Such a sloppy game from cloud. Amazing defense from the early warpgate pressure. He had SUCH a chance to turn that around but instead throwing away his entire army because of a 1a into axslavs nat...then not emping the dark templars when all 6-7 of his ghosts were all at full energy. Disappointing to watch.

ya, im incredibly curious, i've never even heard of HoN till a few days ago. i even got a friend who has never heard of it either to watch it with me ^^
Yeah, I'd love some explanation of the terms these guys are using. The gameplay seems relatively easy to understand, even if I have no idea what the heroes are doing. The commentary might as well be Swahili though.

some of the big items in this particular game are:
BKB/Shrunken Head = Activation that makes you immune to magic(there are a couple abilities that go through this Shrunken)
Kuldra's Sheepstick : Pretty amazing intelligence item, has activated "CC"(crowd control) that turns them into a sheep for a few seconds
Portal Key : Has an activated ability that portal's you to a spot you click on, has pretty good range but by no means is the entire map or even very far, if you play LoL at all, it's about 3x farther than flash? Hard to say.
Tablet of Command: Allows you to push yourself, a team mate, or an enemy, it's a great "support" item, and lets you do some cool tricks at the high level of play.
On October 07 2011 13:57 FinestHour wrote: wells its definitely way too complex to try to address broadly, if you had anything more specific in mind that you were curious about?
Yeah, definitely far more complex than I can absorb in a single game. But I'm afraid I can't even really understand who is winning, or what the players are trying to do, or why. Which I'm okay with, it's interesting to watch. But aside from not knowing anything, I'm not really learning anything either from the commentary.
Edit: Thanks for the help BlueBird, that's good reference.
I played dota occasionally like more than 5 years ago, so I recognize the basic concepts, but there's plenty of game-specific stuff I have no idea about.

Does complexity have any chance at all in this match or is this just a slow death?
sheepstick is the disabling item that the teal player (torturer played by korok) picked up, its one of the most powerful disables in the game and extremely expensive, so that the fact he farmed it up so early is extremely big.
a global ultimate is one that can be used anywhere on the map, no matter where the location of the fight or the hero. in this case, bombardier is able to drop his bombs into any fight, any time
complexity does have an extremely good chance of winning this game. their lineup revolves around zephyr and corrupted disciple staying safe and getting farmed because those two are extremely powerful carries that require time and farm before they become effective, which is why they are getting trounced in these early battles. as the commentators are discussing now, once corrupted and zephyr get too buff, they can easily rip through the opposing team with no problem and its up to EZ to keep up the pressure to stop them from getting the farm they need

Sheep = Sheepstick / Hex, its an item that turns a hero into a sheep and stops it from doing anything for a few seconds.
Yellow wards = Gives vision, there is a cooldown on them so u can't buy as many as you want so they are valuable. Blue wards = Reveals invisible. Good for taking out enemy wards and spotting invisible heroes.
Ultimate = A powerful skill that you can choose level 6 and 11 and 16. Global = Has unlimited range, for example Thunderbringer ultimate hits all enemy heroes all over the map.
Are there any global limits on items, or do items like sheepstick consumable or have a very long cooldown?
BTW, the HoN pages aren't that helpful to viewers like me. I want to see summary analysis of each hero, or even better a matrix that describes the role of each hero. I also want to be able to search for heroes and items by name.

www.honwiki.net is pretty good for searching for heroes/items, though it doesn't really show the general role of each. If you just ask though, I or anyone else can probably give a summary of the role of any hero you have a question about.
There's no in-game limit on items like sheepsticks, some tournaments used to put a limit on them as a tournament rule, but the majority of tournaments don't have a limit rule on items anymore.

every item has its own range. there are consumables that are for health regen early in the game such as potions. most items last in your inventory forever once they are bought and created. sheepstick is a permanent item.
As somebody who played the original DoTA years ago, and who has watched a few DoTA2 streams over the last week, i'm having a much much harder time following HoN. Even considering that the only difference is different heroes (and items?) the animations and graphics are much more distracting and messy.
This doesn't say anything about the balance of the game, but it certainly is less visually pleasing to a casual observer of the genre. LoL is even better in this department.
The low quality just compounds this (of the stream for non premium). NASL might benefit to allow higher quality base videos for HoN since at this quality it is almost unwatchable and they, in theory, actually care about growing HoN on some level. Revealing it to a new audience where they can barely see what is going on when on this very website I can just go click on a DoTA2 userstream for free and see very high quality version of a similar game isn't wise.

The quality of the stream is definitely a huge impact. I've played HoN a lot and can easily identify everything on most streams, but this stream is just really bad quality. :/ Very hard to see anything because of it.

I can second this, HoN its very easy to see whats going on, its mainly a stream quality issue.
Ugh... still this huge problem in this game, and the others, of having difficulty telling who is on what team in huge battles.
Would it be that hard to give each team blatantly different colored health bars? Having each member of one team have only dark red health bars and having the other team have dark blue health bars?

That obviously has an impact. I"m just not a fan of the huge auras around so many characters really flashy effects. Moreso than DoTA.
I've heard good things about HoN balance tho that's why i'm watching.

well, all i can say is once you watch/play enough of it, it becomes no problem. i do agree that the bad quality stream only adds to the problem but not much we can do about that.
Don't want to even put HoN and LoL spectator modes in comparison (because LoL is basically non-existent) - but I also agree that HoN would benefit from having each team with set colored health bars...the tiny red/green outlines over the Hero's level is barely visible (especially for free viewers). Also, I wish they didn't change the hero portraits with the skins and kept those as default (took me a double take to realize Accursed was playing from the team avatars alone).

This is a really good point! I have played HoN alot, and still there are a few skins that even I don't recognize. Must be really confusing for somewhat new viewers.
Hmm, so far it just doesn't seem as intense as SC2 (or BW for that matter). It's like each game is expected to last at least 30 minutes with heroes slowly getting more powerful and with well defined end games due to the heroes chosen.
In SC2, comebacks are more exciting because it's usually the strategic and insane multitasking skills of the player that forces the situation, not because of something expected like carries. With that said, there are definitely well defined stages of the game, but it depends a lot on the strategies chosen and the fact that strategies can change mid-game (unlike the fixed heroes) really differentiates each game.
I almost didnt dare to watch it since I thought coL would take it after such a epic beginning for EZ, but they held on and won, but it was pretty close
Hmmm, it's free to play so I guess I'll go download it and try to learn what's going on. Glad I watched though, it was interesting and got me to check out a new game.

That first game was a bit longer than most games. The majority of pro games last around 30-45 minutes, not 55 or whatever that last one was. EZ made a comeback however because of how well they did everything in their teamfights. CoL should have won because of Zephyr, but they didn't because EZ ended up playing better towards the end. So it wasn't necessarily because of carries getting farm that made the comeback happen.

Be aware of the pretty harsh community in the game, it is not forgiving. I by no means mean to scare you but if you get flamed or whatever in game, especially if you are a new player and do something wrong. Dont take it to hard since the HoN community is full of elitists/trolls.

there is a teamliquid clan that you can join if you want, i had some bad experiences with some of the members so i left but the majority are nice people. in the beginning though as you start up, get ready for one of the steepest learning curves for any game (and therefore much flaming/anger/rage towards you) you have ever played. just dont get discouraged
usually the poly ult is for trapping enemy heroes so you can get them immobilized and kill them. but in that situation he surrounded himself by those dangerous high dps wards and the two enemy heroes got too cocky and got taken out
tempest was invisible and managed to get his ult off on two of those heroes, completely disabling them for 4 seconds and letting poly trap both heroes with the wards and getting an easy 2 kills

Yeah Pharaoh ended up in that hole there and the game pushed him to the other side rather than the side he was on already. Wasn't really anyone's fault. :p

lot of wasted farm for the posthaste when you can get more critical items earlier in the game like the stormspirit, and strider allows such easier roaming ganks

I don't agree with him being the best late game hero besides chronos though, but whatever.
his skills might not scale the best into late game, but he has so many other incredible strengths. such a fast attack animation, an escape mech, one of the highest farm capacities with runed. just outfarm the other carry and smack em around

this is just sad to watch hb still having 0 items after 40 minutes, theres no reason why parasite and bubs cant help with the wards. such wasted potential
On October 07 2011 16:12 Ruscour wrote: I haven't played in a while, what did they do to Runed Axe? I saw it went on cooldown for a little while.
It can cut down trees at melee range like a logger's hatchet now (but can't attack creeps or cut trees at range like the new hatchet) so the cooldown is just for that.
Good casters, though their first cast should've been more newbie friendly. Games were pretty interesting, but the "downtime" between battles was kinda boring (all the creeping and farming).

Once you understand the game better the downtime is where you analyse...tower count, items, how the game is progressing etc. These games were pretty farm-heavy, wait until you see really aggressive push/gank strategies, then it's non-stop awesome.
