I feel it's a bit like the NBA playoffs- sure a lot of people get in, but realistically there's only a few teams that have a legit shot at winning the whole thing. Granted, practically anyone could get the 3rd playoffs slot. That's sort of like the equivalent of the wild card in baseball. Keep people interested because their team still has a chance.

so uh.. why is udyr not played at the top level again? i am lower league, so i don't know, but damn i carry so hard every time. doran's blade start is super super good.

Because it's difficult to clear the distance from river to the lane with only movement speed against anyone who is at all competent. If you have an escape, you can avoid an udyr gank. If you have a ward, you can avoid an udyr gank. That's every champion in the game. The game was much different when udyr was OP. The skill of players has increased, champion power levels has increased, and it just left a champion that walks up to people in the dust.

In that case; depends what you mean by "top level"; haven't seen him in Korea, but Diamond's been trying to make it work in EU LCS.

I think main issue had to do with really cheap vision early on; where Udyr used to be "op'd" at, but now you can see him from a mile away, so his ganks so useless now. Riot shifted a lot of his ganking power to roaming power; no one can really duel an Udyr right now, so that's why we see a lot of Tigerdyr in jungles now.

He has a lot of sheer force though. It's very hard to duel Udyr.

yeah it's kind of a 180 in watchability. I still think it could be more BW-ey with less big armies which nobody wants to see, as far as I can tell, but it's gotten pretty good.
