You would likely be surprised how difficult gas management makes Sc2 for a beginner. Even when the player only has 1 unit to get upgrades for. Keep in mind that a big part of TheStaircase is to lower the barriers to entry into Sc2 playing. The first step should be as simple and easy as possible, while still giving the player options to win games at the very low levels. I achieved gold league will all 3 races without ever taking a gas, mousing with my non-dominant hand, on a completely foreign (to my hand) hotkey layout. I do not think I am very talented at playing Sc2, but by focusing on the most important things, I was able to accomplish this easily.

However, I noticed that in the custom game, in order to win against a zerg opponent, you need to clean up every creep tumor. I wonder if that's meant to be like this or if it's a bug. Thank you so much! Bug. I noticed that as well, and shouldn't be too difficult of a fix. Due to the holidays and everything, I am extremely limited on my time. I haven't had the chance to get any updates or fixes into the map lately. I hope this will clear up soon, but please be patient.

After working with Jak for the last month I've just published Step 0 of TheStaircase into my custom Daybreak map: Creep or Die! If you like spreading creep and want to try it out - search for creep or die in the Americas Arcade. If you enjoy working on Step 0 and want to try your hand at a little different style feel free to try my Creep or Die! game mode as well. I'll be publishing to EU and HotS after the holiday. I realize the SQ is supposed to do that in a "cognative manner", but I am a dumb fooker, at some point I need steps that say "Have X at Y then Z, like what FilterSC does ![]() I don't like those benchmarks because they rely on you doing a certain strategy to be accurate. They also are annoying to get every game. As it is now, our benchmarks will be able to all be captured by ggtracker and you'll have a meaningful performance report waiting for you after every game, no extra work necessary!

![]() What happend? I play SC 2 since the beta-days. Back then I was laddering a bit with random and got myself up to Platinum. At this point something changed. I felt lost because when I lost a game it was difficult for me to find my faults. So I decided to stick with Protoss and learn one strategy for each match-up. It kinda worked but everytime I had to multitask or micro my money skyrocketed and I always got supply blocked. So I stressed myself out and stopped laddering for over a year now. Some people call it ladder anxiety. For me it´s pressure. The source of this pressure are my expactations and my perfectionism. So I always had a excuse not to ladder, like "I´m stressed out by my work today", "I don´t know a good build (not up to date)." or I lied to myself like "Diablo III still is fun." ![]() I think since 2 months I use the core (before that I used darkgrid) and the staircase. Just messing around. Yesterday I decided that the time of excuses is over and with a little bit of help from JaK and the chat I started laddering with Protoss step 1. I lost my first game and got demoted into Silver. But it felt different because I met my goals. The Staircase really moved my focus away from my ego and the need of winning to achieving goals which are purely related to improving. The pressure is mostly gone. The only competition I felt was to meet my goals not to be better than my opponent. The situation, these benchmarks are in my controll. Only my abilities (mechanics) are the deciding factor not luck or mistakes of my opponent. LADDERING IS FUN!!! (with the staircase / for me / now ^^) Yes I did it. I´ve beaten the monster called ladder anxiety. So my experience is: Use the staircase and just start laddering and focus on your goals (SQ, supply block and so on) and then you know how much positive feelings you can get out of laddering and achieving your goals. So thanks JaK and everybody helping and supporting him.

![]() @PZ31k0nauT This is from "The Art of Learning" by Josh Waitzkin. Judging by our discussion yesterday, I think you would really enjoy the chapter this comes from. "In fact, some of the brightest kids prove to be the most vulnerable to becoming helpless, because they feel the need to live up to and maintain a perfectionist image that is easily and inevitably shattered." In other news, the video for Protoss Step 3 is done :D Keep the replays coming so we'll have the best examples of what we are trying to accomplish :D

I just played my first game on the ladder and all going very well as I overran my clearly lower league (just doing placements on HotS) terran opponent with mass lings (without even looking at them)... then he lifted all his buildings and flew them to the corners of the map :D Which left me a little perplexed given my inability to produce anything to track down flying structures. Having continued to macro for a few more minutes (and actually given myself a fail; without the ability to continue to sac lings my minerals started stacking up) I eventually GG'd merely as an exercise to attempt to divorce myself from the usual obsession with winning. I guess I could have given in and teched up to spire as the game was effectively over... but it just would have felt so wrong :D

When I get in those types of situations, I leave the game right away. That way I don't give myself a fail because I couldn't kill off my own units. Or, if I know I've already failed (hit max energy on my nexus or something like that) I just tech up and go kill em. Either way works excellently ![]() Also, we just released TheCore 0.6. Definitely go snag that download ![]()

Incidentally how are people finding using The Staircase in HotS? It feels a little imprecise for me given the lack of the proper SQ info.. for instance I'm going for Masters level benchmarks, so I'm supposed to be trying to hit 400 average unspent resources per base, but what should I use as my base count? I mean I can totally foresee being on 2/3 bases for the majority of the game but then expanding to 5/6 for the last few minutes. So what if I pass at 6 but fail at 3? I'm pretty sure people will just say to use my own judgement, which I guess I'll have to :D .. but it still feels a little ill defined (not that that's anyone's fault but Blizzard's). Another thing I wanted to ask is how I should know to disregard games in HotS given that I can't seem to see an average income figure on the score screen anywhere.. so I'm not sure if games are below 600/1000 to chalk off? Other than those couple things it's been quite enjoyable so far and it felt really hilarious to win a game while not having looked anywhere else on the map but my base :D
