dorans ring as mentioned super efficient on heimer because he needs the mregen 100% AP = stronger pokes and HP = same shit as cata, make harder to kill and combined with his passive good lanestaying power
basically, even if u started with a mana crystal it takes u 900 more gold ish to get catalyst
if u start dorans ring it takes u 785 more gold to get dorans ring + 1 more boots
and honestly dorans ring is so awesome that most ppl open dorans and then get catalyst anyhow
so say dorans ring -> cata + boots opening
u could get dorans ring -> doran's ring + sorc boots
your damage is a lot stronger in lane, so basically cata opening gives u slightly more health and lanestaying power while the second gets you much more damage in lane and less survivability. the power of heimer is generally doing so much damage to your opponent that you can either kill them or force them b, and then proceed to wipe a wave and push it to their tower and either push the tower and b and they are a wave behind when they get back to lane, leading to them losing cs quickly.
cata heimer would be more likely to result in a stalemate against another strong laner, while the dorans + sorcs would be more likely to outright win the lane.

For me, the thing about Cata is that the mana proc just isn't as good on Heimer as it is on other casters. 250 mana on level-up for Kassadin, Anivia or Annie lets you be a huge dick to the guy across from you in lane, because there's a huge difference between Qing them when mana allows, and Qing them whenever the hell you want. As Heimer, it doesn't really do that--you get one extra turret (which you really shouldn't need), and it usually won't translate into extra Rockets, because you're still limited by looking for windows when your lane opponent is among the closest 3 Rocket targets.

i mean take a look at the 1200-1400 range (which i consider to be elo hell). your team captain may have only 4 games under his belt (3 of which he fed like crazy, one of which he played tank teemo cause he thinks it's the best build), but since riot uses the retarded skipping stone method with HUGE elo boosts when you start playing, he's like 1460 elo. meanwhile i worked my way up from the 700 elo level and have hundreds of games but since i've been fucked in recent games i'm only at 1300. this player thinks that numbers mean everything and so when i tell him not to go to lane with sapphire crystal when his teemo only has 420 HP, he tells me "stfu noob i'm team captain you are noob you took smite on WW." i look at our other lanes, annie with sapphire crystal, ezrael with vamp scepter, shen with ruby gem. WOW REAL STRONG EARLY GAME WE GOT HERE. of course annie and ezrael give double first blood before i even finish blue buff. this game is over. was any part of it my fault? absolutely not. these games happen a lot more than they should at this level
A) Tank Teemo is OP as fuck
B) I do think you are as good as me at things like laning and teamfights (I'm not amazing at either) but I think my understanding of the strategy and positioning might be higher. As far as "skill" goes you're just as skilled as me. Skill isn't what separates good players from bad players, understanding is. Skill is what separates good from GREAT players.
C) You can totally get to at least 1600. Just kick it into gear.
But ya when people say stuff like "I'm stuck in Elo hell" I don't blame them, I just think they're seriously overestimating the skill of the people they play against. Just fucking 1v5 them.

Yeah, I mean that's fair enough. Personally I don't mind having to switch it up - I still get frustrated as fuck when there's games where I am carrying hard but we still go down, but stuff like that is always gonna happen.
I gotta say though, learning a ranged AD carry is a really fun experience. I find it much easier to 'carry' a game as one as opposed to any other role. I still like to play Shen, but I don't plan on doing it in solo Q until I've reached a level where I'm comfortable relying on someone else to do the damage.
That being said, now that I'm more comfortable with solo Q in general (and am more familiar with the carrying mindset) I might start trying out Shen again - I've heard lots of people say he's actually great for 'carrying' a team.

Shen is good in solo que because he lets you be where the fight is, and prevent the morons on your team from engaging in a 4v5. Actually, now that I think about it, I tend to win when I play tanks, for the simple reason that being hard to kill and having the ability to force fights means that unless your team is REALLY stupid, you can prevent them from starting bad fights.

I agree with the saving stuff and all that. But when I play Shen it feels to me like the team never does any damage... In teamfights I'll be keeping people off of our carries, or keeping theirs from getting damage in, but it always feels the same way. I haven't played too many ranked solo q with Shen, so it could just be bad luck, but the times that I played him I didn't so much feel like I was 'carrying' as much as every second was a desperate struggle to counteract my team's mistakes.
I might try him when I've worked on my ult timings a bit more... I've had trouble in solo q using it to get kills rather than just saving people.I think it's a combination of flawed ult timing on my behalf, and the player I'm ulting being too retarded to realise what's going on, and stick around for the kill.
