I understand that this game is 1000x easier than SC2 so a lot more people play it, but beyond that, I dont understand it.
And having playing Dota since 2.0, then trying HoN and LoL... LoL was by far the least competitive one of them all... I dont understand how there are "pros" in this.
I understand the draw of Dota and its clones though, because its like an interesting mix between a MMO and RTS in my opinion.
Dota/LoL/Hon is like playing a mmorpg. Getting levels, getting gear, killing people. Its like any MMO with PvP but lvling/experiencing all content takes place in an hour. And its an RTS because it is about your strategies/positioning/control.
MEH IDK tho, to be honest I am just stoked for Dota 2, because DotA with updated graphics will easily stomp all over LoL and HoN, which are just imitations, but with better graphics/interface above Dota. Once DotA2 has these, these 2 games are going to disappear/cut DRASTICALLY in size/player base.
To be honest the only reason LoL picked up so much attention/so many players was because it was completely free.
I have friends who dont even know what Dota is, who play LoL because it was free, and saw the ad on facebook.
no it's not 1000x easier. why would it be?

Are games like Dota and LoL worth watching to casual viewers ?
Games like halo and sc2 have a kind of spectator appeal to them even if you do not play them.
Some games do not translate well over to a full on esport that can carry a solid viewership.

I have friends who dont even know what Dota is, who play LoL because it was free, and saw the ad on facebook. League of Legends has an extremely loyal following how else do you think they pull off such high viewership end of the day its all about popularity sc2 for example sc2 gains alot of popularity money follow more players follow skill level raises to keep up with compatition you could easily see this type of trend happen with LoLalso there is no Denying? so i dont see Dota/hon having such a unique jungle system there's alot of depth that LoL's jungle gives the game that you simply dont see with Dota/Hon people really dont take this into consideration
That's not necessary true. I mean, it could happen of course but there are fundamental differences between sc2 and lol. First of all, lol had its popularity based on the fact that it's free to play. Meaning part of the player base may not want to invest in competitive LoL (money into stream, time , travel to mlg, and so forth). Whereas sc2 players are more encline (overall) to do so, simply because they already did it by buying the game.
I'm pretty bad at expressing my argument, so maybe I did not chose the best words, but I think you got the idea. If the LoL fan base will just watch free stream, and not travel to mlg or other tournaments, nor be willing to send a little money to support their game on a more competitive level, the game will just not succeed as an e-sport.
Don't get me wrong, they could very well do it, and LoL will become huge in tournaments like MLG, but the f2p aspect of the game has an impact on the mindset of the player (at least when they start playing the game). And that's a huge difference between the sc2 and the lol players that could lead League of Legend to a different path that Starcrat 2 took.

League of legends sports a 180k viewership at this years Dreamhack im pretty sure that trumps any sc2 stream to date by far as far as daily streams LoL pulls just as much as sc2 if not more on own3d.tv

I look forward to watching this =)

I never understood what's happening with dota, lol, hon, ... I played these "three-lane-battle" maps in WC3 like forever and suddenly dota appears and everything is "hype hype hype" about it, even that it is a clone in itself! Maybe a clone that makes things better, but the original game idea is far from being invented by dota!
Also watching these games is horrible! Playtime under one hour is a surprise and there is happening like nothing interesting in nearly 80% of this time! And the interesting parts are so fast, that a normal viewer doesn't know what exactly happed there!
And now LoL at MLG... sorry, LoL is buying itself into tournaments for quite some time now! It is backed by so much money it is crazy and people just get dollar signs in their eyes!
But who am I to tell you anything, I still play Civilization 2 in my free time! So have fun with this, but accept that I will ignore this entirely!

I'd rather see DotA or HoN to be honest, as they have a lot more competitive nature as a game. LoL is like a super casual free version of DotA, but as long as it help e-sports then that's cool.

Nice! My second favorite game gets some more attention!

Halo Reach, Black Ops and now LoL, if it wasn't for Starcraft MLG would be a casual-fest. It kinda saddens me to see a growing "esports" company promoting games with such low skillgap, good marketing move though, the viewers will definitely be there.

Of course a StarCraft board will shit on this move. But in all honesty, LoL is fun to play, semi fun to watch, and overall a great viewer draw. The game still requires high level tactical and strategical decision making, which is the draw for me. Even if it is more of a game for casuals than anything, it's still a good competition at the high level because of how much positioning and timing matter. It's not a total scrub-fest, guys.

Just four teams for a shot at 20000 dollars!!! Jesus Christ, when i read stuff like this, and i think at the 5000 dollars given to SC2 pros, i understand why korean players have unions and collective bargains. SC2 players spend a small fortune just to go to MLG, and they bring the biggest audience, yet they have the smallest prize pool of the entire tournament...

When I heard of this, I hoped they would have taked out CoD :/
But I don't understand why MLG didnt wait a little bit longer to see what Dota2 would be like, the decision seems a bit rushed to me.
LoL is a fun game (played some games), but I have still some trouble taking it seriously as an Esport. Oh well, as long as they have sc2, everything is good.

This is pretty cool. I have been playing some LoL lately and I must say it is a fun game but I feel it is a game that seems more appealing for the casual gamers. Which is great for E-Sports in general to see a game like this go onto the competitive E-Sports scene and I really hope it continues to develop even after DOTA 2 comes out.

Whyyyyyyyyyy
I really can't stand DotA-games (MOBA is just a marketing term used by companies that make DotA-games but aren't associated with DotA, i.e. anybody but Blizz and Valve) and I also don't see any mass appeal in them.
Almost any PC FPS would've been better.

league of legends is more fun to play than sc2, but sc2 is a bit more fun to watch.
|
I played LoL when it came out, and it's pretty fun; I don't think it's a bad spectator sport, but I think DotA or HoN would have been better.

It's not a question of the gameplay, it's a question of the viewers and it's been seen that LoL tournaments attract a ridiculous number of viewers. It's sad though that LoL still doesn't have a proper observer mode and we'll probably still see the crappy 6 player obs mode. -_-

All I ever hear about lol is the Dreamhack tournament.
There've been a lot of high profile SC2 events since then in addition to the dozens of weekly/monthly money tournaments, but I hear nothing about lol except how big it was at Dreamhack.
I guess ESL and MLG will be the international lol tournament scene.
edit²: I think lol firmly falls into the "competitive games" portion of the industry along with Halo, FIFA, CoD, wow and Trackmania instead of the "e-sports" portion (BW, QL, SC2).

If you pick up this shit, you better pick up Guild Wars 2 when it comes out.
