That is like slap in the face on starcraft 2 with the prize been so high.

Umm it's a 5-player team game. Each player only gets 1/5 of that, but you knew that right? Counterstrike gets more prize money than SC2 , although this still isn't even alot

lol gets 20.000 dollars among 20 players.
SC2 gets 14.000 dollars among 272 players.

Slap in the face sounds about right to me.

RIOT is likely putting up the money for the prize pool like they have in every other tournament lol has ever been in.

If you want to get slapped in the face, look to blizzard for not putting up any money for their own game.

Doesn't Blizzard actually charge people to run their game? Like 50% cut of the advertising revenue if it's over 5k. Now that's a slap in the face. (http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=247210)

Gamescon is this coming weekend, so I guess we'll see how well League does there. It'll probably have more viewers compared to MLG since the EU teams will actually be there.

I love playing LoL, and it's mildly entertaining to watch (depending on the commentary.. 4Deman + Joe Miller = awesome), but why do LoL streamers and tournaments use own3d.tv? Justin.tv is so much better. I hope the MLG stream will be as good as the SC2 streams in the last two MLGs.

I have the opposite opinion. I have constant problems with justin.tv and never any problem with own3d.tv.

Yeah this is definitely going to be LoL's trial by fire. But based on some of the numbers that I've heard for previous LoL streams, I think it will do very well... I kind of find myself hoping it doesn't do too well though, as I find DOTA style games to be dreadfully boring to watch. I guess what I'm saying is that I want them to be successful, but I don't want them to take any of SC2's thunder D:

There're no Koreans in LoL, so it's not supposed to be bigger than SC2.

So would the 15 million registered players, 1.4 million daily players and 3.7 million active hours of LoL games a day.

Agreed,

Lol is basically the 2nd biggest PC game out there, after Wow. SO getting an esports scene around it is a massive blessing to see how such a gigantic community fits with it.

Agreed, and the fact that its free helps that number out a lot. Dont care for it myself, but im fine with it as long as it furthers esports.

Now...to just get SF4 at MLG......Then we'll have a crowd.

It's not a question of the gameplay, it's a question of the viewers and it's been seen that LoL tournaments attract a ridiculous number of viewers. It's sad though that LoL still doesn't have a proper observer mode and we'll probably still see the crappy 6 player obs mode. -_-

League of Legends has a much improved observer mode, they released it at dreamhack
tho no pause feature lol

Yes, this seems like very little time before MLG Raleigh that LoL is suddenly/officially announced for MLG. But I'm sure Riot is pushing to have it in this MLG, instead of Orlando. They're comp'ing all the travel expenses no less.

i was about to get super mad :D that mlg would suddenly find money to support lol when they said there was none when sc2 broke into the scene. but if this is a riot funded addition, atleast for the first event them im 100% for mlg expanding to more games

There WAS none when SC2 broke into the scene, MLG picked up SC2 just barely during 2010, at their loss, and they teamed up with ING (HUGE corporation) so now they have more money.

Remember how well WoW did in MLG? Bigger =/= better. I agree that this is good for e-sports but to use the amount of users that actively play it a day as a basis for how well the game is to do would not be an accurate representation. I'm sure both Halo and CoD have more players a day than SC2, but look at the spectator numbers for each game.

This is cool, it will all come down to observing though. With 10 players doing different things till about the midgame it can be really hectic to understand whats going on for the casual person watching. Ive seen some really nicely observed matches and some really horrible ones. Either way I will definitely check out some of the action on the stream. Go ESPORTS!

if LoL had just a hefty underbase this might be relevant
but LoL also pulls in a HUGE viewercount
as you said look at spectator numbers
and LoL pulls in more then SC2

The whole "its a shitty viewer experience so it cant succeed" argument needs to stop.

200k people watched the dreamhack lol tournament at the same time. No one cares if you dont like it. 200k other people DO like to watch it. And 200k was WAY more than the sc2 streams pulled at dreamhack.

Pretty much the same reason why they include Halo:Reach and Black Ops, a lot of spectator but utterly crap in terms of competitiveness (instead of... Quake, or CS/CS:S)
