So I have been thinking about streaming my mapping for some time. I originally got the idea when Ironman was streaming on ESV and was asking the viewers for advice. We could push this further by just having someone pick a community-made concept and then execute the ideas of the viewers on stream. This would actually be more interesting for people who are not very much into mapping but would still like to see their ideas realized than for mappers.

If I get enough positive reactions in this thread I will try it. Just post your ideas visualized with Paint, GIMP or something like that.

What exactly do you mean? will you stream your work and people commenting how you could improve the layout and the aesthetics? Will you take the layout other people suggested and make it into a map while people watch you? Or will you go into the map without any knowledge of what it will look like and just take random ideas from the viewers and implant them in the map until it comes out as a whole map? Or maybe will you just make a map while taking questions about it from the audience?

I think the common man will get turned off pretty quickly at how slowly the map actually comes together. I can sit and watch someone play SC2 for 1-2 hours, or if it's a tournament with good casters/good games, then longer. But I don't think I"d find it fun to watch a mapper for more than 20 minutes, and I like to mess around in map editor myself.

I wish you good luck though, it's a good idea overall, I just think you'll have a difficult time executing.
P.S. I'm nub. If you'd like you can follow me @xthurst but its not worth it ill be honest

I will not take my layout. I want people to post their layouts in this thread so I can make a poll which map I (we) should work on. Yes, I will pretty much take random ideas without any planning done by myself.

Just watching someone do mapping is indeed boring. If you can be part of the creation I think it could be more interesting. Ironman for example got a ridicolous amout of viewers a few weeks ago.
Already experienced mapmakers will obviously rather make their own maps.

I would love this. I can never find a stream where someone is making a map.. maybe we could have a commmunity stream that would always be map making?

I think it would be really cool, I would enjoy just hanging out and learning a few tips and tricks here and there, interacting with the viewers and taking suggestions would just make it even more delightful.

There are people who enjoy map making. I've seen it every time I streamed. The thing is that you need to do it on a featured stream of some sort. On ESVTV I would get around 40-80 average, sometimes exceeding 100 viewers. Before I went to ESV, I streamed mapmaking on my private stream and had 3-7 viewers average, with 12 at the most. So that's something you have to consider.

If you were planning on doing this on a private stream, don't think for one moment that you will get any more attention than I did on my private stream.

Also, the only reason I got 1800 viewers was because the map stream was featured on the front page of twitch because there weren't any other tournaments going on I guess. I don't know, but I basically tripped out and almost fell out of my chair.

I did read your tweets about it. :D

I really don´t expect more than a few viewers. But I imagine even with 100 viewers the mapping would result in total chaos. The viewers should be part of the action.

But so far nobody has postet any ideas so maybe I won´t stream at all.

lol believe me when I say this... I've tried to gather ideas from the community way back when. I tried doing it in day9 style, asking for PMs with ideas, concepts, drawings, etc... never got a single one. You might get lucky though =)

Totally agree. Can't believe anyone rly wants to watch mapmaking. Even with people like Superouman who is a brilliant and innovative mapmaker and make aesthetics very quickly, it's just a long and boring process to make a map and also it's not linear cos you constantly scrap layouts that suck and so on.

-- If I had known you were looking for ideas I would have shot you one! Heck, I loved coming home on my lunch breaks to watch you map for 20-30 minutes so I could learn stuff.

-- It's good if you can work with some other mapmakers while streaming. It helps process ideas if you're execution is a little on the sloppy side (i.e. mine a lot). Depends on the audience you are shooting for. But Ragoo is right -- it can be very boring if you're uninterested. It's more or a less an industry specific type of thing (like say training videos for 3D modeling/render work, etc. . .).

Can you link the stream and tell when will you stream? anyways I am making my idea right now

EDIT: I actually wanted to do this myself but I am bad with the editor and I can't make good looking maps, so here it is:

yellow - low ground
teal - cliff level 1
green - cliff level 2
red - cliff level 3
E - expo
M - main
|= - ramp

The idea is only a general and I am not sure if there should be XN towers, and if there should be rocks by the sides paths? that would make sieging the natural much harder which is good but I donnu. Anyways I would love to see this concept made into a map

the watchtower is too important and too easy to control, you should fix this by blocking it with rocks in the early game

Yeah I love DO, well I love the concept of short air distance and long ground distance, dunno why but I just like it But it is not based at all on DO and the only similarities is the mains location and maybe the 3 paths.

First of all I personally think making 4p maps with blocked spawns is pretty lame. Especially these 4p mirrored maps that are all more or less the same easy 5 base shit.

In this map I think the third is too hard and those very middle bases seem like winner bases considering all the ground you have to cover to hold them.

My biggest problem however with this is the insane amount of wasted space on the outside!

all good points well made. As no one was posting any I figured I would post a layout and since it was a community map we could work out the bumps together.

Rotate the map by 45 degrees and tell me the difference to the "use of space" on Ohana. Following your logic all maps would have to be squares.

Today I won´t have time but I will stream tomorrow at 6:00 CEST and try to make one of the posted concepts work.

Note that while OxyGenesis concept looks prettier it does not necessarily mean the product will be better. So vote for the map you think has more potential!

Though I think an accelerated composition of how the map is built from scratch will be quite awesome for a video, I feel the stream process is a tad slow. Even if you allow for feedback and really allow the community to 'help' with the process it will still be slow and possibly boring for most viewers.

However, I do believe that this kind of stream is absolutely perfect for helping people learn how to use the editor and all of it's functions, which is a very positive aspect of this idea.

Good luck with it.
Comparing BW with SCII is like comparing a beautiful three-master sailing ship with a modern battlecruiser. Both are beautiful in their own way, both perform the same task, but they are worlds apart in how they are built and how they are steered.
