i did a search but didn't seem to find anything but was wondering if anyone knew how to pull off successfull pheonix play against Terran. i have seen a game or 2 and tried to copy it but haven't had much luck yet. does anyone know the what the good timings are for it? i usually get my 2nd gas at about 20 and move out with my first 2 phoenix and try to take out mules and scv's especially ones that are building things. it seems like it is to much of an weird transition to go for collosi and i can't seem to get enough templar with storms out in time- i know that i don't have a replay mostly cause i don't save them (i know i should) and haven't played Terran in like 20 games now or something like that. i guess really i am just wanting to know what the basic ideas of the strategy are and how to utilize the units well

You can't go blindly to Phoenix v. Terran. If T is teching or fast-expanding, then Phoenix harrasment can be great. But obviously it's not viable against a T massing marines/marauders for a timing attack. Scouting is the key as usual.

also i should is if you go for a starport opening is it basically a waste to go for phoenix and should i just skip to void rays?

Certainly not. A starport opening usually means banshees, and nothing counters banshees harder than phoenixes. Just make sure to get some kind of detection up and you'll be fine.

sorry i think i worded that wrong, what i was meaning is if you scout your opponent say on lost temple close air positions and he is not going for a 3 or 4 rax etc so i want to try starport play when do you go voids vs. pheonix

A lot of it is personal preference - both have great harassment potential. One technique that works excellently against a terran with a wall (and sometimes without one) is to simply push their front with a small gateway army and one or two void rays. The void rays can hit building without getting hit by marines, and nothing can run down the ramp as long as you have sentries, so you can pick off some free building and units.

Assuming you don't want to go for that and just want the best composition, I'd say that in general phoenixes will do better against heavy starport play and void rays better against heavy factory.

Scouting is key, if he is fast-expanding i would say phoenix unles he's very marine-heavy, if there is a starport phoenix can be good. A 1 base terran won't need so many marines to keep phoenix from being cost-efficient; void rays put out greater firepower against ground at smaller numbers while phoenix can abuse their mobility.

Try it on scrap station man. Build a quick stargate near the edge of your base to hide from scan and harrass terran mineral line. This stops banshee rush pretty good. With phoenix speed you can scout terran base really well. And you are less susceptable to mm timing push due to the distance/rocks between the bases. After that get colossi and just macro up.
