Well deserved win by c9. If Vulcan beats Dignitas in the 3/4 match then the LCS Summer results will have accurately displayed the top 3 teams in my opinion. Those are the 3 teams i'm most interested in seeing at Worlds at least.

do the results of the grand finals match actually matter?
Only for money. $50k vs $25k
Edit: and a bye at Worlds
So actually they matter more than any game in the group stage at worlds. (which is fucking retarded btw)
The whole tournament is flawed, what did you expect.
Seriously there are so many weird format choices, they should just copy an existing tournament structure from a different competition instead of trying so hard to reinvent the wheel

Fucking it up once can be forgiven, season 2 just exploded, they tried something new, failed, okay. You'd think they learned their lesson, but no.

There's other things of comparable stupidity, like only 1 of SKT and KT B being at worlds.
Honestly though, the only truly fair way to remedy this is to simply have only 1 season per year. With two or more seasons one of two things happen. A team wins the Spring split and then doesn't make it to worlds making that accomplishment meaningless (ala NA/EU) or a team drastically improves in the Summer and wins that split yet doesn't make worlds due to a poor showing in Spring (ala Korea). I personally prefer Korea's structure. I feel like its ridiculous to completely marginalize accomplishments of less then 6 months ago. I know many people complain about Najin making worlds due to their stellar performance 2 season's ago but they did manage to win NLB twice as well including this season, stomping Blaze in particular. It's not perfect but I think it's the best we can get until League gets to a point where we can have one long season similar to traditional sports and then Worlds based on the results of that. It will simply take time to build up this infrastructure.
I don't want to say I told you guys so..... but.... TSM TSM SOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD JUST ONE MORE TEAM TO TAKE DOWN WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP! All the doubters and haters out there underestimated the clutchness that is TSM in the playoffs! Soon to be the Number 1 NA team heading into the Worlds.. So stoked!
The could make one big season with a single standing per continent (or worldwide if they don't fear Asian domination).
OPEN IT to every team, but certain teams (the high seeded) get invited. The amateur teams can still make it, but they have to go through the open series. (So basically, a tournament will have different phases 1- Open : All non-invited team have to fight through the open 2- The rounds of 16/32 with the top seeded teams + winners of open)
Or, in order to avoid "too big" tournaments. They can make use of Ranked 5s (!!!). So basically, top ranked teams from each region get invited to the offline tournaments. They can either accept or refuse. If they refuse, then the invite is sent to a lower ranked team, and so forth. Riot could offer to pay the tickets(?) to help amateur team, or the amateur teams have to pay their own expenses (there's a risk for both party : Riots to get scammed, the amateur teams to pay and lose)
Since Riot doesn't have infinite money, it will only pay say top 8 teams like right now in LCS. So top 8 teams get money each month (or after each tournament?). So there is a big incentive to keep performing to remain top 8. There are also incentives for amateur team to rise in the ranking.
Of course, by going the competitive route, the athletes will lose all form of stability (that they currently have with LCS : getting into LCS means money for the whole season, with no considerations to your performance)
And at some point, there are the worlds where top teams are invited and then seeded into groups. Winners of groups get to play in semi - finals (or you can have 4 big international events like in Tennis : Us Open, Roland-Garos, Wimbledon...)
I think several changes can be made to the format of both the regular season and the World Championships. I do however, realize, that these things can take time to fine tune due to many restrictions, such as money, convenience, and experience.
As I wrote in my previous post, I think every region should have one long regular season similar to traditional sports (as that is what the LCS seems to be trying to emulate). This will eliminate awkward seedings for Worlds due to multiple splits.
For the actual World Championships I definitely agree the format should be changed to a 16 team tournament and that slots should be weighted by region, similar to something like UEFA Champions League. This will be difficult at first, because UEFA has a long history of data to generate an accurate formula and League does not, but you have to start somewhere. This will grant the strongest regions the most seeds but still give the weakest regions at least 1 seed for representation.
For the group stages you could either allow top seeds to pick teams to be in their groups, or you could weigh individual teams into tiers (again like UEFA champions league) and randomly draw groups into 4 groups of 4 (with 4 tiers of strength obviously).
I'm not terribly upset about how this world championships is shaping up, unlike a lot of other people apparently. I recognize there are a lot of factors that go into the decisions Riot makes. When dealing with 14 slots its not that strange to give the extra slots to NA/EU rather then Korea when its hosted in LA by an American company and their being no real benchmark to grade individual regions. I also understand that the format for each region can vary a bit and that sometimes the most recently deserving teams may not make worlds, and also that some less deserving teams could sneak into worlds at the last second. I wish a few of theses issues would already have been streamlined (a simple 16 team format for example) and hope that a few others can be worked toward next year.
