MotM June 2014 winners have been chosen! For the first time, tried a process without any judges involved! Here's what we did this month: Members of the Map Cave (skype group with 50+ members, PM me if you want in) have each picked their 3 favorite maps from this month. The maps with the most backers were then used for the public poll, which everyone could vote on. I think that worked very well this month and we will be repeating the process for MotM July, with some minor improvements!
Anyway, here are the results of that process!
1st Place was claimed by Uvantak with his map KTV Chaac Marshes, with 25% of all votes! He will receive 60$!
2nd Place goes to -NegativeZero- and his map AEM World of Sleepers, which got 19% of all votes! He will receive 30$.
3rd Place goes to Red Rock Ridge by lefix, which got 16% of all votes. He will receive 20$!
4th Place went to Epimetheus by Namrufus, which was only 1 vote short of being tied for third place. + Show Spoiler +
5th Place went to AEM Mutiny by Timetwister22, which actually was the favorite map of the map cave, along with AEM World of Sleepers. Also, only 2 votes short of being tied for third place. + Show Spoiler +
6th Place went to AEM Demon's Claw by NewSunshine, which was also not too far behind. Less than a handful votes seperated 3rd and 6th place! + Show Spoiler +
This month's Special Award goes to Disaster Area, another map by Namrufus. He will receive 15$ for his creative and also very polished map, which we would love to see some games on! Keep up to good work!
With that said, All map posted after the 25th of June on will be considered for MotM July 2014!
All you need to do is to create a map thread following the forum guidelines (please include a top down overview) AND publish the map on battle.net.
Please feel free to share your submissions in this thread! It's a nice way to give your maps some more exposure, and supports the winning maps by keeping this thread up a little longer. I will not make an extra thread for July submissions!
Once again we are taking donations! Like last month, 50% of the donations will be used for the competition prize pool. The other 50% will be saved up to fund upcoming MotM events. So far, there are 110$ in the MotM event funds!
If you also want to support MotM, send your donations towards
sc2motm[at]gmail.com
via paypal.
Donations for this month so far: lefix: 20$ Plexa: 20$ Namrufus: 15$ LoveTool: 40$ -NegativeZero-: 30$
Okay, that was really unexpected, i was waiting for Mutiny or World Of Sleepers to win b/c they have some pretty damn interesting ideas. It's not like i'm mad or anything.... just unexpected.
None the less i'm always glad plp like my maps, but every time i see my own maps i can't avoid seeing their flaws and such, to me they look pretty ugly sometimes, i suppose everyone who has every done a drawing or anything related to art or design has felt this way about his own things.
Keep in mind you'd want to have some synergy between those maps. So I wouldn't neccesarily pick all 1st placed maps as a map pool, if other maps possibly compliment each other better. Feel free to theorycraft further
I also think Demon's claw would have done much better if it was a different texture set. Has there ever been a "good" lava texture map yet? As much as people say they vote for the "better" map, let's be honest here, a lot of people vote for the best looking map.

Sadly. I really should give up on dark tilesets, they seem to be the best way to make a map lose.

Maybe the reason it placed so low could also have been just because it's "too standard"? (not that there's anything wrong with that of course, I love well-made standard maps like that one, but just the majority's preference)
Indeed, there's a flash factor my map is missing, Mutiny is an excellent foil to it in this regard. I've started moving into deeper map dynamics though, stuff that changes how you approach the map in a fundamental way, only problem is it doesn't have gold minerals or rocks placed in odd ways. What I'm doing is more in the vein of Cloud Kingdom. And the tileset was never gonna help. Oh well.
Out of all maps ever posted? More like one out of 100. There are alot of maps that are kind of wild and experimental, innovative if you want. But usually they don't feel very smooth and polished. That's something I rarely see, but that's just my opinion
