I'm not saying I deserve to be X since I haven't played in 5 months and really suck in laning. But isn't it odd that for promotion games you're matched against (and have to win 2 out of 3) against people of your MMR instead of your division's MMR? If I'm Silver II and trying to get promoted, shouldn't my test of skill be to beat up some Silver II people 2 out of 3 times, instead of whatever MMR I'm at? EDIT: Loved Moonbear's Diablo 3 reference. Do people still play that game??

Incoming Off Topic I know I've briefly talked to Syl and Asmo about this: Does anyone here play Smite? When I was home after graduation, I was playing it a lot since my home internet wasn't quite reliable enough for Ranked LoL. For those that don't know, it's a F2P MOBA set in 3rd person view. All moves are skill shots. You play as a god from some Mythology (Chinese, Greek, Mayan, etc.) It's currently in open beta, and it's gotten a lot better since when I first played it last year. There's actually a limited time offer going on in the store for it now. For $30, you can get all current and future gods, which leaves all of your free currency (Favor) to be spent on lots of the skins they offer, which is pretty cool. Feel free to add me (Soniv), I'm sure I'll be playing it again once I has internets. On Topic (kinda) Panda Annie only Annie

At the very least, if you're silver II and up for promotion, you should be beating up silver I (or perhaps even gold V) players. Beating up silver II players 2/3 times doesn't prove anything about whether you deserve to be in silver I. The current system works okay because, if you get your MMR too high for your division, you get back into promotion matches after every game (+50LP for wins) and statistically you'll eventually win 2/3. The whole system would be so much cleaner without promotion series but meh :\ EDIT: I think the main confusion many people have from the division system is that it reflects your performance, not your matchmaking. Being in gold isn't a prerequisite for being matched with golds, rather, being matched with golds (and winning) is a prerequisite for being placed in gold.

At best you can say you're at least as good as the players in that division. The bar is 2/3 (as opposed to say, 2/4) because they want to avoid promoting people who don't deserve it more than they would want to avoid not promoting people who do deserve it, which is reasonable, since that cuts down on how much demotions take place. EDIT: Actually, the bar is 2/3 because they want to "simulate the experience of being in a tournament best of 3", which is somewhat dumb. Oh well. EDIT2: Basically, my point is, if you win 2/3 against players of your division it doesn't prove anything (winning 20/30 would mean something, though...). Winning 2/3 against players of a higher division does mean something, though. It's not really how the division system works but it's the right mindset to have.

EDIT: I'm sorry for turning my post into a basically bitch-about-the-league system when everyone already has their opinion on the matter. Anyway, something actually content related - How is Zed now (he's on sale)? I know people shied away from him post-nerfs but the Koreans were playing him a ton in all-stars, though I think that was pre-nerf.

The other way to look at it is, Silver I might represent and "Elo range" of 1400-1500 (let's say), but the system requires you to achieve an Elo of 1450 before it puts you in Silver I (this way, you have some wiggle room to go down and not get immediately demoted). In this context, it is reasonable to make you play against Silver I players in your promotion matches.

Its been at the very least 3/4 wins. Usually 4/5 Because u have to work your way into promotion series first and then go 2/3, winning your way into promotion series never comes from a loss. You HAVE to win prior to the 2/3 streak. You also almost never get put into a promotion series 1 win after a loss (iunless your MMR is super high in which case fuck you im jelly), which makes it 4/5 because you need 2 in a row THEN 2/3 games. The most common way of getting into a promotion series is getting to 60/70 points then winning 2 in a row to be thrown into promotions for a 2/3 test. So it makes it 4 out of 5 wins needed to be promoted. In which two of those wins have to be in a row or your "reset" to needing 4/5 with 2 in a row. (Going from 60-70 to 80-90 then back down again) TL;DR - It aint 2/3 wins needed, and its shoshilly. (Ofc going something like 9/10 from 0 points to promotion is entirely possible, i just wasnt going to math out anything lower lol.) This is why the league system is stupid, it requires you to go on massive streaks to get anywhere when your supposed to be at a 50% win/loss by design. Your MMR never stops getting higher / lower so you cant be expected to smash the living shit out of your opponents in a league because you might not even be facing people in it. This system would work perfectly if it wasnt paired with MMR / hidden Elo. Your better then your league, your still matched vs people in said league, you smash them on a streak and get promoted. Atm its, Your better then your league, your matched with people higher then your league (and thus relative to your skill), your expected to smash them and go on a massive streak anyway. I mean who the fuck thought it would be a good idea to make it so you need an 80% w/l ratio when the system by design TRYHARDS to make you go 50%? (80% win/loss on the assumption you need 4/5 wins which is the norm.) Instead, it does this to you repeatedly for an extended period of time before constantly throwing you in a 3/4 series (1 win to get into a promotion series) which is STILL 75% win needed on a 50/50 system. TL;DR League system is borked to fuck and means nothing.

Add to that that their minimap was really horrendous until you knew the jungle layout by heart because the icons were way too big for the pathways' width, making it impossible to know in which of the 2-3 paths you were at a given time. Made the first games really tedious, although it was more than a year ago so if they're decent they'll have improved it.
