The groups were drawn after the group G/H broadcast. The group spot (for example D4) was drawn first and a drawing of the player (for example IMKangHo) going to that group was drawn subsequently.
THESE GROUPS WILL BE PLAYED IN BO3 ROUND ROBIN STYLE. The maps Gwangalli Beach and Anaconda will be available starting this round.
Map 1: Gwangalli Beach Map 2: Akilon Wastes Map 3: Anaconda Map 4: Newkirk Redevelopment Precinct TE Map 5: Whirlwind LE Map 6: Bel'Shir Vestige LE Map 7: Star Station
is this really a fair drawing haha ? Protoss so nicely spread and Zergs and Terrans will eliminate each other xD. Poor Innovation though, but atleast he only needs to prepare TvT and pray his Hellvacs will save him.
round robin huh, they really dont want it to be like GSL at all....even though that's what the rest of WCS is modeled after...i just hope they get rid of bo1
Lol I saw the other post with 5 answers first, and I was completely sure that it was a troll post, because well, how could random groups be so trollish?
I'll get em on LP in a few minutes if no one else is doing it Done. (Still don't know how match 3-6 players are determined though).
Ok, let me explain it..
for example there's group A with 4 players : a b x y
and the match is :
match 1: a vs b match 2: x vs y match 3: a vs x match 4: b vs y match 5: a vs y match 6: b vs x
and at the end of the 3 weeks, we can figure out the total point of this group.. then determine the 2 winners of this group..
just like the football world cup group..
Yes, I get that it's round robin, but is it actually going to be "a vs x" for match 3? Or are they going to do winners v losers, or winner 1 v loser 2, or some other scheme?

It doesn't really matter all that much, they have to play each other once anyway.

Yeah, possibly not for the group result, but it matters for the map order.
Should be good. Group B is the group of death, I guess, if there has to be one. Flash and Innovation sure are scary, but the other two are so-so (Bomber) and meh (Bbyong). Far from the most deathy group of death we've had.
Anyway, Gwangalli Beach should be fun. Not sure what to make of it yet, which is interesting. Anaconda looks very similar to Zerus Prime, but that might be because of the rare tile set.
On June 28 2013 00:21 yrt123 wrote: Pretty balanced groups it seems. Group D is easiest group though. Group B is gonna have the highest HPM ever in SC2 history.
Watch out as Kangho gets out of his group (relatively easy), lucks out in the round of 8 and gets matched against Soo and sneaks into the season finals again, going for another fluke.
Good chance either flash or innovation goes out since they square off right away, I consider group A the group of death though. Bomber and bbyong are among the worst of this ro16 where group A is three really good players and SoO then which i still think is ok.
Why isnt group A GoD? They have the best results excluding soO, the terran group's best results are all from innovation. Remember what they said about bomber? He will always disappoint, but there wont be anything disappointing if we have no expectations for him to make it past flash or innovation. It would only be a group of death if flash or innovation were both in jeopardy of not making it out, but they can definitely handle bomber and bbyong. Group A, however, has parting, a regular to the ro8 and even ro4 once, symbol as well, even the last runner up in WoL and showing as much strength in hots, and soulkey!!! He won code s last season!!! Ro4 season 1 finals. He beat innovation. How is that not a group of death????
Group B is good because 2 T will be eliminated so we will have better race balance in ro8. More different MU is better in my opinion. And probably the first season that we won't have 4 zergs in ro8 for 8 months. Despite huge % of terrans advancing to ro16, ro8 race balance gonna be nice it seems.
Edit: Omg this Gwangali Beach! I really don't know what to think about this map

Dont speak too soon, we could still end up with 1 zerg, or no protoss

1 would not be nice. But i think that KangHo will advance too.
I don't think there are really any groups of death given these brackets. Groups A B and C consist of 2 proleague starters (Group A has 1 Ace(Soulkey), Group B has 2 Aces(Bogus,Flash), Group C has 1 Ace(Rain) and Group D is the group of rejects. Group A and B have clear favorites (SK,Parting and Bogus,Flash) while group C is somewhat up in the air (Rain probably a favorite to get first, Fantasy and First battle for second, Hyvaa sees if he can cheese anyone out). Group D is pretty lackluster maybe Trap and Supernova get out.

Kangho will be lucky to win a single map. I'll go one step further and say that if there are no patches, you'll have no Zerg left in ro 4, if the remaining Zerg gets a ZvT.

We'll see, but i feel like its more likely that Parting won't advance than KangHo will be crushed he has the easiest group.
I love this style of playing one match from every group every playday so much, it's amazing! 1.) better preparation for players - instead of preparing for three opponents, you prepare for only one of them, meaning you probably will spend more time researching that player. Also, preset maps are awesome imo... 2.) if we get a group like group B (all terran), it is not a boring day of TvT all day every day, it is pretty balanced
Seriously, this may be even better then standard, dual tournament, 1 group per day system GSL uses...
Am I the only one that has noticed that Gwangali Beach is asymmetrical? I mean, it's not a huge difference between the sides, but it's definitely there... wonder how it will affect playing on that map...
Such fail again. You have ZZZP group A and TTTT group B.
When do they learn to use P Z T baskets to make groups more balanced considering races? Anyone is bored by mirror matches and esp. TvT nowadays (i play terran myself).

I think its because he hit that massive slump until HotS came out and now he is a monster. What I find interesting is the terran pull through rate here. Keen was the only one to NOT make it to the round of 16.........
Hellbat TvT is brilliant, I love the non-stop action of constant drops and defending and with insane multitasking. Almost every game has some form of early aggression unlike TvZ and TvP, and there are still many different openings available. It's definitely the matchup with the highest skill threshold which is why even so many top players makes mistakes, and many games often hang on a knife edge early to mid game.
Both innovation and flash have pretty darn solid TvT nowadays, don't see the other 2 having much of a chance unless they bust out some super refined build or timing. Funnily enough, hellbat drops reward players with the best mechanics due to the decision making and multitasking involved.
I'm not sure why Group B is the group of death. It has two of the best players in Innovation and Flash, but because of that them advancing is pretty much a forgone conclusion, outside of the small chance of a Bomber upset or something. Group A has three really good players instead of two, even if none of them have quite the hype behind them that Innovation and Flash do. On top of that the outcome of group A is much more debatable.
And on another topic, is it just me or is Group D the weakest GSL/OSL/WCSkr ro16 group in recent memory?
On June 28 2013 03:10 Schelim wrote: i wonder what they'll do if there's a three-way tie
They do not take map score into account for breaking ties, so I get the feeling that they hope they will get ties.
In case of a 3 way tie they will play as many Bo1 round robin tie-breakers as it takes to break the tie. IIRC they usually have a day set aside for tie-breakers.

Meh, most people are referring to the tournament as OSL or Starleague. Qualifying for the WCS season finals is an afterthought compared to becoming an OSL champion. I have to think most people that actually watch WCS Korea feel the same way (that GSL / OSL is more important than WCS).

The result of a random draw.

what... Group A and B are godlike. Most stacked groups ever. Group C and D are bleh. Cool players, but not even one tournament contender compared to pretty much all tournament contenders.
How did this happen?
Edit: Random draw..... wth are the OSL people retarded? I understood when they wanted to keep their old format even though it doesn't work in SC2 because it's SC2 and not SC:BW, but random groups....... T_T Way to ruin the tournament -_-

They had group selections in BW. This, ironically, is them keeping in line with the other WCS events
(I'm actually not sure why they did a random draw, but it isn't to be more in line with hose they did things in BW)

Yes I know, the other WCS tournaments don't have the players in the same country/area and thus can't have them select groups live, so they instead do random draw. Even if it's kind of a bad idea, it kind of makes sense too. Doesn't make any sense for OSL to do it though. That's just lazy and bad tournament organizing.

Gotta agree with you there.
And Parting lucked out, just practice PvZ and he should come out at least in second, while the zergs have to focus on ZvZ for the best chances.
Group D is really weak compared to the other groups. Whoever makes it out of there, will be an easy victim to whomever he meets, imo. And Rain and First, the two players I'm rooting most for, in the same group, yikes. I hope at least Rain makes it (and takes the season, P representin').

j/k, I'm really glad that Rain made it, and hope he takes the whole season. I mean, in a sense he is the defending champion...kinda.
OMFG OSL has the worst tournamentformat I have ever seen in any sport. Seriously, first it was Bo1, now it's 3 week long long round-robin... Next I expect semifinals before quarterfinals.

This format should lead to better games than the other format. Players have more time to prepare, and with fewer games to prepare for at any single time, they will be better prepared for the specific maps played.
What's the opinion on the volatility of hellbat TvT? Does it make TvT more volatile? From what I've seen so far, the better player (mechanics wise at least) tends to win. If bat TvT isn't as volatile as some people suggest then Group A is probably more of a Group of Death.

I don't care about volatility. It's pain to watch. Compared to tactical siege tank-based play TvT with eventual air switch this is just random BS all over the place.

You know I could make a case for many things in the game, but I rather try to enjoy it than bitch about it. It's a funny thing because if you read most interviews with the guys who are near the top. They say the same thing. They don't think about it that much, they just do it.
People whining about the format don't know anything about Starcraft 1 or OSL...This is the most prestigious Starleague ever and this format was used for over 10 years. GSL is not the be-all and end-all tournament . To call-it fakeGSL is the most idiotic thing ever. Players now have time to properly prepare their matches not like in GSL.
Group B is only group of death if you're talking about SCV kills. Flash and Bogus should advance without too much trouble. But in which order are they playing? I mean if Flash vs Bogus is first, that might put some pressure on whoever loses that match.
Group A, C and D are all cointosses to me. A: ZvZ so hard to predict, and PartinG have to face some tough opponents. I think Soulkey is going to advance, but could really be anyone. C: Rain could(/should) probably make it out of this group, but I really think it depends on the placement of the matchups. "Bad" planning could make it hard for Rain to advance, or put the pressure on him. Anyone is capable of advancing. D: Really hard group to predict, but they deserve to be where they are. SuperNova made it look easy defeating Squirtle and Parting in his ro32. I think KangHo might have some problems advancing from this group tho. Trap is pretty decent against zergs, and Maru is not bad either. I actually believe this could end in a 3 way tie.
On June 27 2013 23:10 forgehammer wrote: Man, group D looks really weak. Other players probably just hoping to face one of the people that advances from there in the Ro8.
unfortunately I completely agree with this. if i were to rank these 16 players, no one in group D would be in the top half.
After watching Bomber vs Keen, totally looking forward to Group B. First time I have actually laughed about a matchup ever.
I dont see Hyvaa or Kangho making it out of their groups and they are going to have a tough time against Parting in Group A... could be just 1 zerg in RO8.
My picks Group A: Soulkey + Parting Group B: No damn clue because TvT seems retarded. Innovation/flash are the obvious picks, but bomber has some good medivac/hellbat control. Group C: I think First/Rain is a strong possibility. Group D: Hard to call but Supernova and... Trap.
Well, after group B we will now if Hellbat drops can be countered. These guys must be practising it, and the one that finds the counter will roll teh group.
If there's one thing I'd like the GSL to adopt from the OSL is how they don't play out a whole group in 1 day. That way the players get more time prepare for each of their opponents, rather than to less time to prepare for 3 players at once.
Group D is shockingly mediocre... Does anyone know if the Ro8 will be done the same way as previous GSL seasons (i.e. winner of group A will face runner-up of group B and vice-versa, etc.)?
Here is written that Bogus and Flash are to play the 2nd of July, but in the WCS portal - the 4th of July. So, can anyone say when they are really to play?
