There's a carnival going on in my home town this month and I was thinking of actually participating with some of my friends this year,but they all wanna be characters from batman.I was kinda thinking of going as some league champion or dota hero but seeing some of the cosplay stuff that people pull off,meh,too lazy to put so much effort into it.
Might just wrap myself into toilet paper and weep or get hammered and yell ITS BRAWLING TIME with a flail in my hand and keg in the other,hmhm

I mean Elo is still taken into account, it really shouldn't affect matchmaking that much. Really it's more of a cosmetic change to the way ranking is displayed. You're also still going to play against people outside of your bracket, you won't be stuck with the same people all of the time.

And hiding numerical elo makes it really aggravating to keep track of progress aside from using shiny gems and shit.

AND of course there's the fact that the bottom of every 'tier' (read: Silver, Gold, etc) will be a horrible cesspool of players who don't give a shit since you can never be demoted from a tier once you've reached it. Sure you still play against players from all different tiers depending on your hidden elo, but it totally destroys whatever point they were trying to make with this division system since the bottom 10? spots of each division are going to all have zero 'League Points' since they're shit and either got carried to their tier or trolled their way down and don't care since they've earned their reward.

I had just forgotten about how much I hated the idea of this system and now it's getting shoved down my throat like a beer bong filled with rancid sewage.

Guess it just comes down to a disagreement in mindsets. Elo was what always turned me away from ranked in the first place, but now with the leagues I'm actually going to try ranked. I guess I'm the casual scrub they are reaching for but I like a system that gives me a sense of progress and reward aside from a number that I would just get stressed out about.

Edit: Also the reason I think Riot doesn't even want people to know their own Elo is so people in champ select don't just make up random shit about their Elo to gain a better pick. I'm not saying it's right but I bet that's why.

I think it's very rewarding to overcome the anxiety elo brings though. But from a business perspective makes sense for riot.

People will just say I'm high gold or something instead of an elo number.

Ha I don't really care but I find it interesting how people freaked out about not being able to buy this skin without buying the CE. I fully expect the same thing to happen to the Sivir skin once she gets her rework.

I'd be willing to bet that the reason why Riot is going to this ratings system is because it's the system SC2 uses, and they probably talked to Blizzard about it, and Blizzard probably showed them some data showing that it's likely to get casual players to play more ranked games.

I'd also be willing to bet that while the names on the ladders or whatever at low divisions won't mean anything, but the names at the very top will. It will help give exposure to high ranked players who are not vocal in the community / don't stream etc, because it will be hard to dismiss a player when there's an official page showing their name above other professionals. I remember a few days ago 5hit was talking about how he was trying to organize scrims and tryouts and things with his friends and pro teams were dismissing him because they didn't care who he was. It'll be easier to say "Hey, I'm as good as X Y Z players even though I don't stream" when you can point to your bracket and your name above theirs.

Just a guess.

I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.

I think they'd probably like it if ranked queues were shorter. It's probably also likely that the more ranked somebody plays the more likely they are to buy RP.

Also probably likely that the more ranked somebody plays the more pro games they watch, and the more people playing ranked the less disparate the results of ranked games are.

Let's make a game out of this, what will the main stupid thing people who have no idea how anything works complain about be for the new system?

My guess is the following:

If it is basically the same system as before, and they just display your top elo as a "division tier" or something, people will lose a lot, then win 10-20 games in a row, and complain that they don't ascend a level after such a long winning spree which obviously shows that they are way better then everyone else in their division. Then a lot of people will be convinced that the new system just does not work, and lots of random rumors will spread about how it works, all by people who also have absolutely no idea about it.

Honestly speaking elo gains at the level of a few elo means nothing with regard to tracking improvement. Normal fluctuation of your elo is far greater, so elo gains less than what's necessary to move up a tier don't reliably represent improvement anyway.

That said, no demotion is going to cause some funny problems.

I just can't think of a reason it's advantageous for Riot to have more people playing ranked. There are already normals in place for people that don't want to take it competitively.

I would think people 'into' playing ranked are going to be more invested in the game instead of just considering it something they do with friends. Plus, it feeds into their whole 'growing esports' story.

Ignoring the Blizzard hate, but

If you assume that people who play ranked games are trying to win a bit more competitively than they are in normal games, you'd assume that they will try to do things to gain an advantage, and buying RP for champions/rune pages/etc is a way to gain an advantage. They're more likely to invest into the game if they think that investment is going to result in a reward, IE gaining more ELO.

It'd be a very easy thing to find statistically. Take data of all users who have played ranked games, and average $ spent on RP for all of them. Then same data of all users who never play ranked games. I'm sure Riot has this data.

And I think it's a fairly safe assumption that that data would show that the more ranked a player plays, the more money they've spent on the game on average.

Therefor, it's in Riots interests financially to get more players to want to play ranked.

it sorta bugs me that I can't tank my elo down a tier to learn something new. Instead I'd have to continue playing with the same level of players, but with a disadvantage to start with.

Not a big complaint tho, kus my elo isn't really high enough to begin with that it would ever be a problem. Plus, I suspect that the vast majority of ranked players do not share this concern.

@ alzadar, NA is working for me, except they disabled ranked queue for S3 patch.
