For the longest time, I kept saying that I would play DotA 2 once it is released and stop playing LoL. DotA does indeed seem like it is the better game, but the reason I do not want to be part of DotA is because the community seems so unpleasant. Same reason I do not want anything to do with people who play Battlefield, Quake, Counter-Strike, Super Smash Bros Melee, Brood War (how did it come to this?!?!?!) and people who listen to rock and metal.
What is their problem? For one, they overuse the word skill and do not use the word to determine how much ability and technique it requires to perform a task, but rather, they use the word skill to see if you agree with their interest. And two, those communities seem to act like they are under attack and it is their duty to save the superior game.
btw, this is a pretty big generalization.

It may be hypocritical for me to say that DotA can be nasty given how cruel LoL players can be, but I guess it is related how people seem to view themselves for playing the game rather than how well someone views themselves for being good at the game.

Your post is a lot more hypocritical than you think. You essentially just did exactly what 'all those other games' communities' do. Of course people defend things they enjoy, that goes far beyond gaming. FWIW I don't think people use the word skill the way you insinuate anyway.

Nidalee free week.
Also, Skarner's free instead of Garen.

Why "instead"? It's been 2 weeks since the release of skarner so he is supposed to be free this rotation...

The original post mistakenly had Garen as being free instead of Skarner. It has since been corrected, obviously.

That is somewhat true. I don't really hear the term "skill" from even some of the best players in this game.

Who should win in solo top, Garen or Rumble?

I'm pretty sure Garen would win v. almost every non-Jax/Udyr melee champ but I could be wrong.

I was thinking about switching to dota, too. my big problem is that when people talk about differences they talk about small (although important) stuff like denying, bigger mana costs, longer stuns, etc. macro is the most interesting part of LoL to me, but i'm only now realizing how basic it is, and how little people pay attention to it, even in high level play; for instance, EU teams sacrificing two of their turrets for dragon, or NA teams simply ignoring dragon early on. from the little i've played, it seems like the big difference between dota and LoL is:

laning in dota uses far fewer skills and is mostly about harassing, last hitting and denying
laning in LoL is more dynamic because mana costs are lower and people get items for health and mana regen, so there is more ability usage and essentially more interesting laning.

macro level play in dota is very interesting, involves anything from a 2v2 to 2v4 to 3v3 unless both sides are playing passive as in gamescom. these fights are faster, larger scale and there are many more of these skirmishes overall--this is because of bigger stuns and mana costs and such
macro level play in LoL is basically entirely about positioning because there is no TP scroll, so you can backdoor while the other team gets dragon or baron while the other team backdoors and the other team has to sacrifice a summoners spell just to be able to stop you once every 4 minutes. the problem is that, because of this lack of mobility, LoL teams always bring all 5 people into fights that they want to win (i.e. not a defensive fight) so they don't get picked off alone. so high level play is essentially decided by one or two big fat 5v5 teamfights after a long laning phase, and whoever loses the fight suffers a huge blow to their confidence that is very difficult to overcome. also, riot wants to change this and will probably have a hard time doing so because very few of their intentions in balance changes actually accomplish their goals, so we will be seeing more boring macro gameplay for a while

is this correct?

Garen should beat Udyr as well, IMO. He has superior level 1 burst (Garen's Q resets the autoattack timer, has a higher AD ratio, and the silence disrupts Udyr's ability to abuse his double-stance bug), and his burst at 2 and 3 forces Udyr to cede his ability to lasthit, as Udyr's Turtle Stance will not yet be strong enough to withstand that burst, and Udyr has no ranged abilities. By the time Udyr has enough sustain to hold out against Garen, he will be too far behind.

Meh, neither Akali, Mantheon nor Irelia free to play this week. Meanwhile, several Champs like Urgot, Ryze, Ashe, Sivir, Zilean and Veigar have been free two or more times since the last time one of those were free. DEM GOOD DECISIONS RIOT.

DX I hear it all the time when talking about other games. For example, "Call of Duty is horrible because it requires no skill" or "Pop music is terrible because it requires no skill to look good and get autotuned."

Ashe and Sivir are like free every other week. No point buying them. Riot enjoys having the same champs on rotation, while neglecting certain champs for ages. For example, I don't even recall the last time Trundle's been free aside from that one time he was a few weeks back.

This week is bonus special - the only 4800 or 6300 is Skarner, and 3 of them are champions who have had price drops.

This right here pretty much shows HOW biased Riot is about having certain champs in that rotation regularly.

Last week we had:
Since 4 rotations we've had 40 distinct champs (not even 1 repetition).
Since 6 rotations we've had 52 distinct champs. (7 - 55, 8 - 60)

58 Annie, Blitzcrank, Caitlyn, Lux, Kog'Maw, Maokai, Master Yi, Morgana, Rammus, Warwick
57 Ashe, Brand, Dr. Mundo, Galio, Gangplank, Janna, Kassadin, Malphite, Sivir, Wukong
56 Amumu, Corki, Heimerdinger, Jax, Miss Fortune, Nasus, Ryze, Singed, Taric, Trundle

And now we have:
Since 4 rotations we've had 39 distinct champs (just 1 repetition - Shen).
Since 6 rotations we've had 49 distinct champs. (7 - 55, 8 - 58)
And we have 2 champs that were unavailable for far too long (Nida - week 39, Gragas - week 33)
So those rotations are quite solid for smb who wants to try many champs.
And at the same time they provide good selection for new players.
