After facing an incursion of the ZeNEX team last week, TL Open was faced with the largest Korean invasion yet. ZeNEX, SlayerS, and PSW made their way into the tournament and once again dominated the top rankings. Several members of the Prime team had also planned to play, but only PoltPrime - GSL Super Tournament champion and top three Terran in the world - was able to play.
In the end, it wasn't any of the later wave Koreans who took home the first place prize of $100. It was Hwangsin, who debuted in the TeamSpeak TL Open #16 as the lone Korean entrant, who claimed his second TL Open championship. He defeated ZeNEXHack in the final, who was unfortunate to take the silver two weeks in a row.
Among the 'foreign' contingent, Nerchio, Lalush, and Shadow played well to reach the top eight, but it might have been KawaiiRice who had the most impressive run. He knocked out Korean pros SlayerS_drugbird and ZeNEXNaya in earlier rounds, before being eliminated by fellow American Shadow in the RO16.
Also worth noting, was the not-quite-pro Korean clan PSW. After a poor showing in the previous tournament, two of the team members - Mystic and Phantasm - placed in the top eight.
Players who perform well in TL Opens #16 - #28 will receive invitations to a future $1000 tournament.

uhmm... i didnt know check in closed so quickly... i thought i could check in 15 minutes before so i set my alarm clock at 12.... just as it closed =/ there any way an admin could check me in? =/
Yeah check in was bugged I think it told me players could register until 12 ET and then once that ran up it said I didn't check in. Kinda sucks I was looking forward to it
Checkin must've been glitched..it definitely said we could check in AT 12. Why could we register until 12 and not be able to check in during the 12:00-12:15 time?

Also 1/5 Prime members checked in...lol
On the page of registered players it said:
Check-in opens: Saturday, Jul 02 5:30pm CEST (now!) Check-in closes: Saturday, Jul 02 6:00pm CEST
EDIT: This is of course for my locale, but should be 11:30, 12:00 for you. Maybe some other page had incorrect info. Sad to see so many people miss check-in (though it happens normally). Especially most of the prime guys.

The registration page was fine, but the yellow bar at the top said players could register until 12. I thought it was unusual, but didn't pay attention too much until check in was over at 12.
Just saying so it's fixed in the future even if it sucks not being able to play

Viewer numbers are usually a decent indicator of the quality of a stream (cast, players, quality, etc.). If you have no idea who to look at just open a couple of the streams with a decent viewer number (this is not to say that the less popular streams are necessarily worse).

e; Nvm, i guess MKP will play in NASL, so if Polt is playing here, MKP is going to be in NASL S2
Isn't the NASL qualifiers casted from replays? I'm pretty sure I heard Khaldor say that he had to wait for the replays to be sent to him?
All players are playing at the same time ( 19:00 CET -> in 30 mins ). Khaldor casted 2 matches LIVE, and rest from replays, cuz players played it without any other caster.
So i guess, MKP just choose NASL over TSL Open #18

Alright, I see. Thanks for the clarification . I can understand MKP's choice, they probably talked about it (Polt & MKP), giving one of them the NASL spot, and one of them the TL Open win (Yes, Poltimus will crush! ).

I will be quite surprised if Polt really gave up his NASL spot to MKP. It will be a weird situation, for sure, because if he plans to play the game, it will have to be between TLOpen games.

it was pvz on shakuras, and incontrol did forge FE. He also pylon blocked the natural of the zerg. The zerg just went straight and got his 3rd instead of his natural and incontrol had a probe hidden there, and cannoned that expo. The dude called inctrol "EGCombatex". Incontrol responded by calling the guy "OGnotscouting". The guy then went to try nydus play, but incontrol scouted the spotting overlord before the nydus went down. The guy just gg'ed then lolol!

I'm always amazed how many people play in TL Open although prize pool is, well, pretty much non existent + considering the amount of the players taking part in it + format (bo1 to round of 6?). Even koreans play lately. Must be a really prestigious to win it. Gogo Poltimus!

Dunno, didn't see/hear if Endrey mentioned. Sounds about right though, was a very comfortable game in every area for Polt.

not in a million years, polt was already way ahead before and while he was cleaning up the drop, he also killed the other guy's entire army.

If you didn't watch Kawaii vs SlayerSdrugbird you missed the best game of the whole tournament just saying. 50 minute game with every base getting mined out?? wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
Let me also mention how excellent Kawaii's game was right there. He play picture perfect late-game against an extremely powerful and well positioned Z player, denying him the last mining base for the win. everything was mined out by the end.
EDIT: SlayerS_Frozen, who took out a code s zerg MvP_viOlet in the last GSTL finals, got taken out by a random zerg player. NICE! I never really liked that guy anyway, I was thinking that he was a below semi competent protoss and now he's not even in ro16.
This might come off a little odd, but I'm kind of glad the Koreans are showing up to the weekend tournaments in the foreign scene. It gives the non-Koreans a consistent chance to actually play against the Koreans and build up that experience. I think that's good.
I don't see why TT1 would let all his gates, robo and core die to the banshees if he does have blink. He can just keep them at bay and blink back when the seige hits to regenerate his shield damage.

TT1 didnt have blink, he researched only charge
Ah, my bad then, was only listening to commentary and alt-tabbing to see parts.
Nerchio with flawless broodlord positioning, have to say, I've rarely seen a zerg positioning the broodlords in a way that stalkers can't blink under them

Tournament scheduling conflicts. MKP vs Polt NASL, Polt got knocked out. MKP gets to move on to next series and Polt's consolation prize was to play in TLOpen. Check is also playing NASL.

true, quick blink to kill the banshee's that tryed to flee, and teching to storm, dumping all the overmins in zealots. Still incredible hold though from his first push! I thought you were screwed when I saw the 3gate and him teching to siege mode

I'm sure that lag may be affecting Polt to a certain degree, but he's certainly not showing his best play either. It almost seems as if he dramatically underestimated Lalush; those Infestors completely surprised him and consequently wrecked most of this marines.

mm, what I meant was he's got perfectly fine splits when he knows he's about to need to do it, but it's pretty clear that whenever he needs to react quickly it's just not happening for whatever reason ^^

They are casting off replays to prevent stream cheating, they'll update the brackets when the games actually have a chance to be cast by a proper casting team...
...not once they've been spoiled by people talking outside of tags about a players fp stream :/

I'm confused by Polt's control against Lalush. I would say without a doubt that Lalush is quite a bit less scary of an opponent than Polt is accustomed to playing against in the GSL setting, yet he loses 5 marines to 2 banes without moving them. Odd

He has been casting for like 4 hours though, so I think you can cut him some slack. I did see the attack on the minimap, and while I was surprised he didn't, he did catch most of the other stuff in other games. Too bad you attacked into that position, you still had quite the chance. Guys, when did caster-bashing become acceptable? Especially by players who benefited from the game being casted. Enjoy what you can, or PM Endrey with you constructive criticism.
I liked watching the game, and I thought the zoom-in was cute - useless - but cute. And the last ~6 hours of casting by Endrey were a great demonstration of dedication.

Nice post on TL. Different games were covered by different casters at the same time, the last one (probably Shadow's game) was casted by everyone since it was the remaining replay.

Wow, so many Koreans felled by NA or EU players. Great tournament, TL.
Polt will take this, no doubt. Guy has been on fire lately.
I don't know if Polt will win tbh, his play in the last couple of rounds has definitely started to look more and more as though he was struggling with tiredness.
imo the favourite will be the winner of this series, since Nerchio's very good vs T and Hwangsin has done these for 3 weeks now so he'll have been prepared for the long night.

ed: lol, guess it was too much to hope for a gg after losing to the 4gate =p
I think that not only does that sort of wall allow archons through, but also if the zerg goes for mass ling, you can rebuild the wall much easier (building another gateway to block, and leaving a smaller space for lings to get into your base.)
On July 03 2011 06:55 anonymitylol wrote: Nerchio seemed to respond really really slow to both of those strats.. might want to use your overlords better?
They see what they want to see. Nerchio was probably desperate to believe Hwangsin was going 3 gate expo.

I find it quite disgusting that people bash players that hard for "not gging" when they leave.
If you think it's easy to scout but i think it's just people's opinion that usually don't have experience in the game. You need overlords at key locations on the map so you can't send them all around his base at start of the game. First game there was no possibility to scout it because i would need to fly over his whole base which obviously is not easy to do if your opponent is not bronze. Second game i got in with overlord, saw 3 gate and thought it's normal sentry expand. If i turned down - i would see nothing so i would die even harder. What you want me to do? Throw a coin and decide which way to go? Besides that when i am not able to scout everything perfectly i need to prepare for so many things it's not even funny: -Blink stalkers -DT's(you need lair) but it can turn into 4gate archon for which lair is uselss -4 gate nexus cancel -VoidRays
On the other hand i have to admit it's not so easy because there is not many players in europe/US with who i could train and would do such strategies(i literally never approached 2 quick void rays from 1 base). Edit addition: Players outside korea don't hide their tech so easily so when you didn't play koreans a lot you don't know what to expect and scouting that is REALLY hard.

There is a lot more honour amongst foreigners and generally a gentleman's agreement to play straight up most of the time.
Koreans don't believe in any of this and do whatever they think is most likely to win.

When you watch Bomber, Nestea, MC etc.. you get so many 'how is he so good' moments. You never see that from Polt but he play to win and win he does.
He could've definitely at least forced a lift on the natural, I think he made some micro and strategic mistakes but that was definitely about the best timing he could've hoped for. (Also a few marauders may have helped, I don't think either player made a single one) edit : He reminds me a lot of Forgg, back when he took out pretty much every large name in BW through just timing attacks in that one msl.

I don't play Zerg, but I'm pretty certain that it is possible to have 2 overloads positioned around an enemy base. That was a crappy way to go out but I hope you can learn from it (not from me because I'm probably wrong)

Look at sheth, idra, they keep drone in base so long and keep scouting with lings-poke, overlords on gas...
I am just a noob gold zerg but i also struggle with those cheesy protos builds...
it is better to make instead of 6 drones 12 speedlings and be safe, hide them and kill those precious sentries on the way or maybe probe/pylon (when they have no stalkers yet).

That so-called honor is misguided. Those who think that there is virtue in avoiding one-base play are crippling themselves, by playing just part of the game and not the whole game. There is a difference between those who are learning to play and those at the top of the ladder. When learning to play, there is an advantage in making a tentative agreement not to all-in. The players who have already developed solid mechanics have no use for the agreement.

That was pretty embarrassing play from Polt. His execution was off, his micro was sloppy, his openings were relatively uninspired, he didn't play to the strengths of the maps, and his reaction times were sluggish. Hack was solid but by no means impressive; his opponent hung himself.

It's so awesome that the Koreans are participating, but it's a little depressing seeing foreigners fall so easily to them. 3/4 Koreans in the top 4 again? ^^

Maybe foreigners need to start practicing instead of whining or spending half their time casting.
HuK has done very well lately and Idra did well in the past because they both practiced in Korea like the Koreans. If the foreign pros actually set up to practice like that they can compete, in the meantime screwing around casting or generally not practicing makes them look like amateurs half the time.

The Koreans are smart to play in this tournament. There are not a lot of chances for Koreans to get exposure outside of Korea unless you are some big name that gets invited to the big tournaments.
This is a quick way for lesser known koreans to get their names out there. If you win enough of these, you might start getting invited to the bigger tournies with those free trips to the foreigner scene and the big money.

I hope people realize just how many awesome pro korean's there are. Hack wasn't even known and he all killed FXO and people just said how back FXO was for losing to an unknown. Its hard to be known in Korea because getting through the Code A qualifiers is so difficult. These unknown koreans are playing in a team house just like the known ones. They are scary good too.

So hes very gosu
I think his reputation is bit inflated by his result in the super tournament, his win against jinro/nada were because they were not used to his very fast muta in zvt, given time terran should have less problem facing Line.
To quote Trump: Why Pro-toss....whyyyyyy T.T lol I rofl everytime he says this
On my part Im glad most Ps dont go for archons that much....because even witht he bionic I usually use its hard as f*ck to deal with them thank god for EMP :D:D:D
If those vikings had been ghosts... Those archons just looked like colossi, frying all! I don't find they really bring something new to the matchup. Now terran have to decide to do vikings to counter colossi or ghosts to counter archons but it does not really change the gameplay of the matchup from a spectator view.
Third game was a bit like "oh i don't want to go 2base vs 2 base anymore".
Its understandable that MKP chose not to check in given that he just got done winning the champions trophy, qualifying for NASL and has to play the FXO IS for 2k in the morning. He probably just needed a rest, which is why polt probably played because hes not in the FXO tourny. Still would have liked to see him play

I believe that the winners of this group of TLOpens are to be invited for an invitational tourney not affiliated with the TSL4 at all. Not 100% sure though.

Those aren't cheese at all.
Definitely not cheese, but definitely not something you can learn from, unless you want to have a huge repertoire of Protoss all-ins.
But props to him for winning...again. Very impressive. Especially with all the Koreans that played this time.

I have the same question. Did these replays go missing somehow? They aren't available for download from the looks of it.
I think they dont release replays for the games where there are vods.
They have always released all replays from past TL Opens, including finals and semi-finals. Can someone who is actually involved in the releasing of these VODs/replays address this issue? Why have the replays from the semi-finals and finals not been released this time? Is there a new policy that involves not releasing those replays, or have they been lost, or have they just not been released by mistake?
EDIT: I looked through the folder with the quarter final replays. This folder actually contains the replays from the semi-finals; however, the replays from the finals are still not included. So, I guess the question now only applies to the replays from the finals (i.e. Hack vs. Hwangsin Bo5).

Aww man. All things VODs these days... just demolishing my broadband download limit. Downloading a 50-75 kb replay is so much easier on the download limit. Oh well, whatever. Thanks for the update though.
