I don't really get the Quake Live reference though. You are only controlling one unit as opposed to RTS where you control an army as well as manage the economy. I am not saying Quake is easier, but it doesn't really fit the comparison to chess as much.
I think the reason it was said was because quake has a ton of mind games along with strategy and decision making based on the information you have. So while QL differs in terms of what you control, the mental aspect of dueling is similar to chess.

Anyone thinking Q3/QL is just about hand-eye coordination and reflexes should watch this video of Rapha explaining his game against Cooller. Incredibly strategy intense.

Saying quake is just about reflexes and hand-eye coordination is like saying starcraft is just about leaning the hotkeys
