I was there today and enjoyed the good games. What I did not enjoy was the following. I'm not sure if the incident has been mentioned before.

If you watched the stream you probably saw how enthusiastically Socke was greeted by the fans. The crowd got heated up by Take even more.
Don't get me wrong, while I wouldn't call myself a fan I have nothing against Socke, I enjoyed quite a few games of him. But as an anti-nationalist I don't see why I should root for him because of where he was born.
When Puma entered the stage there were quite a few "boo"-shouters. I don't know if they did it because of the EG "scandal", because he is Korean or simply because he was Sockes opponent and they would have done it against anyone else.
When I cheered for Puma after good actions by him, showcasing his superior play, I in fact earned angry reactions. Just because I was for the wrong player. Again, this might have been anti-EG, it might have been anti-Socke's opponent, but the point is, it doesn't really matter.

I don't know if the following was on the stream:
In the commercial break between the second and third match Take entered the stage to announce that there had been attempts of glaring Puma with a laser pointer while the second match was going on. Take said that if they were continued they would send everyone away and let the players end the series backstage to assure the matches could be played under fair conditions. They actually had an IEM guy stand in front of Puma in the third match to prevent further incidents.

Now, while I am a political person, I usually try to not let that interfere with my hobby. If people have to root for a player because of his home country I let them have their fun, as long as they don't hop on the "No Koreans at MLG!"-bandwagon or shit like that. But today a line was crossed for me when I experienced hostility because I rooted for the "wrong" player. The laser pointer act might have been executed by a stupid troll, but it might as well have been a overzealous Socke fan.

My point is: I am disgusted by even the possibility of this being a trend in the esports community. What if that weren't just a few stupid individuals? I hope that every esports fan who witnesses behavious similar to what I described in this post distances him- or herself from it and feels ashamed if people not related to esports see them as representatives of our hobby and scene. Please do everything to keep esports positive, international and open to everybody, and first of all: keep it revolving around the fun!

this makes me pretty disappointed in the sc2 community.

Being a decent BW pro is already a big accomplishment. MC can't even keep his head above water in BW league.

Broodwar achievements have no relevance here. At all. Be more subtle with your BW elitism.

It is relevent. And what's the point of being subtle on that?

Actually no it's completely irrelevant since they are completely different games. It's like saying Grubby has more accomplishments in WC3 so obviously he's accomplished than thorzain in sc2.

WC3 and SC2 are complete different games. SC and SC2 are not completely different games, SC2 is sequel of SC, in case you didn't notice.

The three best sc2 players were horrible in sc1. Obviously there isn't a direct skill transfer and your BW achievements really say nothing about how well you're gonna do in SC2.

The three best sc2 players are 3 of the best bw players who have actually switched over though...Yeah they weren't very good in bw but they were better than any of the other shitty bw players who switched.

Better than Boxer, Nada, or July? .....No.....just no.

People keep bringing this up, but those guys were far past their peak when they switched over. They were not better than guys like MVP and MC at the time of switch.

I think it's safe to say that even at their lowest, they were each still stronger players than "The Suicide Protoss".

This.

What happened is absolutely disgusting. The kid has enough problems with his nerves but to have to put up with this shit too? I'm a fan of neither Puma nor EG, but I hope that Puma's MLG reception will be much better. If I were going, I'd make it my goal to cheer my voice hoarse for him.

Can't believe there are dicks like that in the SC2 community. Ugh.

Good luck to both Puma and MC tomorrow. Won't be able to catch the games unfortunately, but I hope the games are awesome.

Laser pointers are a problem in soccer too. Not too much you can do about such easily concealable items.

Laser pointers used on Puma WTF?

They should just seal off the booths from crowd view and only let the crowd see a video camera shot of the player's heads.

Imagine if Puma lost a game because he was lasered in the eye by someone in the crowd. It would've ruined the whole tournament, since they would have to kick out all the fans and play in solitude.

Now I understand why the first 2 games puma won because of socke's mistakes and in the 3rd game I saw puma purely outplayed him. there is a reason behind this and here u go.

They need booths first.

It would have been terrible if Puma lost because of that.

Yeah I was kinda dissappointed. Although I must say that take has to take part of the blame in my eyes. Because he way over-hyped socke and that made puma almost look like the evil korean. And the crowd went with it, kinda sad

But I'm very confident that we will see a much better crowd, since there is no more german in it ^^

No offense take if you're reading this, I love what your doing, but you kinda overdid it

you can't blame him though, take doesn't seem to know all to much about the korean players / the korean scene in general+ he's one of the biggest biased ppl when it comes to foreigner vs korean^^

He's socke's teammanager, as well^^

But IM also very pissed that puma got harrassed with a laser pointer, those are the ppl who ruin esports.... He's just a 20year old kid from korea who loves the game wants to make some easy money and gain exposure to raise his popularity in the foreign community

Are you kidding me? At least MC was given the opportunity to appear in proleague as late as 09-10 and he did well in individual league qualifiers.

Nada, July, and Boxer weren't doing anything in that time period because they sucked . . . a lot . . as much as the B teamers of that time . . .

That reminded me of when the guys on SotG ranted about people booing at the console games at MLG. I love the guys, but they don't see that if they hype everyone up to tell everybody that SC is the best game and has the best fans and what not they also produce behavior like this. Those are two sides of the same coin. People WILL act negatively towards others. And I don't want to paint everything black, but I'm afraid that at next gamescom things get even more out of hand when there are people rooting for the "wrong" player...

Are you kidding me? At least MC was given the opportunity to appear in proleague as late as 09-10 and he did well in individual league qualifiers.

Nada, July, and Boxer weren't doing anything in that time period because they sucked . . . a lot . . as much as the B teamers of that time . . .

lol what the fuckkk are you talking about
MC: http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/details.php?section=korean&type=players&id=640&part=games&league=standard

Nada in 09-10: http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/details.php?section=korean&type=players&id=147&part=games&vs=all&league=standard&map=any&from_year=2009&from_month=10&from_day=3&to_year=2010&to_month=7&to_day=12&action=Update

July 09-10: http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/details.php?section=korean&type=players&id=117&part=games&vs=all&league=standard&map=any&from_year=2009&from_month=1&from_day=25&to_year=2010&to_month=6&to_day=11&action=Update

Nada appeared in ProLeague a lot more often and he won >50% in that season while MC won 0%.
July didnt show in proleague (keep in mind STX > MBC) but at least he performed just a tiny bit in individual leagues while Iron/MC didnt accomplish anything. He was certainly pretty bad, just not quite MC lvl bad.

Boxer only appeared twice in 09-10 season but at least he won one of those games, whjile MC appeared thrice and lost all three.
Meanwhile Boxer is mostly coaching the biggest team in proleague while Iron doesnt really do anything except practice for himself.

Now dont get my wrong, I like MC a lot but your claim that he was better than those players in BW at any point in time is damn ridiculous.
