For #1: use the "next subgroup" hotkey! It's bound by default to a side mouse button, but if your mouse doesn't have those, rebind it to something on the keyboard.

I am having a hard time integrating camera keys into my hotkey rotation, anything i can do specifically towards this? i didnt use it before so now it seems even harder considering i have to use 2 keys now.

Just made the switch to the core. Used to be platinum zerg player in WOL. Now I'm silver Toss. Liking the new hotkeys so far. I have 2 questions though:

1. In the FAQ, the suggested control groups are P for Nexus/Forge, O for Gate/Star/Robo. Why are there only two CGs for buildings and how am I supposed to build everything with these groups? For example, if I hit O, what if I want to build both an immortal and voidray, since they're bound to the same hotkey?

2. In the suggested control groups, ; is ranged units and 0 is labeled "stalker". Does this mean all stalkers? If so, why are they their own CG?

Thanks

In TheCore you want to focus on tab production, this frees up more control groups for army and harrass, scouting. Think CG for observers, phoenix, HT, Blink Stalkers, Mothership core.

I know at first this might seem totally unrealistic, but start with 1 control group and play games making just zealots with no gas against the AI. Then eventually start to add 1 unit at a time in your ai games and you will start to find it much easier to remember and use the different control groups.

Once you nail just Gateways alone in the production key, you can add a robo, or stargate. Then just work on warp ins, tab and queue up a Immortal, then back to army. Once you get the hang of this, add a stargate in and keep practicing your tab production.

It will take you a while, I have put in a good 20 hours so far and I am still only using gateway/robo so far vs AI. I still suck and I still mess up, buts I can see progress.

Good luck

I was just like you and all I can say is just find a camera location setup that just makes sense in your head, because having a understanding of why will help you remember where. Like for me 0 - = is my cameras for my 3 nexus bases. But 0 is where I keep them all on hotkey. So I can hit 0 then either 0 - = to get to any of my bases for quick chrono. This just makes sense to me. P is my hotkey for production and L ; is my 2 control groups for my main armies. This way in my head I know I have in 3 rows my army, production, bases. I bound my camera to warp in pylons right next to production so I can easily hit 2 keys back to back to select camera for pylon warp in, select gates to warp in.

All I can say is it just takes practice, you have to just make a resolve to do it and stick with it. It will eventually get easier and faster and faster. Good luck

Small note on Control Groups. Most WCS Premier players (especially the korean ones) use 7-9 CGs.
I'll have a more complete analysis in the future, but that is what I've learned so far

Also, I'm glad you're digging the layout :D

I feel like I should mention that I too am digging the layout! I think it's ingeniously done! Been using it since the very beginning, after many half assed attempts to customize my own. Only thing I dislike is that it'll probably become very popular, especially now that TLO and other pros are promoting it, meaning that the advantages I was looking forward to have in having a superior layout is going to diminish =/

Having different control groups for observers, blink stalkers, etc.. makes sense and that's totally intuitive. What do you mean by tabbed production, though? I don't even know what that is. Could you link me to a thread or something?

I guess what I'm really struggling with here is actually using/implementing the core. I have all of the setup down and I've memorized the hotkeys now. I just don't know how to use my setup optimally and put it into practice.

by "tabbed production" he means adding all your production buildings to one hotkey and switching between types (gateways, robos, stargates) using the tab key, or in the case of the core, the mouse buttons 3 and 4.

Tabbed production is pretty simple to explain. Get yourself into a game/unit tester with buildings and put muliple buildings on the same CG. Then select the CG and press the "next subgroup" button. This will change the command card from one building in the CG to the next, allowing you to access all of the options available for each unit/building type.

Hi, just wanted to say gratz to you guys for making TheCore. I have been transitioning recently and find it quite good.
I just went out the "i can never make it work" phase and start feeling the advantages TheCore provides.

Thx a lot to all of you guys making TheCore, you have set up a really nice lay out !

Fortunately I've got the whole story recorded

Alright, so I'm back after about two weeks of using thecore, aaaaand more questions.
1. Thanks for the video, it was almost exactly the history lesson I was looking for but one history question lead to another: you mentioned that you had written an essay regarding the reasons why you did certain things in the chameleon and why you disagreed about things done in darkgrid (which I've used before relearning thecore these past two weeks and I my apm drastically improved after about a week. I loved it- of course we're here to talk about thecore so I'll shush ). Do you still have the essay? I would like to read it in order to see what type of thoughts came from your side in order to learn at least some functionality of what thecore is trying to accomplish- and to learn a bit of background about ye old chameleon.
2. Any other essays you think I should read? I'd be more prominent to read those that discuss functionality, but list away if there are other "good essays."
3. Why does ZRM use both "o" and "i" for building basic buildings? In other words, what buildings would be better built with the secondary key "I"?
4. Do you have a discussion thread that answers questions like these or is it just "ask away" on here? It'd be a long shot to ask for someone to make such a thing, but do you or anyone else have any intention (if it is not made already) of making a list of questions and answers about thecore for commonly asked things?

If I had any other questions, I forgot them at the moment, and will get back to you later unless I find the answers elsewhere. But for now, to practice learning thecore some more

For #4: The OP has an FAQ if that helps. It may not cover everything you want to know about TheCore, but the OP overall is pretty extensive on information. As far as I know any questions have are best asked on this thread.

Okay So yesterday I read up on the core. I downloaded the ZRM for Us qwerty. . .And Firstly I used it and I was Like WTF! but after playing a few practise games and getting the hang of the new key bindings and getting my hand used to the layout I must admit I love it. . Everything is right there. . . as a Gold Scrub set on a goal to get masters before years end I play alot.
And I have to admit wow!!!! My apm has Doubled and I dont spam at all. I like how everything one needs is all there I must admit It weird to get into and I have beinf playing sc2 since it came out only game I ever play now a days.

still adjusting but the control groups are so simple roach hydra infester each unit has it oun group queens and hatch are right there and I love it best layout I have used and If TLO recommends it, then you Know it is worth the hill climb to learn

Not as confusing as you think it is as first

hi guestex

1. I never ended up writing it. I had a rough outline of what I wanted to write, and Foxy and I went over that as well as other things until we came to an agreement on what was most efficient, then we used that to make TheCore.

2. None that I know of. I always suggest Deliberate Practice - Ericsson as well as The Art of Learning for starcraft players (and people in general). But that has little to do with TheCore and more to do with getting better at starcraft.

3. This is so you can hold down one key and make spines/spores. You can thank TLO and Snute for that one

4. The OP has most of the basic info covered. We're working on compiling a tips and tricks type section as well. But this is the best place to ask questions (after reading the FAQ) :D

Why are there no longer buildings in the zerg suggested control groups?
What's the current best practice?

We took the buildings out as there were issues with putting buildings and units on the same CG. It works sometimes, but only in very specific situations. There isn't really a current best practice that we know of.

I just saw this keyboard and was curious what you guys think about this keyboard with The Core layout

I use the Razer Orbweaver with straight keys and I got to say its fantastic compared to using a keyboard.

What do you guys think about a keyboard like that with straight keys?

ergonomic keyboards and game pads will pretty much always be better than standard keyboards.

I'd love to see them make a mechanical keyboard with straight keys like the one above, maybe a little further spaced apart though.

2 Questions -

1) Is there a way to search this thread other than the search that searches every forum post on teamliquid? I'd like to make sure my question hasn't already been asked, but don't know how.

2) Any good solutions for casting fungal growth when you have burrowed infestors in a group with non-burrowed infestors? The specific case I'm worried about is when...
a) I'm in a battle, and burrow some infestors
b) some hotkeyed eggs hatch and now I have a hotkey group of burrowed and unburrowed infestors
c) I want to unburrow the infestors to cast a fungal, so I hit my control group and then unburrow. But hitting unburrow doesn't unburrow my infestors, it selects a fungal from one of the unburrowed infestors that's not anywhere near the battle.
My only solution so far is to cancel the fungal, cycle the subgroup, then hit unburrow, and hit fungal again. Is there a better solution than this or is there some reason this situation should not be happening to me?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

unfortunately this is an issue blizzard needs to fix, burrow does not work in the same way as siege tanks and vikings. For this, you will have to be more aware of when your units have burrow or unburrow available and switch subgroups earlier.
