If your just a couple guys I'd say skype is good but if your more then 2 or 3 a TS3 servers really good. vents pretty good for people who are lazy but ts3 is worth the effort.

I've never used Skype outside of talking to friends. I could never consider using it for gaming due to the lack of a push to talk key (unless they've added one and I don't know about it). I bind my push to talk to the "Forward" key on my mouse which makes queuing up to talk on Ventrilo or TS3 or Mumble effortless. But if you have a traditional three button mouse I could kind of see why push to talk might not be as desireable. At least not as first, most of my friends that use keyboard buttons for their PTT don't really have any complaints.

As for comparisons between TS3/Vent/Mumble, if I'm hosting a VOIP over my own server that I own I would probably pick TS3. It's nice. But if you're paying for a provider Ventrilo and Mumble are a lot cheaper than TS3 and honestly those three VOIPs are all good enough that liking or disliking them pretty much comes down to personal preference. I don't think you can objectively say that one of those three is superior (especially considering how much you can mod each one).

I've used all of them, and they're all perfectly fine.

I use skype the most because that's what my friends use.

Just curious, what is it about mumble and ts3 that makes them better than skype? I've never used either, just had experience with skype and vent (prefer skype).

Edit: are ts3 and mumble better for general chat purposes too or is it just gaming?

The ability to use push-to-talk function, which allows you to not transmit unwanted noise such as loud keyboards.

TS3/Mumble > vent in sensitivity activation. Also I had far fewer problems about volume levels in TS than vent.
Stuck.

When tapioca doesnt use push to talk you get to hear him chewing ice and wheezing into the mic while the t.v. at like 10,000% volume is blasting in the background. This is after setting him to 7% on vent. lol

TS3 #1. You can mute people in it, very convenient when you're playing with sbd next to you. It's the ONLY client with this option.

You can mute people on mumble.

Also, not only does skype lack PTT, but you also can't hotkey the mute/unmute button. If you want to mute, you need to tab to skype, which is bad if your computer isn't very good. Also, channels.

You can mute people on Ventrilo. <_<

Literally everything you can do in TS3 you can do in Ventrilo and Mumble. I prefer TS personally but have been primarily using Ventrilo because it and Mumble are significantly cheaper unless you run it off your own server. Honestly I don't think there's any advantages over each other they're all really well designed VOIPs. This is coming from someone who has used all three very extensively.

edit:
Actually the only real difference is voice quality between TS/Vent/Mumble. TS3 has better voice quality because the codec they use is newer.

-.- I use skype out of convenience because I'm on skype anyways... but its annoying because calls can cause you to minimize, and you can click on alerts of online through the client...

but yea imo vent > skype
Remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

Also Skype is a resource hog

If you want to just chat, use teamspeak or mumble. Skype is nice for video, but not necessary for gaming.

Yep, gaming on a laptop ftl! TS/mumble are more forgiving on your cpu and have equally good quality. Push to talk is nice to get rid of the background noise

Between skype and vent I'd much, much rather use vent. Though I have a crappy computer and can't run skype along with LoL. Though I like Mumble better for the sensitivity.

I prefer Teamspeak. I used to use Skype, but it was a resource hog, so I tried out TS and will never go back.

You can also locally mute people on ventrilo.

I'm not sure how to set it up on TS (I'm sure it's possible, though), but Mumble and Ventrilo you can Normalize incoming volumes, so you don't have some people (who just naturally talk louder, or who have dumb mic settings) blasting your ears off while others are barely audible. To my knowledge, skype doesn't do this.

Also, PTT side mouse button = best PTT button!

...why does no one ever think of mumble? I have to use mumble and vent pretty frequently while playing LoL, and *every* time I'm on vent I wish they would switch over to our mumble server. Vent has a larger delay/lag (in my experience), sounds a billion times worse, and has less easy-to-access options like muting and deafening yourself. TS3 I've only used a handful of times, and it seemed nice but, like people here have said, kind of confusing/complicated to use at first. It feels to me like mumble has a lot of the features people like in TS3 (especially if you start delving into the more complicated server-side stuff-- you can set up who has access to what rooms, linking rooms together temporarily, etc etc). And it's completely free/open source!

I can still see why people would like to use TS3 or skype but I have *no* clue why there are still people who stick to vent.

Imo mumble is the best because it has the best audio quality, its easy to use and its light. Ive used both skype and vent in the past and the audio quality of vent has been trash. Skype is heavy on the memory and its hard to use when you got i.e. a 25man wow raid. It's also really easy to send pictures in mumble too and I find it really useful.

Last time I checked you couldn't mute people on Mumble :/ This must be a recent (<1 year) feature.

Anyway they're all kinda the same. From the server point of view, I only installed a TS3 server, and I can tell you it's very easy (5 minutes or so, up to 512 people).

Ive been using mumble for around 2 years and im quite sure you were able to mute someone when i started using it. An admin can mute someone so noone can hear him or a normal user can local mute someone so only he doesnt hear the muted one.

I've been using mumble for games for the last 2 years and i prefer it over skype. I like the PTT feature, Overlay customization ofc, but having multiple channel and being able to jump in the SC2 channel and ask if someone is available when we are lacking a last player for LoL, or just staying in the general discution discussiong skyrim waiting for my buddy to finish his game.

Maybe i havent used skype enough, but i dont think it has the same flexibility as a Mumble/Vent/TS3 server...
