Still working on the logistics. For instance, a forum is needed where votes can be public, and players can ask the host questions. Also, how to hand out roles? I'd like to do it in person, but I'd have to determine ahead of time who gets what role, and then what happens if they don't show up to the mandatory meeting where roles are handed out? In addition, there's the whole "John Smith was brutally murdered by the mafia" thing showing up somewhere online, which might not go over well.

Seems interesting. Like the plot for a really bad movie! Although, I imagine it will be difficult to get people to always show up somewhere and to make would would end up being a multiple week commitment.

Well, the idea is that everyone only has to show up somewhere once at the beginning (and maybe again once it's over) so that roles can be handed out and questions can be answered. The rest is just interaction over typical school days, with votes and news being handed out online.

so people would question each other and confer like they normally would, and then decide who to lynch? The problem with this as I would see it is if you have to many people and they aren't all friends there is no guarantee they would all communicate. This would give the mafia a disproportionate advantage during lynches since there is no sense of town unity, or general knowledge meaning the mafia could bully lynches.

If you kept it to 11 people or something like a normal f11 set up and everyone knew each other/hung out and had mutual classes or something then you could have something going.

Err, the other interpretation of that was you hand out roles and everything in person then just have everyone play online, which would completely defeat the purpose of doing any of it in person.

I pitched an idea very similar to this last year at my college in our group of mafia, but nobody seemed to go for it. I'd love to talk to you about ideas I had to make it happen

N players, all Village Idiots. Players do not know everyone else is VI. Game ends Day 1.

Alternately, BC and I had the idea of an all-black game (where everyone is SK/Assassin/VI/other 3rd party roles), last man standing wins. Could be fun ^^

Trial mafia.
Instead of lynching, each person gets a fair trial. One person may accuse, with evidence, another person if they think they are mafia. Then we assemble a jury of their peers to decide. Obviously the court case shall take time, over 3 weeks if not more. In fact, that's probably just the trial.

Mafia shall have around a year to prepare for the trial, and hire lawyers.

Of course if objectionable evidence is found, the case is thrown out of court and everything is for nill.

Sounds like fun!

An Offer you can't refuse:

A one-shot ability for the godfather. Cannot be used to create an immediate mafia victory (e.g. when it's 2 mafia 3 town left). Changes one person's alignment, permanently. Night Action

Would love to play a game with this. Would be soooo hard to analyse the player this is sprung upon though.

I'm toying with the idea of a recruitment role in the upcoming Haunted Mafia. This sounds pretty cool though.

recruitment roles are possibly the single stupidest role possible. Mafia just recruits whoever has been checked and trusted, or who has worked all game to be pro town. From that perspective it kind of sucks. I am town and I work my ass off doing analysis, etc. Then next day all my pro town work is for naught because I just got taken to the team whose ass I was kicking in the previous days.

Recruitment role = bad.

in PM games it can also game break pretty easily. Unless you are a no PM game of course. But even the problems of it being a stupid as fuck mechanic are still there.

Bus Driver Role: bus driver can bus himself which makes him invincible to dt checks, night actions, and mind control
Barista: can serve one player Coffee every night, which gives then two night actions the following night should they choose to consume it
Prophet: could be a declared role (ie this person is declared prophet in the OP). Prophet is told how people died every night, and is the one to tell this information to town. Mods simply post who died. Can be mafia or can be town, alignment is not disclosed. Good for games with multiple kill roles (poisoner, etc).
Good Natured Hipster: Always gotta be doing something new! Will execute a random action every night he decides to act: will either drive a bus with a random player, roleblock, medic protect, or put on a mafia costume (returns red to dt checks but can't be killed by mafia).
Crazed Hipster: Will either roleblock, vigi hit, or transfer all night actions on himself onto his target.
NDA'd Professor: Is told the roles (not alignments) of everyone in the game, but the minute he announces or breadcrumbs what anyones role is he is fired and is removed from the game.
Alien: can abduct someone from the game for a night, blocking all night actions from that person.

I should probably also mention that I go to a pretty small college. Total number of undergraduates is ~875, and we only occupy one building. Facilitating in-person communication isn't a huge worry for me -- on any given day we see practically every other student. Also, I would think that the people that sign up would be the ones interested and able to communicate often and easily with others.

It probably would be a good idea to try something on a smaller scale first where everybody knows each other already, though.

Looking for people to brainstorm Haunted Mafia with. PM me only if you are committed and interested in cohosting the game sometime around October 23rd or so. I have a lot of ideas.

I will probably be interested in having two dedicated cohosts for this game who will communicate well with me. The game setup will likely require a lot of effort on the part of the mods. My goal is to have a fairly complex game (considering an alternate clue setup) that will result in a game more focused on behavioral analysis than games like Insane. Definitely won't be a normal game though.

Anyone who is good at:
-creating riddles/puzzles
-creative writing
-organization and communication

is encouraged to talk to me. I don't want to reveal all my ideas to everybody because I want the game to get a little bit of hype and have some surprises when it arrives. I'd really appreciate it.

EMP MAFIA
People EMP each other to uncloak them. The Mafia consists of Banshees and Wraiths. Townies can all EMP but they may EMP their own (Ghosts because they can cloak) There will be 1 Science Vessel which will die in contact of banshee/wraith but will be able to detect movement. At the end of the day, the town decides on which room to Nuke. Speaking of rooms, players can move around the rooms every day while cloaked. If uncloaked, they are open for attack and cannot recloak. Banshee and Wraith cannot EMP btw.

STAR WARS MAFIA
Just a normal game with a theme:

Mafia goons are stormtroopers
Darth Vader/Sith are roleblockers
Emperor is godfather
Garindan Long-Snoot as a framer

Master Jedis like Yoda as detectives
Jedis as medics
Wookies as veterans
Han Solo/Lando Calrissian as vigilantes
Ewoks as trackers
Droids as watchers
C-3PO as mad hatter (cos he always loses his limbs)

Bounty Hunters as assassins

Normal townies can be characters like Wedge Antilles, Admiral Ackbar etc
Nosy neighbours could be the Rebel officers like Crix Madine

Could have a "medal ceremony" at the end as well.
Sucker for nostalgia
