He was able to macro enough to launch a failed attack on a Terran that had 2 Thors (a large proportion of his investment) out harassing.
He 'got raped after the drops stopped' because T hit him with everything in the front rather than defending while the hatch died, and the economic damage was already done.

He gave up two thors, four marines, a siege tank, and three medivacs for those two hatcheries. If I was on 3 bases as a zerg vs 2 base terran, I'd take that trade any day.

At the cost of over 1000 minerals and quite a bit of gas worth of units. The second drop alone was over 1000 minerals.

But the zerg relies on the 2nd hatch for production, which he barely got to do, and the 3rd only got fully operational near the end.
