Spellvamp on burst casters seems kinda useless because you will retreat after you threw out your spells.

Spellvamp on champs like Vlad sounds decent.

Upon further inspection, the only champions I can think of for whom 20 -MR is better than 30 AP / 15% spell vamp are Xin (.4 best AP ratio, 1 magic ability) and Garen (no AP ratios, 1 magic ability that deals partial true damage). Most AD champions have surprisingly good AP ratios on their spellpower abilities:

Alistar: 1 Q , 1 W, .4 E
Blitzcrank: 1 Q, 1 R
Gangplank: 1 W, .2 AoE R
Irelia: 1 Q, 1 E
Kat: .75 AP E, .3 R if AP
Kog: .7 Q, .01 W, .7 E, .3 R
Malphite: .7 W, 1 R
Master Yi: 1 Q, 1.65 W
Miss Fortune: .8 E, .2 R if built AP
Pantheon: 1 W, 1 R
Shen: .65 Q, .6 W, 1 R
Tryndamere: 1.5 Q, 1 E
Warwick: 1 Q

Notable exclusions are Mundo, Nasus and Olaf, all of which would benefit significantly from vamp on 1 or more abilities. I don't count Jax, Kayle, Sion or TF because they either build both or are built straight AP.

It's actually pretty surprising thinking about how many melee champions would gain health in teamfights from spell vamp.

Well, my thing is that it's a pretty absurd amount of AP for such a low cost even just to yourself and the parts are really easy to build--I mean, just buy 3 tomes. It combines very well with other items like Zhonya's and if you were really a baller you'd have a teammate who got scepter anyway .

Yeah I was looking at it as itself as well, but what I definitely realized is that unless you have a specific need for the MRes reduction (or you don't have an inventory slot for it), Negatron + Will of the Ancients is going to be a better tankiness/aura combo. I tried it in a game I was winning earlier and the spell vamp may or may not have saved our Pantheon's life several times, so there's that! I think Will actually might be a real choice if you're with champions that have good spellvamp synergy.

Ok, so Will of the Ancients is AWESOME on Cho lol.

I went Ring->boots->WotA->merc->Zhonyas->Aegis->Abyssal->Randuins and if I hit anyone with anything I would heal like 1000 hp lololol.

Spell Vamp only triggers off magic damage from spells (according to some wiki at least). So spells that deal physical damage (including Panth's spear) should not give you any heal.

Tested it in a practice game with Ashe's Volley and Hextech Revolver. Definitely got some vamp from it. I didn't get any +HP popups over my head but I got about +40 HP per Volley on a creep wave.

Akali's E does Physical Damage but most definitely benefits from Spell Vamp.

I've been learning how to jungle and play Amumu as my first tank & jungler. On that note, I haven't done that bad thanks to basic guides out there and the ones here covering jungling a bit more. I have a few big questions though.

1. Do all of Amumu's abilities apply his passive debuff to lower magic resist? The following guide suggests that it would but I wanted to check. http://www.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=171349

2. In the above guide is mention they say, "Not only does it eliminate the need to buy MRPen, it can bring their MR into the negatives (that means bonus magic damage)." I was completely unaware that magic penetration could work like this as I'm honestly somewhat a noob as to overall LoL game knowledge. Could someone please tell me the numbers involved with MR/MP or link me to somewhere with them?

3. Yesterday, I started the night with one of the worst games I've played in a long time and my worst game on Amumu yet... I had accidentally started a pot half way through another pot and then when I was walking up to red buff I accidentally finger slipped again, activated despair, and aggrod them before I had regen anything. I ran and let myself regen up. At this point I should have sucked it up and went back but I decided to try to pull off getting red buff anyway and ended up getting my last bit of HP nuked down before I could run. TLDR I was a noob and died during my first pathing. Knowing what I should have done was a lot easier at this point than knowing what I should do from there on. No one was in a position for me to be able to set up a gank to get back ahead and without blue buff my ability to jungle felt almost nill. What IS the best course of action once I've decided to be a baddy and completely fuck myself??

Tested (see above), and you're right.

From now on I sooo want someone to buy a Will of the Ancients when I play Ashe. Since I am doing the Volley spam GB/B build I don't have any significant lifesteal. Getting my allies to build both Will and Starks would be double the awesomeness.

Magic penetration can't bring MR into negatives. Magic resist reduction (which is what Cursed Touch is) can bring MR to negatives. Reduction always applies before penetration though.

Does reduction apply after % penetration or before?

Also on another topic.

I've been trying to play Ashe lately and she just feels like an awful champ early game to me. She does so little damage it feels like she hardly puts up a fight against other solo mids such as MF, Kog, Tristana, and TF.

It feels like for a large part of the game her only purpose is to infinitely slow people, and initiate and scout, until the point where she starts critting for massive damage.

I'm guessing that her purpose in solo is just to farm every single minion possible to get uber farmed?

On yet another note. Now that Kog's barrage properly does magic damage, what runes are best on him? I used to go health quints plus all attack speed.

But I don't know if he'd be better off with magic pen runes, or armor pen, or what.

Reduction is something that is on as long as the buff/debuff is up.

so it is always first.

spellvamp is unreal on vladimir. if you don't burst him down immediately you literally can't kill him because his Q is such a low cooldown and he regens INSANE hp on it, not to mention his E and his pool are both huge too

I've been picking up hextech revolver as a midrange item on vlad since I'm frankly dissatisfied with rushing rylai's, zhonya's or void staff and guise is trash. Works well, item is totally underrated.

Truth is there aren't really many good spellcaster items, you have to work with what you can get.

Tried it on kassadin a couple times, but the ring nerfs are smaller than I expected so I'll just keep stacking those. I'm never gonna be a convert to catalyst first on him.

Buy up mana pots and do small camps or lane until blue buff is back up. As a general rule on Amumu, use Despair on creeps with higher amounts of life and Tantrum on lower life creeps when you are low on mana with blue or jungling without blue buff.
