Have you really tried to conserve ultras? I'm asking this because this is not a new idea. It's really old.
The thing is: Ultras are there to take the damage, while the high dps/cost units (banelings, zerglings, infestors) do the damage. You want/need them to go in at the front, and then it becomes nearly impossible to pull supersized injured ultras back through waves of melee units
If you don't want to lose such gasexpensive units, it is simply better to go for Broodlords if you have the choice. Ultras are there to get killed.
The images I upload to the OP were from some replay with Ultras on SC2Rep where I figured the same thing would be done as always.Ultras are there to tank damage, I agree with this. They are in there to tank the first few rounds from the Terran army so ling/bling/infestor can wreck the rest, it just seems careless to send in an injured Ultra to die instantaneously.
I am not interested in whether you should go Broodlord or Ultra, but the best way to utilize Ultras as a tech choice. Again during Violet's games on Shakuras he had 2 to 3 Ultras in the deep red and sent them to attack the terran natural. They died quickly and Violet's attack was repelled.Perhaps microing Ultras that have become weak once an engagement has begun is a little difficult and unnecessary, but sending injured Ultras in to break a siege line or even a MMM ball seems like it would never be a good idea.

Yeah, I under use transfuse myself ever since beta when Queens move so slow off creep. Transfuse is also great for Broodlords. Something I need to use more, especially late game where you don't need as many queens anyway cause of macro hatches ^_^
I think a Nydus network behind your army either to transport your queens through for transfuse, our as a way to send your Ultras back home could make this even cleaner.
