This sounds insane but... pings do alright for goal communication already and could be expanded further. Why do it? To eliminate toxicity that might turn people off to the game. I mostly have been thinking about since an experience last night: with the recent new character rotation, I played Muradin for the first time to complete his easiest quest in a Versus match. The inexperience combined with being only an average gamer meant I didn't play that well. Not terrible: I did participate in fights/objectives (our team got the Dragon twice as often as our opponent), didn't just die often/feed, etc. I just didn't use my skills well initially which lead to one player spouting several sentences about how bad I was and how he couldn't believe how horrible it was to have been paired up with me (in more insulting language than this). In the end, we won the game without any damage to our nexus (or it wasn't by some miracle). In other words: it wasn't even some player venting cause he was stuck in a hopeless battle that we were sure to lose. I'm used to the toxicity of the MOBA community but even still it did invoke an emotional reaction of feeling less than pleasant after the game. Someone more "casual" (I likely need a better word) may be less used to dealing with and shrugging off the pointless negativity. As such, it could turn them off to the game as it wouldn't be causing them relaxing/fun feelings which I believe is this MOBA's goal. Hearthstone has shown a lack of chat in a game can work. Of course, I'd leave the general chat alone so that people can still communicate / find groups / etc prior to being in a match. And actual teams would use some type of voice chat over typing in the game. Basically: just wondering if in-game chat is actually needed for the MOBA or if it is instead more of a liability knowing how the general community tends to treat less experienced players that Heroes of the Storm is trying to attract? just wow

I think a solution to the toxicity in chatting would be to allow hero voice chat (like 'thankyou,' missing X, etc), muting options, a jail system for people that are toxic... For example, someone is reported for harassment and technical support confirms it, he/she is banned from chatting for "x" amount of games but can still effectively communicate using built in hero voice chat. I think all-chat is also something that needs to be in the game. It gives people ways to ask people, joke around, trash talk, etc. All-chat should be an unlock-able at a certain level, say until you unlock ranked play (lvl 30?) and by default it should be off because it is a big outlet for toxicity. I think this way will allow new players to experience less toxicity but also have the freedom to communicate how they want to communicate later on when things matter.

Negative feedback is a fact of life, and Toxicity is just a buzzword popularized by Riot that really boils down to "things i don't like"

The obvious solution is to remove that function too, but then people will just find another way to express their mean feelings. I think what we are gonna have to do is to separate all players onto different servers so no offending data can be communicated. spam can be managed with some function that locks the player out for a certain period of time. in dota 2, they already have something similar to what you mentioned about different servers by having you go through low priority queue for a period of time before you can queue up normally again.

In general i dont see how chat is a problem as long as you can mute ppl. If you feel like no chat just mute everyone at the start of the game and there will be no chat, whats the problem? i dont see it really... If you want to chat - go chat, if you dont want to chat and to hear anyone - go mute. easy life

They should have an option to disable all chat and let everyone decide on their own if they want to partake in trash talking or not. They should also have a robust muting and reporting system so you have the power to not interact with jerks. Power to the people.

The famous degree to which MOBA players are needlessly insulting of others is a major turn off to the genre for lots of folks. It's not a matter of being thin-skinned... It's a matter of trying to play a game and have fun, when some idiot child wants to rag on you or one of your teammates for no particularly good reason. Real life has enough of that nonsense; games should bring a respite from it.
