I found the best way for me to learn the core was to set up a pre-defined command cycle and repeat it both in-game and out of game till I had the mechanics down. I call it the key kata:
ZERG MACRO KATA: + Show Spoiler +Action ( My actual key - yours could be diffrent ) Select Hatches ( Back Mouse Button ) Select Larvae ( 'O' ) Make Overlord ( 'K' ) Make Overlord ( 'K' ) Select Hatches ( Back Mouse Button ) Select Larvae ( 'O' ) Mass Drones ( 'Hold O' ) Select Queens ( Fwd Mouse Button ) Inject Larave ( 'O' ) Queue Commands ( 'Hold Shift' ) Go To Base 1 ( 'Ctrl + Shift + P ) Inject ( 'Left Mouse Click ) Go To Base 2 ( 'Ctrl + Shift + O ) Inject ( 'Left Mouse Click ) Go To Base 3 ( 'Ctrl + Shift + I ) Inject ( 'Left Mouse Click ) Go To Base 4 ( 'Ctrl + Shift + J ) Inject ( 'Left Mouse Click ) Go To Creep Camera ( 'H' ) Select ALL Tumors ( Ctrl + Left Mouse Click ) creep duplicate ( 'I' ) Queue Commands ( 'Hold Shift' ) tumor place ( 'Left Mouse Click ) tumor place ( 'Left Mouse Click ) tumor place ( 'Left Mouse Click ) Reset Creep Camera ( 'Shitf+H' )
Also started a thread about this as a practice technique ( http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=365997 )

Personally I don't like to depend on a setup to play that requires hardware modifications, as it basically dooms me if I don't have my stuff on me. Not to mention the fact that those keys are extremely useful outside of SC. For example WinKey+number switches between the programs in the Win7 taskbar. It's control groups for windows, beats alt-tab by a wide margin. It's a shame that particular detail is a hard requirement because as I said I really like the concepts and analysis behind TheCore. Just a quick question -- why would you be using the right windows key for the WinKey+number switching between programs? Wouldn't you have your right hand on the mouse and your left hand be doing all the switching between programs using the left windows key? It's my suspicion that you just don't want to damage your keyboard by popping out that sneaky windows key :p
My work involves a lot of typing (programming), so moving the hand to the mouse is avoided as much as possible. My right hand presses the right windows key while my left hand punches the number. The most used programs sit on the far left of the taskbar so usually the number is 1-5. I use the left winkey with the arrows to switch windows between monitors, maximize window. In fact as most useful winkey shortcuts are on the left side, my most used winkey is in fact the right one.
It's my suspicion that you thought I meant alt-tabbing to and from SC ;P
Regarding damaging the keyboard, it came with a tool to remove keys, but I would be concerned with medium or even short term damage if I had to pop them out daily.

Coool. That is pretty much the drill I set up for starting zerg players on TheLevels. (round 0) Definitely dig that technique for zerg. Creep spread and injects are so important.

Since marco's next action is on the keyboard, this loss of accuracy is acceptable, but can be a problem when microing in a battle.
That said, you don't HAVE to relearn it, the loss of accuracy is small. We're just optomizing for pro players.
JaK uses the keyboard only version, so he's not as familiar with it. First of all, I would like to thank all of you that are invovled in developing these sets of hotkey setups. It is greatly appreciated and I am trying the TRMM at the moment (mid master player btw). However, it somehow feels like having the production on the mouse is not the most optimal choice due to tapping issues. What I mean is that you often want to keep tabs at your macro, i.e. pressing the macro key ALOT (if one looks quickly at some of the pro replays, tapping is by far the most apm-heavy thing in SC2), but as mentioned in the quoted post, this affects accuracy somewhat. If it was only for producing, I would be fine, but as most of the apm goes to tapping, I feel like there must be a better choice for production, even in the TRMM setup (the tech on the mouse is a good choice though). A suggestion is to perhaps put a screen save there instead (for protoss it works really good in combination with a keyboard click for production building so that an instant warpin at a screen saved pylon can be done very easily) OR to have it as a harass hotkey (which of course doesn't change the current setup more than perhaps a relabeling and in the suggestion page). Having said this, I am sure that you had good reasons for putting the macro there, so I am curious to hear the motivation for putting the production on the mouse. Cheers and keep up the good work, ProxyPanda
Foxy can probably explain better than I, but I think the biggest thing about using mouse buttons for macro is that you should have a palm grip on your mouse. This makes a huge difference. With a palm grip you can put enough pressure on your mouse to press a side button without the mouse moving (give it a try). However, if you favor a claw or fingertip grip, I would explore different uses for the mouse buttons. Currently I'm using my back mouse button (the forward one is uncomfortable to press without changing my grip) for drag scroll. Its weird at first, but I'm liking it so far

Hey Jak, I have a few more questions.
I was looking at the 0.4 data, and for ZRM I see that hatches, queens, and all ups are on the same control group now. So does this mean the the sequence to inject is to push 'P', '/', 'O', then hold ctrl+shift, 'J', click, 'I', click, 'O', click ...?
Also, doe the "all ups" only refer to evo chambers, or are there other building that should be grouped with "all ups"?
How hard is it to switch between race layouts? I play zerg now. If I decided to go random later, would it be more beneficial to switch to the random layout, or stick with the zerg layout and play the other races on it?
Thanks again for the awesome layout!
|
@thieveshonor The queen control group is going to be layered, similar to the way the cameras are layered. I'll make a video explaining it when we release 0.4
zerg is very different from the random layout, if you're going to stick with zerg long term, it is set up so you can offrace.
HOTS beta is out! If anyone has a beta account that we could borrow, or an extra key, so we can make files for TheCore for HotS beta, it would be greatly appreciated. PM me please :D

whats your opinion on a main zerg player that offraces a lot in teamgames?
would you suggest switching the hotkey layout everytime before playing teamgames as terran or protoss or is it better to stay with the zerg layout for all?
|
Definitely stick with zerg layout for all. Much easier. However, if you wanna get crazy, technically, if you switch for each one, it's more efficient. Hard as fuck to go back and forth probably...
EDIT: Infinity Seven's Sanddbox is learning TheCore currently, but needs a version with homekeys on KOP[ instead of JIOP (ZRSM). This was always a part of our plan, but takes a lot to get from 16 layouts to 48. So I am prioritzing this particular layout for iSanddbox. The 0.4 update will include all 48 versions. But its going to take a while to get them out. I will be releasing them as I get them finished.

Well, technically he also made a layout for random.

Let me guess. Ctrl + shift + P will now select all your queens so that injecting will now be : ctrl+shift+P, then "O", then "I", then "J" (while still holding ctrl + shift) to inject all three hatches even more quickly? It's the one modification I made to 0.3.3.
I can't wait to see what you guys have cooked up for 0.4. TheCore is probably one of the biggest things I found that helped me jump from gold to diamond after being stuck for weeks.
Btw, do you change your own personal hotkeys with every new version you release of TheCore? It must be really difficult constantly changing keys around.
|
@Dark Seraph I actually have become used to changing my hotkeys. I've gone through every version of TheCore (including ones that were pre-beta) so I guess I've built up some skill in that area? 0_o

That's what the M stands for iirc. It's (Race)(Side)(Size)(Are there mouse buttons?)

makes sense I wonder how all the keys are going to fit into a smaller space? im comfortable with the layout now though

Hey Jak, just downloaded 1.4 and I am liking the changes =). Just what things should we assign to the new camera hotkeys as well as can you quickly explain the new layered injection method? Thanks, it would be great!
|
Okay, updated list of available versions:
ZRM 0.4 ZRMM 0.4 ZRS 0.4 ZRSM 0.4 PLM 0.4 PRM 0.4
I'll get to some terran things tomorrow. Had a really productive day for TheCore. After all 48 are done, I'm going to start making tutorial videos :D
Enjoy :D

testing the zerg small version now, can you tell me where the homekeys are / and the hotkeys for hatchery queen?
so everything shifted to the right in the small layout? I kinda like it, makes pressing shift + ctrl easier
are there any downsides compared to the M layout? Im thinking of switching
*edit2*
and how does the new inject method work?
|
I believe he briefly goes over it in this video within the first few minutes or so. Hopefully he's able to get the tutorial videos out soon. I'm going to give 0.4 a shot tonight.

I'll make the inject video for 0.4 tomorrow. Its the same layered inject, but smoothed out even more :D
