The 9th point and 21st point in most trees provides a power spike, so having 8 and 10 in different trees is usually suboptimal. This is a common 21/9/0 AP mid mastery page. If you really want, you can move the Butcher points into Havoc, but generally I think getting a few extra CS is worth more than 2% damage (20 damage on a 1000 damage combo). You can also shuffle around the armor/MR points depending on who you're facing (e.g., you'd want the armor against an AD mid or an AP mid that auto-attacks a lot). Another common AP mid mastery page is 21/0/9, sacrificing some tankiness for longer blue buff and more mana regen. | ||

i feel like ap portion of 9++ masteries arent particular good, +6ap and 5% ap doesnt seem like significant change compared to what defensive masteries provide | ||

Havoc is amazing on APs, Sorcery is terrible. There is a reason why they've said for S4 they're buffing Sorcery from 4% to 5%. Very few AP mids where I'd prefer 3% CDR over 2% damage. Early game 2% damage is going to be better (autos), and late game you're either a mid who maxes out on CDR with items or is more concerned with damage than CDR and that's why you're not building CDR. What is everybodies obsession with Havoc being bad, it's almost the best mastery in the offense tree and we've mathematically proven it several times at this point. Assuming you go for the +6 AP over 2 AP and 3 AD (which I like a lot more on most mids, maybe not like Karthus or somebody), you're getting +6 AP, +5% AP, 5% of your AP on autoattacks, +2% damage, and +5% damage on targets under 50% HP. The +5% AP stacks multiplicatively with the +30% on deathcap, making it 136.5% total. The +2% damage stacks multiplicatively with the +5% from Executioner, making that 107.1% total. You also get much easier last hitting early game. Assuming you have 50 AD and 20 AP at the start of the game, going 9 in offense and taking Butcher you do 54 damage to last hit a minion. Going 21, even if you get 6 AP and not 2 AP and 3 AD, you do 59. With the 3 AD you do 62. I do think the defensive tree is overall a little stronger than the offense tree, but you get way more than just 6 AP and 5% AP in the bonus stuff from offense. If your role on the team is damage, you should be building to do damage, in general. | ||
