Yes, it's mainly changes for the thumb, the rest of the hand will be pretty much the same.

it is, but unfortunately, TheCore+ is going to take a while to come out since I'm the only one working on it Moving to LA and getting a job out there is going to take all of my time for a while.

Alright so, I've been back and forth on StarCraft for a while, but after trying to use my 1.0 keybinds in LotV a few months ago I realized there would be a lot of units and abilities that were unbound. When I tried to watch to 3.0, I noticed a LOT of keybinds had changed, and that I would have to essentially relearn ALL of them. At this point, I'm at an impasse. Is it recommended to just bit the bullet and upgrade to 3.0? Stick with 1.0 and modify the binds a bit ( This is the only non-standard layout I've ever really used for anything) ? Or pick one to sit on until some new version comes out?

I was in the same boat recently (except I switched to TheCore from Fleet Keys) and just said "screw it" while downloading TRS from Dropbox. The start was harsh but the more I play (even if it's just coop) the more natural the new layout becomes.

The most confusing thing is A LOT of unbound bindings and differences with the spreadsheet in the dropbox file. But still learning the new layout pays off in the long term perspective.

Yeah, it's nice to have everything saved in 1 spreadsheet but the layout takes some intense staring to read. Hopefully it'll pay off, right now I can't even manage to remember setting camera hotkeys lol

EDITED: Ok nevermind, I went back to page one and saw the known issues thing. Since most of the issues seem to be with ZRM, and ZRM is what I'm supposed to be using... I'm open to suggestions. Do I manually rebind the missing corrosive bile? Do I just take anything unbound and try to rebind it to what is listed on the spreadsheet? or do i just suck it up, practice what I can, and wait?

hey hey Fangoroth!

I would suggest filling in the missing binds on your own with the spreadsheet. Sorry this is taking so long, the scope of the script we've been making has gotten a lot bigger and is causing delays. In the long run it's going to save us a lot of work and allow us to be able to keep up with the much bigger influx of hotkeys (co-op, nova, etc). Thanks for being patient and taking the time to understand the spreadsheet.

Paladin, I know there are a lot of unbounds, but what's this about differences with the spreadsheet? Can you give me some specifics, are they all from a particular area?

Hi there is some stuff I do not understand and that you seem to take for granted is obvious (My english is not the best at understanding/comprehending sometimes)
1. I use ZLM but I am right handed so i should use ZRM, HOWEVER, ZRM are using binds on my keyboard that is very close to ''Enter'' key. Whereas ZLM is close to WASD.
2. Hotkeys are no the same at all, altho it's been 4 years so I guess changes are obvious.
3. Spreadsheet is messy but prolly bc im partially dumb when it comes to comprehending these things

Have this been answered? I dont wanna read 400 pages of comments Really..

1. You should be using ZRM. NOT ZLM. Thumb goes on shift.
2. The Hotkeys are very different, this is intentional.
3. What are you confused about?

So I've been using The Core 2.0 TRM for about 1 year. Why should I choose 3.0, what's the difference?

And also, all the time I play, I can't find a perfect posture for a left hand - after playing 1-2-3 games, it becomes really uncomfortable and I try to change the position of my keyboard, adjust my chair closer or far, change the tilt but it's the same story. I have tried suggestion to bring keyboard as close to mouse as possible with a tilt and so that hand has straight line - but in this case my pink-finger is not efficient- - it' hard to press J and H whis I use a lot (slow reaction time) - BUT better to press N and M than when my keyboard is in a "standart" position.

Lately a lot of people have been asking me how I learnt The Core. Keep in mind I still only suggest using TheCore to HARDCORE gamers who are willing to invest a lot into understanding, customising and drilling the setup. Otherwise it's not worthwhile. It's classic "investing in loss" that Neuro and Jak always talk about. Once you get the hang of it it's great, but there's a big downswing in-between that has to be taken in stride.

So basically I just drilled mechanics starting off with the hotkey trainer for an hour every day and my own personal thing I needed was finally learning how to touch-type properly as part of the learning process.

I then steadily added injecting practice and eventually doing basic builds and just had a big focus on slow execution and learning the MOTION and slowly speeding it up. Not rushing ahead and creating bad habits. Or at least recognising the bad habits and trying to eliminate them.

Here's my notes from before I stopped feeling I needed a specific regimen to continue learning the keys. At the top is the more recent regimen, and as you go lower the more basic one where I'm benchmarking hotkey usage stats etc. Links to all the custom maps are included:

+ Show Spoiler +
Current Issues/Focus/Concern

Using two of my army groups on my shitty ring finger
Needs to practice to see if is a long-term issue
If just 2 main army groups, Infestors on L
Need to grow the habit of selecting creep queens K, evos on 0
Hand is twisting a bit with shift-clicking
Slow it down and just get used to 9 the action properly
Falling into badhabits due to racing too far ahead. Focus on basics.

Focus:
Producing Ovies and units fluidly
Selecting queen hotkey to spread creep
A-moving army control groups naturally

Tier 2 Practice Session
30 minutes Creep Or Die battlenet://starcraft/map/1/191595
30 minutes ling-bane ctrl + shift training vs friend for longer if possible (alternate with other micro if confident)
1 hour custom maps - generic build
Focus on macro
Focus on hand position

Micro practice
micro drill casting fungal on mutas
micro drill casting blinding cloud on blinkstalkers blinkingunder your broods
Micro drill vs roach ball running past and fungal + blinding cloud practice on the targets
execute it incredibly slowly at first to the point where it’s boring you shitless
then gradually speed it up.
when you inevitably go too fast and make misclicks/mistakes or lose your spot on the keyboard, go back to the slow execution and refresh your memory.
spamming click to move casters into position THEN casting both spells

Micro vs the protoss army using all 4 control groups focusing on getting fluent at using vipers and infestors in quick succession

1 hour practice typing per day

Basic Practice Session 3+ hours

1 hour practice typing
1 hour - Hotkey trainer 4x15 minutes (later I found splitting this into 2x 30 minute sessions throughout the several hours would stop my brain from melting).
15 minutes on inject trainer
15 minutes on location hotkey trainer
15 minutes on creep or Die
4x10 minutes in Unit tester (10 minutes re-organising ling-bane)

ALL 6 locations!
Focus on thumb positioning with injects - try not to bend/twist it for ctrl + clicks, just hit the shift key with a striaght thumb, bend it downwards to hit just list, and smack it down harder, at a lower angle for both list and shift

54 energy just before next inject
Remember to play on Faster speed

Creep or Die - battlenet://starcraft/map/1/191595
don’t let our index press shift

Location Hotkey Trainer MOD
Need to practice evacuating IMMEDIATELY, not bothering about last 2-3 workers as if it’s a high Pressure game.
Hotkey 2 hydras as if they’re my army and zoom back to them whenever possible

textured key caps for the 4 home keys of TheCore are super helpful to have and pretty cheap from WASD

HOTS Unit Tester
re-organising lingbane
going in formation, executing attack with de-selects
Infestor + Vipers - que up commands and try to fungal vipers, every now and then try to dodge fungal/abduct the infestors
Muta micro
Pack of lings
mutas + overseers
mass widow mine
Control squads together, pulling back lings and engaging with mutas
Microing 4-squads at once

Make sure using middle finger for 0 and 9.
Use secondary upgrades on H and P rather than J and P.
experiment with upgrade hotkeys

Practice Micro tester extensively on current setup paying attention to ability to quickly use L-9-0 in unison in lategame army situations as well as general control for counters or separate micro sitatuations.

Potential change:
army hotkeys I L K 8
Creep queens will be on 0, [ for spread tumor

Terran Hotkeys

I = main army
O = 3rd army (drop)
L = 2nd army

8 = CCs
9 = rax
K = factory + starports

0 = upgrades
u = secondary upgrades/dumping hotkey

Protoss Hotkeys

I = main army
O = 3rd army (mothership core in most stages)
L = 2nd army

8 = Nexii
9 = gateways
K = Robo + SG

0 = upgrades
u = dumping hotkey

Zerg

I = main army
O = hatches
L = 2nd army
8 = 3rd army

Anyone else have a weird bug where you cant rebind control group 0 on ZRM? If i have the wrong units on 0, i cant get them off with the rebind (ctrl+shift+0), i have to like steal the ones i dont want out into a different control group, and then rebind that control group with the correct ones. Weirdest thing ever, I checked the hotkeys, and it all looks correct.

Ctrl+Shift+0 issues is on the FAQ and is a windows issue.

Don't switch to 3.0 if you have learned 2.0, it's better to make your own customizations at this point. Basically, its a much much higher time investment to benefit ratio.

As far as comfort is concerned, give it some time and stick to a position. A lot of the discomfort is going to be from learning new coordination (similar to doing a new exercise at the gym and being sore later).

2. Can you explain the rationale?

I'm using ZRM 3.0. I can reach all the buttons fine. I re-mapped them to be the same to make it a little easier for me to remember.

I tried doing a search, but it was difficult for me to specifically find the rational for the difference between Control Groups and Camera Groups.

In normal hotkeys you only need to press Ctrl + *number* in order to make a brand new control group, why do I need to press CTRL + SHIFT + *number* to make a new control group? It just seems strange to change that around?

Because it is very seldom that you would create a new control group, so it is slightly harder to do (though you are supposed to press CTRL + SHIFT with your thumb, so it isn't that hard). Most of the time you would just be adding units to your control group which is just CTRL.

Also, keep in mind that adding units to a non-existent control group also creates it. So you only really need to use "Create Control Group" if you completely messed up your control group and want to do it over.

WOW - what a project!!!!

I like to share my thought process I had many years ago - as I haven't found any people that wanted to help/discuss this me back then... on teamliquid. Asking how left hand players are playing....

I started by asking myself what is the natural position of my non-mouse hand fingers. (my right hand! left is shoving my mouse).

In my case my middle finger is longer than the rest of my fingers, so it stays on the I (i) and not k while my index is on J, ring on L and pinky right of L which shows ö on my layout. (US ";").

So the goal was to spread/arrange all functions and groups in a way so principles were fulfilled.

principle 1: no hand movement - palm of hand rests on the wrist rest all time.
principle 2: finger movement is as minimal as possible,
principle 3: if one finger reaches out all other fingers stay in position effortless!!
principle 4: if a function/group is used more often or decisive for the win/battle chaos- it moves closer to the rest position of the fingers
principle 5: index finger has more reliability than mr. pinky - thus more workload
principle 6: stay flexible in your thinking...

https://s32.postimg.org/ff7zrwomd/Unbenannt.jpg
On this image full color is a group while doted with color has a function.

My main groups are
J: (combat group) Ground fight units, Marines, Rauder, Medis,
I: (CCs and upgrades) Main, Natural, CCs, Ebays, techlabs,
L: (Building stuff) Raxes, Faxes, Sports
Ö (";") 2x SCVs for building Depots

H: tanks (N/M siege unsiege)
U: Vikings
Ä: caster (ghosts, ravens EMP/PDD on N, snipe/Hunter Missile M)

So I cycle through I,L,Ö -> which is the resting position of my middle (I), ring (L), pinky (Ö/";") super compfy.
Primary spell button is N. (stim, blink, siege, banshe cloak, build worker,)
Now this is something my build does not follow as strict as theCore that the same finger should not presse 2 different buttons in dangerous situations. Like select marines (j) and stim (n). My index is fine with this work. My other fingers could not do that consistently/reliable + I am using Topre switches with heavy Filco double shot caps so the downwards travel distance till actuation is low, easy and I do not have to bottom out and it is fine at least for bronze/silver with apm 70.

"Next subgroup" is bond on SPACE (thumb).
"attack is K"

So overall I use the left side of my keyboard and use my strong index for the core work and not limit it through position it on A or on S as there is nothing to press left of my index. But in the end everything is what someone is used to work with...

(I do not list all other functions here.... if there is interest I can upload my file...)
