Unless you're at the wrong distance at the start of your w and the knock back pushes them out of the q range even though you had the right button mashes.

When I play Alistar I press W and then press Q as fast as possible, but I was out of range for W so it did nothing. Then since I still have W, I headbutt someone away who was about to die and my team rages at me.

Take W off smart cast, obtain combos.

I just tested it and it seems to knock people back the same distance regardless of initial HB distance. So I was wrong. Now i just don't know why Alistar's HB combo has been so hard for me to land recently, even with good ping

Ali combo is easy
Literally what you do is take W off smartcast, and have range indicator on all the time. Click enemy unit of choice, and the moment range indicator disappears start mashing Q. Or alternately, look for when Ali suddenly begins to charge like the cow he is and start mashing Q. Perfectly possible even with 100 ping.

My way of doing Alistar combo:
WQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ
Works 90% of the time.

If you dodge a promo game, does it just count as a loss or what?

Yes, loss in the promo series.

I wouldn't mash.
Just plink W->Q and it works every time as long as your W is in range. I also use smartcast.
That is, just hit Q a single time around a frame after W, works always. Can also be slower but you can do it very very fast and it's still ok.

Didn't know we were on a smash board.

I've never had a problem with alistar's combo since I started playing and my friend told me "hit w then q," I think the only times I've ever messed it up are when they went out of vision the second I clicked w on them. Is it really a thing that people have issues with?
|
I have this terrible problem where I'll hit Q before the W goes off since i'm always afraid of reacting too slowly and then I just Q from far away and look like a dipstick T-T

Ya I'm not understanding the issue with Ali combo... It's been a few months since I've played an ARAM and landed Ali, but it was always very very easy on smartcast. Did they change something about the way his w works?

I don't think so. The trick is just to press Q after W starts, which can be difficult if you have high latency because you might not be able to confirm your W.
I find it pretty easy to perform when you KNOW you are in W range. When I am barely in W range it's a lot trickier for me.

ARAM uses a slightly different perspective, so skillshots and such are a little odd compared to other modes
