I have never heard Ventrilo or TS sound as good as Skype. It sounds horrible for everyone that uses Vent on streams and every time I listen to the quality of someone that claims their Vent sounds as good as Skype it's still the same annoying static, someone with a helicopter in the background and so on. Skype doesn't need any configuration and sounds excellent 99% of the time which makes it very convenient. The only issues Skype really have aside from the UI is the lack of channels and limits on how many can be in a call and so on. The sound quality is vastly superior though. People say that Vent can be configured to sound good but no server I've ever been on or heard on a stream have sounded better than the other, all are the same.

Always have preferred ventrilo since I started using voicecom. Less shit to move around and just the core essential functionality you need. I also find mumble to have terrible sound quality in comparison, but I might have just been unlucky.

I dont know which servers you have been on, but the mumble server i hang out on has excellent audio quality. Not even comparable to vent or skype. The few ts3 servers ive been on have been pretty good also. Imo mumble is also easier to use because of the audio wizard, which is a quick guide to setup your mic and the sensitivity etc.

mumble uses the same codec as ventrilo...

my vent server is set to 10 quality 32khz which is as high as it will go, I'd be surprised if mumble sounded significantly better.

vent is definitely more microphone dependent than skype though. when everyone has a decent mic it sounds good. otherwise it can be a bit tough.

one thing that sucks about skype though is that you cant turn up or down individual people and everyone complains Im too quiet even with mic volume maxed, boost on and my skype output volume maxed. people dont seem to have this issue with ventrilo.

I prefer ts and skype over vent. Vent has this annoying beeping sound when you start talking. I'm not familiar enough with the softwere to disable it. I used to use ptt, but got so used to voice activation from skype that I would never want to go back to ptt.

I don't know how anyone can use anything but Skype especially in games like WoW and SC2 where keybindings are limited. In League it may work but every server I join delays signifigantly more than skype and thats with me running at 10 ~ ping.

Skype is my prefered, even for WoW raiding, our entire 10man guild will use it to raid and you will not hear any background noise. If your finding time in SC2 to hold PTT then teach me your ways please...

League as I said may work but I can not stand push to talk.

Also I used to be a long time ventrilo user to the point where in my computer classes I sometimes caught myself holding my PTT key while chatting in real life -.-

I only use skype because its free, the call quality is fine and I only use it with friends.

Not gonna use anything that requires payment when its just me and a few friends, and skype is also super uncomplicated.

I've always hated vent. Really badly designed UI for someone who hasn't already used it for a long time and the sound quality is abysmal.

Prefer Skype. Vent and TS3 arent bad but im just too accustomed to no PTT. My mic has a on/off button so im covered

PTT button for all games = side mouse button - who uses that shit for anything ingame? It doesn't even mesh with the way my hands are mentally wired... But I find myself holding my side mouse button down when talking on skype too - kinda silly of me.

And mumble has good configurations for no-PTT. I'm really not a fan of the always-on of skype, but you can do that too in either, it's just not the default because it means everyone's a fucking mouth-breather, which is much more of a problem when you have 10+ people in a channel than it is on skype with a 3-5 person conversation.

Vent is the worst simply because of the shitty ass beep noises. Even if you turn yours off you can hear other peoples when they push their buttons. Sounds like dogshit.

I only play with 4 other people at the most for any game anymore so I only use skype. It's free, and it's easy to use. Who gives a shit about anything else.

Wow so many people complaining something is bad when a) they can't configure to program to work proper (srsly that beeping sound is like 1 tick in the options) or b) they play with people who can't

funny thread nonetheless.

and vent, ts and mumble can also work on voice activation just like skype so I really don't get this hate towards PTT when you can turn it off >_>

Skype gets ugly if 1 person lags, can disable the whole call etc. TS/Vent/Mumble have the channels, the ability to move/kick people, the ability for them to log on and join without alt tabbing the entire conversation out of sc2 in the middle of a marine/sentry vs ling bane push, and out of the 3 mumble performs the best i believe.
