We have so much in common!
- You live in Southern Africa and Botswana is so close to Lesotho!
- Both of the languages spoken in our country are part of the Sotho based languages.
- Both countries are primarily Christian.
- You participate in the TL LOL Sub Forum
- You also think wei2coolman should try harder!
I am only in Lesotho for 3 more weeks, but maybe we could visit and discuss such interesting topics such as the reading comprehension of this forum, their inability to admit they are wrong, and why TSM is the best LOL team!
On the note of being back in 3 weeks, before I went to Africa I played League for fun with no real regard for improving (because I knew I was going to be in Africa) so all I did was play a fuck ton of champions where I proceeded to drop to 600 Elo only to carry myself back up to 1100-1200 towards the end with LeBlanc and release Diana (cause holy fuck was that OP).
On my return I am looking to really improve. I decided I want a small champion pool where I can primarily focus on Top, Jungle, and Mid. I have no qualms with filling in on ADC and Support but I never really enjoyed the duo lane and I don't see that changing.
So I am looking for some suggestions:
- Which ADC and Support is pretty much always a decent pick AND is almost never picked/banned AND (although less important) can be played in Top, Jungle, or Mid if necessary?
- Which champions that can be played Top, Jungle, or/and Mid are pretty good for getting back to the basics of League and actually learning how to play this game instead of trying to get pentas with Katarina?
- And how many champions per role do you think I should have? (except for ADC and Support where I really only want 1 for each.)
Champions I have enjoyed in no particular order:
- AP Ez (OK def my favorite but no one let me play it in ranked)
- AP Malphite (and regular Malphite, but DFG so much fun)
- Katarina
- Ahri
- LeBlanc
- Akali
- Diana
- Galio
- Nocturne (but holy shit I suck at him)
- Vlad
I know this will probably garner a lot of different personal responses, which is OK, but please don't just say the champion. I'd love to hear your honest opinion on WHY they are so fun to you AND why you think they are good for a rusty as fuck League player who is looking to improve (read: learn how to play this fucking game) at League of Legends.
ps I left after S2 WC Group Stages, so any champion released after that I have only read about or seen very short youtube clips at 240p quality, so keep that in mind when explaining newer champions..

LOL that person is from Botswana about as much as krndandaman is from Mozambique 2. I started with farm6 junglers and then later on moved to junglers who can do things before lvl6 and I don't think it's the worst approach. Rengar, Nocturne that you mentioned, some more niche stuff like Eve or even Amumu is playable although usually not optimal. Farm6 junglers are easy to understand and play and once you feel generally comfortable jungling you can move onto junglers with more options. Or you could adopt the reverse approach, idk, but this one worked well enough for me imo. 3. If the champion you play is almost never picked or banned (something like that Nocturne or Amumu at higher levels) I'd say stick to 1 champion. If you want to play more popular champs like Kha, Rengar, Lee then go with 2, you'll be forced to play something other than your main champion often enough.
Anyway, I love you JonGalt, but I can't wait to see you crash and burn trying to climb the ladder. I remember you claiming you're gonna get diamond in like 2 months (or something along those lines) some time back and I absolutely expect you to get royally fucked. You could surprise me, but I have a hunch :3

That's what I like about PL. He's sometimes funny, sometimes obnoxious laidback bluecollar drunk who occasionally makes a scene when he has too many. Almost like a real person guys!

You're taking him way too seriously Scip. Also don't you fret, Jon Galt, pre-season 5 will roll out and everything's going to be fucked, mostly because jungle but also fucked up leveling stat growths, so everyone will have to relearn a bunch of stuff and they'll have no more idea what they're doing than you!

The first thing I decided when building a champion pool was this: There is no style points in climbing the ladder. You'll get the same amount of points if you get pentas with Kat or somehow win games with AP Riven. If you enjoy Katarina, play her! You'll want at least 2 in the bot lane positions so you don't get randomly picked out by opposing players.
* Unless a champion is pretty broken in bot lane like Lucian(was?), release Braum, or a idiot slayer like Morgana, bot lane champions rarely get banned. Jinx and Corki are really strong right now. Graves seems to be making a comeback, which falls in line with soloq's mass teamfight meta. Sivir is making a comeback as well and her ult punishes over extending due to shitty warding and is one of the more blatant "gogogogogogogogogogo" buttons. Sona is pretty dumb currently, though Riot is actively looking at her. Outside of that, the popular supports are Janna, Leona, Blitzcrank, Braum, and Morgana. For botlane flex picks, Lulu can work decently well in both solo lanes. Quinn is the bane of everything melee in top lane.
* If you're goal is to get back into the game, you'll want to focus on simple but effective. Champions like Gnar are stupid strong, but have a higher skill floor than most, so you're better off not learning him to start. You're in luck with mid, where Kataina, Akal, and Ahri are probably some of the strongest soloq mids. Maokai, Irelia, and Malphite should be able to hold you over in top. Jungle will be a clusterfuck going forward as the Season 5 jungle will radically change, well, everything.
*At the very least, I suggest 2 champions at each position, expanding to 3 for your main position. Tack on another champion if one of your picks happens to be a common ban.

If you were serious about improving, surely just using a minimal amount of champs would be best. At least 2 for each role, maybe only 1 for ones you don't care about. If you plan on playing 'meta' picks, you'll need to have more than one option, because bans can screw you.
My theory is just play what you enjoy. You'll be more motivated to learn and improve, and it will be better when you lose. There's no reason why you can't put together decent picks for each role (with some overlap between roles) from the list you provided, except for support. So from your list I'd say:
Top: Malph, Vlad, Akali Mid: Akali, Diana Kat/LB/Ahri maybe even Vlad Jungle: Malph, Diana ADC: Ez (I love Blue Ez) Supp: Probably where you lack a solid pick. I like Nami because she fits in with pretty much any team. She has a tough to land skillshot, but is fairly simple.
Just my thoughts.

I really like Alistar support in solo queue. You can always bodycheck people away from your squishies, you can knock people in the air like you just don't care when they try to dive again, you literally can not die during your ult, you can build awesome, truly truly awesome minionwave pushes with your heal.
Max W first, from rank 2 onwards it's a great poke tool against supports who want to show you who's boss. You are. You are the boss. Bodycheck them right back to their tower where sissies like them belong. Even if it doesn't do the hilarious damage it did before the autoattack "fix", it still does decent magic damage and is so, so, so very infuriating to get knocked back all the fucking time and NOT BEING ABLE TO DO ANYTHING AGAINST IT.
I also like him a lot because people are retards and get caught/dove on ALL THE FUCKING TIME. If only there were a champion on the team that could physically remove cocky little bitches like that on a 10 second cooldown...
No seriously, you don't even need to be able to WQ. If you watch a few games of pro play with Alistar (whenever he is in meta for a few weeks), you will notice that about half of the support players prefer to walk up to people, knock them up and then knock them back. The threat of you with mobos just casually strolling torwards them is just as powerful as actually landing a combo (which solo queue retards with their chobo mechanics and reaction times never execute on anyways).
You also get one of the greatest taunts in existence.
TL,DR: You can't milk those.

As for jungle, general consensus appears to be to pick a super safe super fast farmer that explodes at level 6 in terms of power.
TheOddOne heavily advocates Diana, Zac and Sejuani.
Warwick should obviously do well, although probably slow as fuck. Udyr should do well. Lee Sin will aways do well, although he is historically an early game champion and loses a lot of his power if he doesn't convert kills on himself but has to farm.
Edit: Also, if you want to be hipster and be ahead of the curve for a few weeks, look into top lane Viktor.
Solo lane Quinn is the bane of anyone melee and/or squishy. Perfectly viable in mid or top. What the Moose has an awesome guide on her. Role/playstyle-wise she falls somewhere between Vayne and Zed. With WTM's build you are mainly a tank buster in large 5v5 teamfights, while being able to assassinate lonely rotationers, teamfight survivors or splitpushers. You can also splitpush and duel pretty much anyone.

I really miss some quality skins :\ at least for champions that I use to play. Captain Volibear looks pretty decent but he's average nowadays. Battlecast Kog'Maw is fine too but I don't play ADC's :\ and Battlecast Skarner looks pretty crap as for legendary skin.

Akali can be played top or mid and I agree she's enjoyable especially for killing the noobs of yolo queue. It's fun to spot noobs (squishes) and just chase them and kill them and make them cry. Shroud jukes are also very troll and fun. Anyways, Akali fairly easy to play since there's no skillshots. You just need to know what you can and cannot do. Also, there's actually a lot amount of quality guides and tip and tricks on Youtube I found that helped me abuse Akali.
https://www.youtube.com/user/Shadybunnylive specifically his Diamond Akali guide
https://www.youtube.com/user/Zaptar2 all his tip and tricks show you the combos and stuff.
Jinx and Lux are really fun champs with good cc, damage and execute (LAZER/SUPER MEGA DEATH ROCKET). They suck if you miss your skillshots though. You should play them then to agonize over derpy skillshot fails and realize clicking buttons is hard.
Leona is really fun. You have lane presence. Also support is sooo eeeaaassyyyy.
Seriously for the most fun...
I recommend AP tryndamere. It's fucking fun - 6 second spin is the best. You also can demoralize the enemy laner if you win lane somehow, because you were fucking AP Tryndamere
I also recommend playing Quinn, but you have to roleplay. You must yell VALOR TO ME! NOW VALOR! It's really fun.

i wonder how hecarim fares in the new jungle with the sustain from his W. i get the impression that balance wise he is in a pretty decent spot now since it's been a long time since he's been nerfed and plenty of other junglers have taken hits in the meantime.

I failed to find a rune/mastery setup that worked well for Hecarim in the new jungle. The fundamental issue was Q, it eats a ton of mana for not that much damage. Q makes Hecarim blue-dependent, but for that trouble he's actually pretty slow which in turn increases the damage he takes.
If they change/remove the reduced monster damage on his Q he'll probably be fine.

Grudgematch December 2014, never forget.
Malph is pretty much always fine top, if you can ult effectively and reliably he makes life that much easier for everyone on your team. The only real issue is his first few levels are absolute garbage.
Ahri's probably the other one on the list that's somewhat reliable regardless of how the changes pan out.

It's just I've yet to see anyone say they're gonna get high league and then actually do it. I've only ever seen people do it quietly. There just seems to be a curse to announcing it beforehand.

It's kind of true. Picking solo Q champions with high win % and low clmpetitive usage is the easiest way to improve.

I'll take you up on that offer. I'll announce that I'm gonna go from bronze to diamond in season 5. I'm a curse breaker.
