have a close friend who was raped, she only recently started dealing with it. It has a daily negative effect on her. I won't say much more because, honestly, it makes me incredibly angry.
Don't use that word, not because you should be PC, not because people tell you not to, but rather because it can invoke the worst thing that has ever happened to a person.
. My father died recently, so the word death is naturally potentially upsetting for me, or phrases like 'wow you nearly gave me a heart attack', should people stop saying things on the off-chance that it can upset or offend?
was just about to write something similar. Seriously your reasoning behind not using the word is kinda stupid. If you cant tolerate a simple word in a forum then better stop reading in any forum. Nobody is joking about rape btw
This communities shitty attitude towards minorities is actually (part of) why I've pretty much stepped out of it. I straight up refused to host Destiny when he came to Texas. I went from organizing tournaments to almost 0 involvment. I'm nursing a hangover and thought I'd watch IEM, alas, that seems to be a mistake.
Rofl. Sorry, this is incredibly petty and probably more toxic than Destiny's "attitude toward minorities" which, if you've actually watched his explanation, doesn't even exist.
I don't think its petty at all. I'd rather not use a huge amount of my free time contributing to a community that is this hateful. The number of horrible comments about female friends of mine at the last event I worked confirmed my opinion. My time is better spent elsewhere.
Sorry to hear your friends were personally insulted. That's obviously a bad thing.

Well aware of that. I understand why people might be offended by the use of a touchy word. I think that's their error, though.

Incidentally I'm not sure it's even a good thing if E-sports grows to a comparable size of the biggest current sports. If it does we'll have players and casters surrounded by PR advisors and media blackouts, the personalities that make the scene will get gradually eroded and the link that exists between players and the community will be severed.

Ghosts are really tanky and have a good dps against zealots, moreover emp is pretty good and they don't take additionnal damage from Stalker. In a perfect world all your bio units would be ghosts late game.
They also have negative DPS (well, not negative, but 1/3 of unstimmed 1/5 of stimmed marine per supply when 3/3).
They're also much more tanky and EMP can drain up to like half the HP/shields of units in the first place, and they have cloaking. Plus marines versus 3/3 zealots with guardian shield are good but not so good.
The thing is you end up with a Roach counters muta sort of problem. Cheap unit with higher DPS can just inflict alot of damage while ignores army.
what? In which world 5range marines ignore colossi? At one time you've to 200/200 the P if you let the game reached that point.
HIGHER dps. you can't call marine higher DPS than colossi.
i don't understand your point at all. Do you try to argue that P has something which his better against mass ghost than against MM? Or that the P can avoid the ghosts and don't fight?
Yes. If Terran army is pure ghost P can literally just wrap in zealot all other the place and go for infrastructure. Because P don't need to worry about dealing with Terran standing army, as a pure ghost army is not really a threat against P base. Against a MM army, P can't lose fall behind on army supply or risk getting overrun.
