@TCP What situation would it be useful to have a hotkey for worker rally? Wouldn't the zerg player either rally the egg with a click or click on a mineral patch/geyser?
@People of TheCore 0.8.1.1 is released and available for download on skydrive and github
This is a minuscule patch that is made up of a couple of human errors on my part while making the files. A couple of upgrades have been updated to make things more consistent, and a couple of unit abilities were incorrectly entered.
Enjoy

First post! Thanks for all the amazing effort guys.
I'm getting back into SC after more than a year (I didn't really play much before) and I just got out of bronze last night yay!
The first thing I always do with a new game is try to get my hotkeys sorted so I don't have to relearn them later. Having tried Darkgrid before I went there to check it out again and saw the link to TheCore. At first I wasn't too keen, having to place my hand on the right hand side of the keyboard with thumb on Crtl and Shift seemed weird and not for me. However I watched the videos and was sold. It's been a couple of weeks now and it's starting to feel a lot more natural.
I play Terran (TRM 0.8.1) and I've made quite a few tweaks of my own, using a few of the extra buttons on my mouse for Ctrl, Alt, Build Basic and Select Idle Worker. Last night I took Ctrl, Alt and Build Basic back off the mouse and to their defaults which actually feels better. Now I just have Idle Worker and Cancel on the mouse and I've reversed the Next/Previous subgroup on the mouse as the forward button is harder to reach so I don't really use it.
The only button I'm not really comfortable with is Build Basic on the ' key, it feels slightly too far away from the home keys for such a common action. I noticed on the left hand setup it's a lot closer. Also I'm sure you have your reasons but a few things aren't very intuitive and seem a bit inconsistent for very little efficiency gain for example I would have the e-bay and armory using the same key.
Now I just need to start learning to use more of the groups, at the moment I only really use ; for main army and [ for harass.
One thing I noticed is that the Terran spreadsheet on the OP doesn't quite match up with the in game hotkeys. For example in game the Medivac has K to unload whereas in the spreadsheet it says /. A lot of the units have different spell keys than the spreadsheet also. Which is correct? The spreadsheet or the hotkey file? I've tried the last few versions and they all have the Activate Pulsar Beam unbound. My keyboard is a fairly standard HP, maybe I'm using the wrong layout? I tried both US and UK qwerty.
That's enought rambling for now, I just want to say to be careful of using too much theory in the layout as it is not always practical in the real world you've done a fantastic job though!

I like to have a worker rally to the bases mineral line in case I forget or don't have time to rally the drone eggs to mins/geysers. It just seems that "F" is a bit unconvinient, however if it is there for a reason it's on that key, that's fine, just bit far to reach.
|
@MadKiwi Share the things! Armory and ebay on the same key sounds excellent. What other ideas to you have?
@lolwut if you right click on the minerals, it will automatically be a worker rally.

Dude you can just right click the mineral patch to set the worker rally, there is no reason to ever press the key for it. That's why it's on the other side of the board, because you aren't supposed to use it. There's many keys like that. In an ideal world they would just be left unbound, but then the game complains at you about unbound keys, so instead they're bound to useless keys.

I had a few more but then I saw you released 0.8.1.1 which made things a bit more consistent and makes more sense to me
Bear in mind I'm a noob and only been using TheCore for 2 of weeks but I have a couple of things I would change (although they may be that way for a reason I haven't thought of):
The Hellion, Widow Mine, Siege Tank, Thor and Viking all use I to transform/activate but the Hellion, Thor and Viking use K to change back whereas the Widow Mine and Siege Tank use ' to change back. I think using K for all of them to change back would make it more consistent. Also cloak is K and decloak is H which I guess is because the Ghost needs I for EMP. If it isn't necessary I don't really like using the same key (K) to activate for some units but deactivate for other units but maybe I'll get used to it. Perhaps cloak could be moved to ' and leave decloak on H.
Regarding upgrades I think I saw someone else mention that it gets rather confusing how the E-Bay has J for Infantry Weapons and I for Infantry Armor whereas the Armory has / for Vehicle Weapons and I for Vehicle/Ship Plating and J for Ship Weapons. In my mind I see Infantry -> Vehicles -> Ships so I think J should be for Vehicle Weapons and / for Ship Weapons as they are the odd one out.
The only other thing is the Build Basic which feels a bit far away but I can't really thing of anything better and I'm getting used to it now.
Apart from that it's pretty much as perfect as possible in my noobish opinion, it's starting to feel really good now after 50 or so games! I just wish my mind could keep up!

Maybe a mistake: On PRM the Camera Location 6 is back on 9 not 0 anymore.

I have two questions:
1. How do you effectively remove units out of two control groups? Like Marines for example, they're supposed to be on the main army plus an extra hotkey for bio stim.
2. Banelings have an extra hotkey, they are supposed to be on two hotkeys as well, right?
Additionally, I must change the Ctrl Shift 0 to something else. I disabled it in windows, but it keeps not working at all. This is a no-go when you are at a foreign computer and are not able to solve this issue. I got used to it as long as it did work but I really think this is a hotkey combination that causes a lot of people trouble and therefore should be changed in future versions of TheCore.

1. You have to remake each control group without the units you want out of the group.
You have to ctrl click your rines + 0, then you select your army without the rines and Ctrl+Shift it, this then created a new Group.
I do not know why there is not a button for automatically creating a CG while taking those units out of the old CG, but thats Blizzard.

I don't see why changing the hotkey for language swap is such an issue. It would be a huge sacrifice in speed if we didn't use this key combination.

See above. I see potential in TheCore, and the work put into it is immense. But it has to be independent from the computer you're using, else you will run into problems like these. It just slows you down way too much. I'll continue watching how TheCore develops, until it's fixed I'll need to use a slightly modified version of the Standard layout which does not have the issue (even if I managed to get it to work temporarily). These were just my (and Czarnodziej's) thoughts on it. If you choose to ignore the issue, it's totally okay. You will most likely have your reasons for it.
Oh, and thank you for the idea of using ALT for centering and setting the base cam at the same time. It makes adding a base much more fluently. I'm using ALT + 1-6 for base cams, the mouse side buttons for the free cam/creep spread/rally. So I already profited from TheCore. :D

On August 17 2013 09:31 JaKaTaK wrote: Select larva on A' I dig it, I think its a pretty big change that may be difficult for random players using the PTR version, but would lead to greater speed overall. What say you random and offrace zergs?
Would it actually be faster? It seems like select larva is always used after pressing the hatchery command group. Specifically, to morph larva into something, you don't just do "select larva" -> "morph to x", you do "select hatcheries" -> "select larva" -> "morph to x". This change would increase repetition for the first part of the sequence, for RRM, select hatch then larva is P->I, but would be P->', which are both done with the index finger and on different keys.
Even if you moved the hatcheries to a different command group, it seems that select larva being off of the homekeys would make things slower in general.

CALL TO ACTION Okay, so TheCore visualizer is out of date. I have no idea how to update it, but everything is on github:
https://github.com/cushman/thecorevisualizer
At minimum we need to be able to get everything up to date, but if any of you are super savy, perhaps you could help fix some bugs as well. I have tried for months to get in contact with adrian (the guy who created this) with no luck. How's about it, anyone up for the challenge?
EDIT: tiny update released today
Just a couple of fixes regarding upgrade consistency, we'll call it 0.8.1.2

Is it possible to get Idle Worker with rapidfire? It would be great for worker splits against Hellions, so I'm sure Zergies would appreciate it.

Thanks a lot for investing time and resources in improving the ergonomics and ease of playing SC2.
I play on a MacBook Pro so I can't use the right side keyboard for playing, also I want to have the ability of playing on any keyboard so I've chosen the Chameleon layout.
#1 I found myself pretty confused just to find the Chameleon SC2Hotkey file, there's no link to it from your presentation, I found it by entering your SkyDrive and then going up one level into the public folder, Chameleon is not into The Core folder.
#2 Is it updated? Do you work on improving the Chameleon too or you're focusing more on the other layouts? As some keys are missing and outdated for older patches, like there's no key for controlling the Oracle.
3# The Chameleon.2.0.1 file doesn't work, only the Chameleon.2.0 works
4# I find it hard to use the control groups since there's no documentation on how to set them and where they are.
5# Is the recommended control group usage of The Core valid for the Chameleon too?
6# Is the Chameleon layout valid for tournaments? I heard that most tournaments don't let you import your SC2Hotkey file, you have to manually set your layout, is this true?

This would only work if the 'rapid fire' were issuing right-click (move) commands. It actually issues left-click (use) commands. But this would be so good if it were indeed the former.
Nice thinking man, but yeah not quite workable.

Couldnt you put "select idle worker" on the rapid fire key and then hold it while spamming right clicks?

Rapidfire adds nothing.

Nice thinking man, but yeah not quite workable. actually, the hotkey "smart command" do the move command, but no, you cant set it on same key with select idle worker, I tried many ways , but no, best way seem to be holding select idle worker, while spamming right click
