[G] Overview of Foliages and how to use them

Hey guys,

this is an overview of all the different foliages which are by default assigned to specific textures but of course you can and should always experiment with this and mix it up to create something new and interesting.


So first of all I should probably explain to everyone who doesn't know how to assign different foliages to a texture how it works:

First start the data editor.
Then you go to Data Type: Terrain Textures and search for the texture which foliage you want to change.
Click on it and go to Doodads.
Here you can add/remove values. These values represent a type of model or in general a mix of models that will appear as your foliage.

The options for every value are pretty self-explanatory:

Model: Choose the model/set of models you want to use (which includes like every model there is)

Probability: How probable it is for this model/set of models it is to appear, the higher you set it, the more there will be

Random Rotation: If the models are rotated randomly. Normally you will always want this cause otherwise it looks straight and unnatural.


You can add many different values and vary the probabilities to get some nice mixes.

As an example, in this screenshot I added values with the models of „Agria Tree“, „Agria Underbrush“, „Agria Foliage“ and „Agria Debris“ and got his (btw, obviously you would not use stuff this big as foliage on playable areas on your map ):

So now that you know how to do it, here is a list of models/sets of models that are used by default on certain textures or could be used (all pictures were taken on Xil Sand with Xil lighting):

Sheesh, that's a lot of pictures! Assigning foliage to a certain texture is pretty cool. Glad you made a guide to it! And these pictures are pretty helpful too.

Took me most of this day lol, the Bnet Invitational was pretty distracting... but yeah, better to finish it in one run, I wouldn't want to work on this tomorrow :D

Awesome guide I wish I knew this about 6 months ago. Back then I was doing this by texturing the map then swapping the textures and publishing before the new foliage kicked in. It was a pain and this method doesn't work anymore.

The best thing is you can even use this to add foliage to sets that don't natively have one for some truly unique textures. This should definitely be added to the compendium guide, which might need an overhaul right about now since Blizzard is posting tutorials.

I hope in the future I will see map makers use this to its full potential.
The normal foliage assigned to a texture mostly is good and makes it look natural, but if you change it you can have very nice contrasts and mixes. Hopefully good maps in the future don't only have excellent texturing and good doodad work, but also innovative foliage
