Medivac : Units Ratio?

Erm, i kinda new of a player and when i go for terran i like to go bio. However, i get the problem that sometimes i do not have enough energy to heal for my medivac sometimes i have too many medivacs, any suggestion on optimum number?

If I recall correctly MKP stated that 12is the max amount of Medivacs you should produce

It was after one of his wins in the gsl (post interview).

My logical side of my brain tells me 1 medivac for 8 marines or 4 marauders because thats how much fits in a medivac but I've been wrong before.

Probably depends on the unit you are versing, against zergling you probably want more medivacs and against immortals, ultralisks and siege tanks probably more units.

Yeah, he said make 10-12 medivacs, then make sure you have more units than medivacs.

Probably meant it partially as a joke

It depends alot on what your enemy is doing though. If you play tvz , and zerg is going for ling/infestor for fungals, you want more medivacs than usual, as this pretty much counters fungal without banelings (which zerg is then forced to build too).

it kinda depends on your army control and your opponents army comp.

Against mass melee units, you will want more medivacs as you take damage on a lot of units simultaneously also if they get a surround you cant micro units away.

Against ranged you will want more units to get the bigger concave and if your enemy is doing things right they will focus down units more, which means you are taking damage on less units at once and medivacs can't keep up with units that are being focused. In that situation you just want to kill your enemy faster than they kill you. You can also micro hurt units back much easier.

If you are just 1a'ing then you will want quite a few medivacs if you have a heavy bio army and not too many if you have a mech based army.

I think in all honesty, its one of those things you just eventually get a feel for. I don't think about it too much when playing, i'm usually thinking more about my army comp vs my enemies comp than if i have enough medivacs. If I look at my army and the thing that is lacking is medivacs, i make a few, unless its against toss and they have lots of collosus then i forget medivacs until i have enough vikings.

I suppose for a 200/200 army a good rule of thumb would be no less than 4, no more than 10. However I have had many times where i have a 200/200 army with no medivacs because I don't feel like I will need them.

That's especially funny considering he gets baneling'd down to about 2 marines every 30 seconds or so regardless of medivac count.

If you are expecting to drop all your army at once, yeah. But besides this situation, 1 medivac per 8 marines or 4 marauders is kind of overkill.

Your problem might not be number of medivacs but under/overstimming. Many pro's say the more medivacs the merrier. Although they are not MKP. I think it's a stylistic choice.

Medivacs are for pussy's, real Terrans play Marine Only! Abuse your imba stuff, dude!!

On the other hand; depends on how much your rely on your Bio and stim. If you use Marines just to lure the enemy into Tank range, you will need less medivacs than when you go forr a huge Bioball.
I think about 5-ish when you won't Stim much, 10-12 is max for a bioball, imo!
Zerg lategame is imbalanced as shit. Also: "Protoss is really strong recently. Perhaps, it's time for there to be some changes for Terran." -MMA. Even MMA asks for buffs. Srsly Blizzard. Srsly.

just eyeball it. If you notice that your medivacs aren't getting the job done (healing up all your units to full health without running out of energy) then you need more. If you REALLY need a rule, getting a good 6-7 units:1 medivac ratio is ok, in case you start panicking and try to spam out 20 medivacs.

Depends if you want to heal in battle or out of battle. I get 1/2 with the energy upgrade in TvZ because banelings tend to kill everything before they can actually heal..
