As for comparisons between TS3/Vent/Mumble, if I'm hosting a VOIP over my own server that I own I would probably pick TS3. It's nice. But if you're paying for a provider Ventrilo and Mumble are a lot cheaper than TS3 and honestly those three VOIPs are all good enough that liking or disliking them pretty much comes down to personal preference. I don't think you can objectively say that one of those three is superior (especially considering how much you can mod each one).

I use skype the most because that's what my friends use.

Edit: are ts3 and mumble better for general chat purposes too or is it just gaming?

TS3/Mumble > vent in sensitivity activation. Also I had far fewer problems about volume levels in TS than vent.

If you want to mute, you need to tab to skype, which is bad if your computer isn't very good. Also, channels.

I prefer TS personally but have been primarily using Ventrilo because it and Mumble are significantly cheaper unless you run it off your own server. Honestly I don't think there's any advantages over each other they're all really well designed VOIPs. This is coming from someone who has used all three very extensively. edit: Actually the only real difference is voice quality between TS/Vent/Mumble. TS3 has better voice quality because the codec they use is newer.

Yep, gaming on a laptop ftl! TS/mumble are more forgiving on your cpu and have equally good quality. Push to talk is nice to get rid of the background noise

I'm not sure how to set it up on TS (I'm sure it's possible, though), but Mumble and Ventrilo you can Normalize incoming volumes, so you don't have some people (who just naturally talk louder, or who have dumb mic settings) blasting your ears off while others are barely audible. To my knowledge, skype doesn't do this. Also, PTT side mouse button = best PTT button!

I can still see why people would like to use TS3 or skype but I have *no* clue why there are still people who stick to vent.

Last time I checked you couldn't mute people on Mumble :/ This must be a recent (<1 year) feature. Anyway they're all kinda the same. From the server point of view, I only installed a TS3 server, and I can tell you it's very easy (5 minutes or so, up to 512 people).
