@Daewon,

I'll explain the reasoning behind the keys a little later.

@Jak,

I think we ought to go back to buildings and units separate... Unfortunately.

Just a simple question, what exactly are free cameras and how should I use them while spreading creep?

@Daewon,

There are ten controls groups in TheCore. 8 of them work like this:

Ctrl+ shift + key: create cg
Ctrl + key: add to cg
Key: select cg

This is like standard, except ctrl replaces shift, and ctrl+shift replaces control.

The other two control groups work differently. I will describe them first, and then explain why it works. Ill be using ZRM in qwerty, so you will need to translate into whatever layout you use.

Control group 1: hatches
Select: P
Add to: alt J
Create: ctrl shift j

Control group 2: queens
Select: shift p
Add to: ctrl p
Create: ctrl shift p

The reason for this is because of larva injects. Ill explain the queen control group bindings first, because the logic for the hatch bindings follow from the queens. TheCore advocates a layered larva inject system, using a camera for each base to inject. In order to do this efficiently, shift needs to be held down (which shift ques the ability). By using shift and any key to recall the queen control group, we eliminate one action. More precisely, we don't gain an action by using an unmodified key, since shift needs to be used anyways in the sequence. So, that explains the queens (add to and select are like the other control groups).

Hatches: obviously we want select to be with the best unmodified key, so it is on P. we have add set to alt, because alt centres the camera, and is used for creating base cams. This means that every time we make a hatch, we press alt j and then the appropriate base key, either k l ; 9 or -. Incidentally, none of these are pressed with the pinky, so we never have a repetitive keystroke. This saves an action, because otherwise we wold need to press ctrl, and then alt.

I hope this makes sense, please let me know if I can elaborate on anything.

@ lolwut,

In theCore there are two kinds of cameras. 6 are bound with alt. these are what we call base cameras, because they are meant to be used on bases. Alt centres the current selection, so all these cameras are "centered".

The other 2 cams are bound with ctrl, and are "free" because they aren't centered. In order to spread creep:

Hold ctrl
Recall a free cam
Click tumor (ctrl click selects all tumours in the area)
Spread
Reset free cam
Repeat with the 2nd camera if necessary.

Hope this helps!

I noticed something for Terran:
Suggested Control Groups.

I use TRM. I check the data document for suggested use of Control Groups.
L is Ghosts and Academies.
. is Harass and Fusion Cores.

When I double-tap these keys, my camera will go to the buildings instead of the units.
It seems the code in SC2 has given Ghost Academies a higher priority than Ghosts, in regards to control groups and the camera. Adding other units like hellbats will cause the camera to zip to those units, not the academy. So the Academy is higher priority than the ghosts, but not other units.
As far as Fusion Cores, they seem to have a higher priority than any other units, except for battlecruisers. Using this control group with zip my camera to the buildings, not the units.

You can imagine how this is a problem when you want to use your control groups to bring your camera to your ghosts on L or your harass squad on period, and instead you get taken back to buildings inside you base. It does not seem to be a problem with the Armory, Engineering bay, or with Tech Labs. Only with the Ghost Academy and Fusion Core.

I am curious if anyone else is having this issue or just me. It seems like the solution temporarily is to not have Ghost Academys with Ghosts or Fusion cores with any other units in the same control group.

Good point, i actually noticed but didn't bother and moved them to P.
As for how much of a pain the priority system is: Try to mass lift raxes and factories and reland them if one happened to be producing

Concerning TheCore being used without lateral mouse buttons:

Yeah the funny part is that once you take - (/) out and set it to browse like in older versions of the core, you will have 38 keys unbound with units and buildings affected. You know how much of a pain in the ass it is to be remapping with the SC2 interface.

The question is: what is the practical thing to do? replace - with I like the older versions of the core? Ok more hotkeys unbound more work... etc etc.. at that time you realize you have to go back to the older version of the core or use the goddamn sidebuttons.

German Key user over here, so enter is not that accesible.

Slashie, I think you're mixing up \ and /

\ Is the "interchangeable" one. / is used for a bunch of stuff.

Edit: eh, since you're a german key user, I actually have no idea what the equivalent of "\" is for you. For me, using U.S. QWERTY, it is right above my Enter key.

What was the rationale behind moving stim from i to / in RRM? Marines don't have any other ability, and i is easier to press than / right?

Edit - nm, figured it out... Stim in bunker.... Derp!

And Medivac unload.

It makes logical sense that Medivac boost would be on the same key as Stim, but unload is still the most-used Medivac hotkey, so boost took Slash.

I really like the new change in adding and creating layered cameras and control groups for the main bases in the new 7.1 setup. It's much easier to remember to both add and create the control group when adding new hatcheries. Using one less key and not having to move the thumb is incredibly important while attacking and expanding at the same time as zerg.

For some strange reason, CTRL-SHIFT-0 does nothing on my Steelseries 6Gv2. Very strange, the setting of all other control groups works normally. It's like the 0 key stops working in this specific scenario. Anybody else have this issue?

Jaybroni, you have to keep in mind that for people who come into the thread asking this, it's the first and last time they'll deal with this question, but for those of us who visit the thread frequently, we hear about this easily answered issue at a nauseating frequency. Please do excuse us, then, if you find our patience to wear thin.

And one last thing to remember is that it is ultimately the user's responsibility to check resources like the FAQ if one has questions. Ideally we would all keep a positive attitude, but there's no need to take jabs at others (especially someone like sixtus ).

Is someone here who plays Dota2 or LoL with a TheCore Style Hotkey Setup (D3 and WoW would also be interesting)? Could you please post or send me your Setup?

Here's a copy of my input.ini in Google Docs.

Somethings are a little strange just because I'm a little strange, and this evolved over time. I'd love to hear some of the other ideas for keys, as I love efficiency! I'll type out the main ideas that most "TheCore" style LoL hotkeys will use, then I'll give you some nifty tricks that are (obviously) much easier to execute!

The main ideas are:
+ Show Spoiler +

  • UIOP are the basic "QWER." A side note here, I know some people like to have their fingers resting on "qwe" and then strike the ulti with pointer in order to avoid fat fingering, you can easily move the hotkeys to IOP[ if you like that style. Also, If you rebind attack move away from J and onto the mouse, your finger rest on UIOP, and you have access to all your abilies, plus attack move from your basic position!
  • J is attack-move. Your fingers rest on TheCore's pantented JIOP. while thumb hits the modifiers Alt, Ctrl, Shift, and /. Again, left mouse click can also be used instead of J for attack move. This is a huge advantage because you can have access to all four spells from home row. Here's a video on the advantages of this method. If there is any interest then I can post my hotkeys for this as well, because there are some odd nuances, but they can be overcome.
  • Holding / always you to only target champions. ~ is an underused and incredibly powerful button. By holding ~ you can only target champions, and not minions, with spells. Howerever, comboing it with your spell roation is difficult because it is poorly placed. / is natural, and allows you to hit all four spells while your thumb handles the dirty work.

Advantages:
  • Champion attack only is in a useful location, your thumb instead of your pinky.
  • Self casting is easily hit by your main modifier. I like shift as my main modifier. As a Kayle main it is huge to hit that clutch ulti's and heals on yourself, so I wanted to largest button, Shift, to be my main modifier. This idea continues on the next point.
  • Cast all abilities with both smart and regular cast. It has been said that once you learn how to smartcast you never go back, but some pros use regular cast because they prefer accuracy over speed. So, it is good to be able to use both styles in the right situation. You can use the secondary modifier of the thumb, Ctrl, to regular cast your spells. An important note, if you play a heavy skillshot based champion pool and like having access to regular cast frequently, then you can swap Shift and Ctrl and will not change to layout at all, I'd argue that most people may prefer it the other way!
  • The "select ally 1-4" are accessible and useful, allowing you to never miss a clutch heal on your adc because your Cho'gath body blocked you. Two lesser known tips to targeting ally's in team fights: The first is that you can click to normal cast a spell, and then manually click on the ally's portrait and the right hand side of the HUD to cast it on them. I think this is fairly gimmicky, but can work. The other is that you can click to normal cast a spell, and then hit the "Select Ally 1-4" command to automatically use it on them. For example, in teamfights Soraka can combo "Ctrl+I" to normal cast her Heal, then she can continue holding Ctrl and hit "Ctrl+J" to automatically target her ad carry for a heal.

I'm sure someone could really go ham with this and work all 6 pings, laughs, taunts, dances, scorescreen, and maybe even arrow keys into this. There may even be combos that I'm missing that can be far easier to use if the layout was further optimized. But I think this is a rough starting point that can satisfy some people.

- - -

(Also, ty Jak for all your hard work on TheCore, I adopted it less then a month after this topic started, and checking for the updates has become somewhat of a weekly morning news tradition for me. Thank you and the whole team for all the hard work you guys have done, and congratulations on being so close to the official launch!)

Thanks Verde! I'm going to implement some of your ideas, cool stuff

one quick think for LoL bindings for TheCore:

evtUseItem7 is actually "teleport home" more commonly referred to as "b"

(in case you're interested in rebinding it)

This deserves its own post.

HOLY FUCKING SHIT! Left click as attack move is amazing. Can we do this in Sc2?!

EDIT, we'll have to solve a minimap issue. It makes it so you can't click on the minimap. We should be able to find a workaround.

But what if you have marines selected and then left click an SCV? I am confused.
