I just played a ladder game that has me a little stumped. I made a few mistakes (mostly with my few pylons powering things) but I feel that if the zerg had played better he'd have beat me anyway.

Is it appropriate to defend a proxy hatch with cannons? Should I rush for a tech? Put down more gateways? I actually have no idea what to do here.

This was a Masters game.

Yes, once you scout the hatch you can always just put up a pylon and two/three cannons, and continue to macro. Remember to cover as much area as possible with the cannons though

Never build more then two cannons tho, if you build three cannons, that 450 in cannons, plus a pylon you might not have needed at that time, so even if his hatch does nothing he still gained from it.
When life gives you lemons, say fuck the lemons and bail.

When someone is proxy hatching me after i FFE i chrono 1 zeal and make a pylon and a single cannon neat the proxy hatch, i think 2+ cannons is just a waste, 1 zeal and 1 cannon can kill the hatch fast enough for it to make max 2 larva, i think ^_^.

yup single cannon, zealot and then stalkers will do fine. There is no rush to kill the hatch, if they make 1 or 2 roaches it's really no problem when you have some units out. Killing it before the first batch of larvae from injecting finishes is important.

If the zerg went early pool (like 12) and then rushed roach tech while proxying a hatch like not in your main or your natty but (T)ReaL close to your ramp but still out of the (T)Way...would the decreased reinforcement time of the roaches coming from that hatch for an allin (using ovies to spot the high ground wall) be worth exploring?i figure get 4 lings out asap from main and aggressively deny probe scouting the warren and have em kill the pylon at your natty if its there to pump fake the toss into thinking your doing like a 11 18. I normally do either a macro fast three base or roach ling allin off 2 base. About 12 roaches and 20-30ish lungs around 730 attack his natty and it almost always works as long as my ovie spotter doesn't die. Roaches snipe the forge or gateway wall off then with the ramp opened up and toss flustered i zip the lungs into his main. Most of the time he dodesnt ff fast enough and 70% of em make it in. Then you just tax his multi tasking with his main being sacked and roaches and constant reinforcement lings pressure that natty ramp...either his attention will bounce to the main to try and deal with the hold position lungs and i get a free pass up, or he stays super vigilant with sentries and ffs keeping me down .....but can't do it forever especially since by now I've sniped the forge and gateway and pylon at ramp so it take a bunch to keep me out. Anyyyyway, any of you low diamond guys out there think that a much earlier push (like at least 3 minutes earlier i would imagine) with only like 8ish roaches and maybe 12-16 lings coming from that proxy hatch right by his natty could catch some tosses off guard? Im just thinking that they're probe used to either guber macro 3 base responses or allin 1 base stuff. But since the roaches would spawn like RIGHT at the ramp almost, I would think there would be a timing window.

You should keep an eye on the scout drone to make sure it doesn't disappear! As soon as you see the hatchery place a pylon as close as possible to where his larvae will appear. Once the pylon is done, immediately place 1x cannon (again, as close as possible to where his larvae will appear). Time a second cannon so that it will finish just AFTER the hatchery will, so if he cancels the hatchery you can cancel the cannon. I believe it MAY even be possible to wall in a zerg's larvae with proper building placement, but I have not confirmed this.

Fully wall yourself in at the front, and bring your first zealot to help attack the hatchery. Chronoboost probes! Remember to keep teching as you would normally. If the hatchery finishes, pull 5-6 probes (timed for when the egg will hatch) so that you can instantly surround and trap roaches in range of the cannon(s).

EDIT: I watched the game to see if I could give more detailed advice in case this wasn't a typical proxy, which is good because it wasn't! When you saw he was proxying multiple hatcheries (investing more into the attack) you to need to invest more on defense. He has stopped EVERYTHING at home so he can afford the hatches and roaches, so you need to be prepared to spend a good amount of money yourself.

He had two hatches in your base yet only placed two cannons! Four cannons would have been more reasonable - even 5 would have been fine. You also allow the roaches to flee from the cannons! Just like a single hatch proxy, you want to pull some probes to surround roach eggs and trap them in range of the cannons prevents their numbers growing too high. Don't focus the eggs with the cannons, just let them do whatever they want (unless, as in this case, you want to focus ONE hatch down before the other). Because he is investing so much into the attack, it's fine to swap your chronoboosts from your probes to your gateways - but remember to keep making probes!
