Some seriously depressing results yesterday in week #1 of the Ongamenet Duel Tournament (NOTE: dunno what the Duel Tournament is about? Check out my article on the format of Ongamenet tournaments in our Articles section.) :

GROUP A

1) Nal_rA (P) ("Kang Min") < Mumyung (Z) ("Sung Hak-seung") - Gaema Gowown
2) ChRh (T) ("Choi In-gyun") < HOT_Forever (Z) ("Kang Do-gyung") - Gaema Gowon
3) Mumyung (Z) > HOT_Forever - Neo Forbidden Zone
4) Nal_rA (P) > ChRh (T) - Avant Garde II
5) Nal_rA (P) < HOT_Forever (Z) - Neo Bifrost

So, Mumyung (Z) and HOT_Forever (Z) advance into the next Starleague. Nal_rA and ChRh will have to start with the Challenge League all over again. OMG.

Nal_rA just wasn't his usual self today and it cost him. He fucked up with his scouting and after that he just wasn't able to play his game. His last match v HOT on Neo Bifrost lasted just over 4 mins - making it painfully obvious Kang hadn't planned on playing the final match in the losers bracket. There's just no way any protoss player is going to beat HOT on Neo Bifrost.

ChRh was just overwhelmed by two better players today. He may have had a chance v his nemesis HOT in the first match, but he made a series of catastrophic mistakes in the beginning (didn't see HOT's lings going around Kang's min natural, let the lings enter Choi's main, horrible control with rines got them all killed with like only one or two losses for the lings, pressed the wrong key and didn't realize his 2 raxes weren't pumping out more rines...omg) and that was all HOT needed. Choi never had a chance v Nal_rA in their match on Avant Garde II. Just all Nal_rA from start to finish. What a nightmare for the GO (pronounced as initials, "G.O.") team - both Nal_rA and ChRh get knocked off.

I'm gonna get a little critical now. I dunno about HOT, but I'm getting tired of seeing Mumyung in Starleague. The OGN casters jokingly dubbed him "Mr. Duel Tournament," on the one hand because of his success in the Duel Tournaments so far (has he ever lost any of his matches in any Duel Tournament?). The flip side tho is Sung STINKS in the Starleague. It's become obvious he just can't hang with the group that plays there. He may win a game or two every now and then, but I can almost guarantee you he won't make the final 8 next Starleague season, not unless he gets real flukey. He's just like Sinji_NT (Z) and Crystal[Inca] (Z), both respectable players, but seriously lacking in any real depth, but somehow always just managing to bump off much better players in the prelims, then proceeding to stink up the main event later on with woefully inept and tranquilizingly boring play. What a joke.

No, I'm not complaining because Mumyung happens to own in Duel Tournament. My beef is that he sucks so badly in Starleague! He's shown one brilliant moment (v ChRh in the SKY 2002) and that's it. The guy needs to move over and stop taking up valuable space. So, do I want him just cut from the next Starleague roster? No, of course not. Rules are rules and he won his place fair and square. But I won't be cheering for him until he shows he's capable of beating other players on a consistent basis in Starleague. Until he does, I'm gonna pray Mumyung disappears for a while from the Starleague scene. I'll be more than happy to welcome him back with open arms once his skills have improved.

NEXT WEEK: Xellos[yG] (T), 2L.Eji (P), Oddysay (T), TheWind (Z)

Mumyung!
a person repeatedly beating everything in his way in the "duel tournament" is not someone I would say has a crucial need to improve in skill.

i don't know much about his starleague situation, but getting a bad start, it's easy to lose over and over again until you just let yourself play. i think it's more things than his skill he needs to get sort out. He might need some belief in himself.

I hope he does well-.- mostly cause what you wrote about him!_!

By "skill" I meant his ability to win in Starleague. I couldn't care less if he was technically perfect.

I hope Mumyung proves me wrong, too.

i dont see whats so shocking about the results realy.Nal_Ra owned T like always and lost to Z like most of the time. To get to a starleauge he needs to play onlys Ts and Ps.
When the spirit is not altogether slain, great loss teaches men and women to desire greatly, both for themselves and for others.

Hm. Too bad. I really think if Starleague keeps only being T and Z players it stands as possibly becoming VERY stagnated and losing popularity. Hopefully there will be at least 3 Protoss players in this next league. Mensrea, do you know how many P players made it to the duel league?

I believe 6 or 7 (if you include Nal_rA). We'll see what happens, but a similar thing happened last year where, at one point, over HALF the participants who got into Challenge League ended being Protoss. In the end, tho only Reach and Garimto wound up playing in Starleague.

Nal_rA losing to HOT on Neo Bifrost wasn't a surprise. In fact, it was practically guaranteed. Nal_rA losing to Mumyung, on the other hand WAS a shock - very few expected it to happen. Nal_rA is like 7-5 now in OGN play PvZ (including his loss v Mumyung yesterday). He doesn't exactly dominate v Z, but he's certainly won his share of tough matches. Losing to Mumyung was a mistake.

Sorry to all Nal_RA Fans out-there (including me) but this guy just isn't able to play top if he is under pressure. If this continues he will never have his brakethrough.

Im not mensrea but:

Reach won the SKY .. but is sucking lately, eliminated from both the OGN and the KPGA. He has a shot at the duel tourney.

Kingdom is seeded in the next OGN

Nal_Ra lost to kingdom in the Challenge league finals, and as you just read failed another chance at the starleague.

Other toss in duel tournament is:
SoA.Eji
ForU (aka [DaK]Ddong )
IntoTheRainbow
[Kor]Zeus

5 toss players left to fight for glory and money. My guess? ForU advances. Reach and Rainbow have a shot. Eju and Zeus will die trying.

Pfff, both my fave players dropped out.

Thx Rea for expressing your (my) feelings about Mumyung. I start to dislike him.

Jinnam himself said Zeus is probably the best Protoss vs Zerg player around at this moment. Do not underestimate Zeus people, cause this guy knows how to play Protoss.

I watched these games at TV yesterday and the only thing I have to say is that I hope this is not how Chrh and nal_rA usually play their Ongamenet games; they are able of doing much better. Chrh's marine micro against HOT's 9 pool almost made me cry. He lost 4 marines before killing a single ling. After that he even lost a couple more marines and scv's. rA's play wasn't close to being impressive either. Against Chrh he played pretty good, but especially vs Mumyung he sucked really bad.

I'm not exactly a Mumyung fan, but I do want to say this guy sure knows how to play Zerg vs Terran and Zerg vs Zerg. I'd say he's the 'best of the rest' when it comes to Zerg players. He's not like Yellow, Junwi, Chojja, Jinnam and maybe HOT (HOT doesn't impress me too much though). I do think Mumyung comes in first after these top Zergs and that's certainly not something to be ashamed of.

sorry mensrea, but despite all the hype tha nal_ra gets on this board,

Mumyung > Nal_Ra

Mumyung has won a major tournament already, while nal_ra can't even qualify for one. Mumyung has also qualified for many star leagues which is an accomplishment in itself. Sure he hasn't had the best results in OGN, but I can name many top players who haven't fared well in OGN. Jinnam has been geting spanked for the past few OGN starleagues and I doubt anyone will question Jinnam's skill. I agree with naz, mumyung is no worse than the 6th or 7th best zerg in the world.

Funny you mention that Naz, one of the jinnam games I have on VOd is against Zeus on Winter Conquest, where jinnam loses.
