Fantasy Update
Shinhan 08/09 - Round 2 Week 1

On November 27th the Fantasy Shinhan Proleague opened on Team Liquid. Members were given a mere 48-hour window until the entry deadline to debate upon and decide their lineups. At the end of that time period, 208 people had submitted their teams and were ready to watch the first night of Proleague with a new interest and excitement….

Team Dynamics

The teams and strategies for building them were diverse. Of the 93 different players chosen, only 7 of them appeared on more than 20 percent of the teams. Leading the pack in total number of picks was (P)Bisu, who was placed on a total of 89 teams. Though Bisu did quite well for his owners in the first week, they may now understand why he was such a “good deal” as they see fim missing from the SKT lineup this week. Many of the most well known players are not always the ones that get the most places in the lineups. (Z)Thezerg and (P)Anytime followed closely behind Bisu in total picks with 84 and 82, respectively. All of Woongjin Stars’s players combined only totaled up to 81 picks, making these three players more popular than the entire up-and-coming team. Those with Anytime should also be happy, as he is off to a good start.

Owners of TheZerg may be wondering if he wasn’t just an over-hyped player. Though the newest member to SKT T1 may have lost his first match this week, he will only need a couple wins in order to return his investment. He may not live up to the initial hype and hopes of many who picked him, but he should still end up as a solid choice at the end of the season. Only time will tell. Meanwhile, his teammate (Z)s2 got the very first SKT T1 Zerg win of the season; though, unlike his teammate, he was only picked by one owner.

Not surprisingly, having the two most popular picks, SKT T1 had more total picks than any other team at 257. They were also picked as a team by the most players with 54 total picks. OGN had less picks from their team than any other with a very low total of 30. (T)Leta led the way there with a third of the picks from his team going to him. WeMade FOX was the only team not to be picked by anyone. Even ACE was picked once by someone.

Hunting for Zero-Pointers

Sixteen different zero-point players were scoured from the rosters. (T)sKyHigh was the most popular pick by far, with 39 owners selecting him to put on their team. Which of these zero-pointers are going to give big returns and which are going to be there just to collect team wins each week? So far owners of Skyhigh and (P)inter.young will be pleased, as each has gotten wins in the very first week, hopefully securing them more lineup appearances in future weeks. (T)Dongrae, the only other zero-pointer to win in the first week, was not selected by anyone.

Other popular zero-point picks include (P)han, (P)Reach, (T)Casy and (P)YoonJoong; all of which had lineup appearances this past week, except for Yoonjoong who has two this upcoming week, but so far they all failed to grab any victories. The remaining zero-pointers were picked in ones and twos and the only other zero-pointer with a week one appearance, (P)herb, was not selected by anyone.

Week One in the Books

Of the top ten players from the first round, only (T)Flash and (P)Kal from that group scored among the top ten players in the first week of round two. (Z)YellOw[ArnC] sits atop the standings currently as the first player to reach three wins and also earned himself a 3-game win streak. Despite Protoss making up half of the top ten from last season, Terran has claimed that title here in the first week, with Protoss dropping down to a measly two players on the top list. With the end of autumn approaching, will Protoss players be on the decline?

3 Lions pulled out in front of (paladin)roMAD by a single point on the final day of the week. (paladin)roMAD had spent the entire week among the top couple spots and finished the week just out of first. I asked 3 Lions to share some of his thoughts about his team and how he decided upon it.

3 Lions wrote:
Flash, Luxury, and Mind were chosen because they are often featured in the lineup for their teams. Bisu was chosen because he won the MSL, and I thought that he would not slump in the near future. Thezerg is the top zerg player for the SKT team, and I believe that they will feature him in their lineup often and that he will do very well. Midas was chosen because I thought that he was the most efficient 1 pt. choice.

If I could have chosen my team differently, I would have chosen Anytime instead of Midas, mainly because Anytime is just such a baller.

I chose many SKT players because I thought that their first half performance would not be repeated because even though I’m a CJ fan, I’ve always thought that SKT was a great team. Currently, they have won their first two games of the second half, but I think that their first real test is against Woongjin this weekend. I think that my performance later in this season might not be as good as my performance so far, but I think that I will adapt by trading away some of my SKT players so that I am not so reliant on them.

I would like to thank Semioldguy and HotBid for organizing this competition and glhf everyone!

3 Lions' Lineup: (T)Flash, (T)Mind, (T)Midas, (Z)Luxury, (Z)Thezerg, (P)Bisu, SKT

3 Lions was considering to be one of several players taking advantage of one of the trades this week and will be trading away (P)Bisu to grab (P)Kal, but has decided against it and will stick with the team he has already, even if Bisu isn't in the lineup this week he has faith it will be the better choice by the end of the season. The other popular trade this week has surprisingly been (P)Stork for (P)SangHo. I also asked (paladin)roMAD about his team as he had been gracing the top of the standings all week to see what his thoughts were.

(paladin)roMAD wrote:
I wanted to get a team that will consist of very good players but at reasonable cost. Actually I have only 1 player that was picked because I am a fanboy. It's Jangbi, and he's paying off not as good as I wanted. I would have picked Effort instead of Jangbi, but I don't want any regrets. What's done is done and I am sure Jangbi will do well.

I am very glad my team is doing this good, but I kind of predicted that, when I saw the mathes of week 1. I am counting on appearances and wins from the players of my team. Some of them might easily play in ace matches, since they are very strong players in their teams.

I want to thank semioldguy and Hot_Bid for this very entertaining event. Hoping to see more of this kind in the future. I also would like to wish all the participants good luck and have fun in the league. Hope the best team wins!

roMAD’s Lineup: (T)Mind, (Z)Luxury, (Z)GGPlay, (P)JangBi, (P)Bisu, (P)Anytime, Woongjin

I also talked to intrigue, who is tied for second place...

semioldguy: How'd you pick your team?

intrigue: hmmm, I copied Hot_Bid and IntoTheWow. LOL. and I like skt1 uniforms, especially since cj changed their jackets. -___-

semioldguy: What about the other differences from their teams?

intrigue: hm, he had... he had woongjin? I forget which ones I had different from him. interyoung sounds like a douchebag and um, tbh i have no idea.

semioldguy: Are you surprised to be in second?

intrigue: No way. Why would I be surprised to be one of the best?

semioldguy: What do you think about the two teams ahead of you?

intrigue: they are bad and their owners are idiots.

semioldguy: Anything else you want to add?

intrigue: hmmm, fantasy proleague is pretty easy.

intrigue's Lineup: (T)Fantasy, (T)sKyHigh, (Z)Jaedong, (P)BeSt, (P)Bisu, (P)young, SKT

There you have it... a look inside the minds behind the top three teams in Fantasy Proleague after the completion of the first week of play. The three teams are all considerably different from one another with (P)Bisu being the only common player between the three of them.

Looking Ahead

Several players in the top ten look to be set up to continue their top performances for owners. The top two point scorers from week one, (Z)YellOw[ArnC] and (T)Fantasy, face off against each other at the end of next week. Both should be the favorites in their previous matches so look for these two to stay in the top ten for at least another week.

Other players that should do well enough to stay in the top ten are (T)Flash, who always performs well and has two relatively easy matches this week besides. (T)Leta, (T)Mind and (Z)GGPlay all look to have a pair of winnable matchups this week as well and are all likely to continue on their hot streaks.

Looking at the lineups there are a couple others who could have good showings in the second week. (T)Sea.Really has a couple of easy matches and could pick up wins in both. (Z)Calm could very well redeem himself after a disappointing first week as STX faces a couple weaker lineups of ACE and WeMade.

(Z)Jaedong owners might have been disappointed last week by the loss to (T)Sea, but this week doesn’t look any more promising when he faces a rematch against (T)firebathero. Samsung, Lecaf, MBC and CJ Entus all play only one match for the second week now. Owners with lineups based off of any combination of these teams may fall behind a bit here in the beginning, but look for them to come on strong as the season progresses and all four of these teams start getting two matches a week for most of the rest of the way out while other teams will be getting their “bye” weeks.

THANK YOU FOR FANTASY PL!

You should put little emblems next to the name of the winners like they do for liquibet season winners.

Needs an interview with DeadVessel to ask why he picked all of MBC except (T)Sea.

I'm pretty sure he will still be in dead last at the end of next week (hopefully even at negative points) I can interview him then.

looooooool

Yes, I'm following proleague a lot more. I check lineups as soon as they are out, translating them with the help of TLPD. I think i memorized costs of about 75% of the players...

I also check top teams coincidences and hope those coincidences will lose.

I open the PL Rankings after each round of matches, F3, search for "intothewow" and note position. Then I repeat procedure but now searching for "sonuvbob". When i see him way below me, i feel warm inside.

I love fantasy PL.

Very true.

Intrigue's interview is great.

The trick was to pick players and teams (teams especially) that will improve. I think this is going to be deeply disrupted because half way through Boxer's going back to SKT1 and SKT1 will start winning a little more than it has been winning.

It's a great thing that semioldguy is doing this. I was already very into this PL season (first PL season I'm following "seriously") and this fantasy league adds a lot to the experience.

im so fucking sad... when i made my analisis my last choice was a 4 point value player. I conclude it had to be a terran, with good pvz mainly => the choice ended on Light or Mind. I looked at the last games played and mind didnt looked that good and light was on a 4 win streak. I choosed light then, given the fact that sea was underperforming and wemade<hero. should i chose mind now id had 38 points and nice numbeer one. im so sad...
Help me! im still improving my English. An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. M. G.

By far this is quite possibly the most interesting proleague season. Brings a different element to sometimes lackluster proleague matches.
