Hi, a completely new player here. I have played a bit of hearthstone and magic before so I have a clue of how things are ran and I think I have some of the basics of the game down. I've got the cards that unlock for the solo mode for couple classes and been playing some ranked with a warlock custom deck I've made (don't have nearly enough cards to make any of the decks).
Where should I go from here to get a more complete card collection and get better at the game?
|
Arena is the default answer to that question. You'll want to get familiar with all the cards but if you have solid enough fundamentals you can progress with your collection quickly while not being limited by your current collection. Watch some arena streamers etc.

Hopefully I can rise a bit more before having to put money in so I can play arena.
EDIT: Which packs should I get with the gold or should I be saving them up for something?
|
I believe it still holds true that classic packs are the best packs to buy for beginners, so I'd go with those. However the first expansion, Curse of Naxxramas, also has a lot of pretty essential cards that are still used in many competitive decks and you get them guaranteed by completing the adventure's sections. I forget in which wings you earn them but Loatheb, Mad Scientist, Sludge Belcher, Webspinner, Voidcaller, Haunted Creeper, Nerubian Egg and I'm sure some others I'm forgetting are all great to have.
|
Death's Bite, Dark Cultist and Zombie Chow too! Point is it's a set packed full of useful cards. Even Stalagg and Feugen see play in specific decks (Reno).
|
If I had to do it starting over I would get to a place where I'm winning at least 3 games an arena run (if this isn't happening, I'd review my card picks as well as practice games for familiarity and fundamentals), saving my gold to unlock all the expansions. Complete tavern brawl for pack each week. With spare dust from those packs I'd consider crafting an epic or two for a deck I find interesting and fun for ranked play.
|
Oh I see you can buy expansions with gold. Silly me XD. I've 20 gold now. but I got to rank 20 on a 5 game streak. Been playing a custom hunter deck with tons of beasts cards
Should I start over and make a new ID or just keep playing ranked until I hit a wall?
|
There's no reason to restart. I would merely change my focus to arena when comfortable. Rank 20 is a good first step. Maybe look for some articles and "free" or budget decks and see if you can get to Rank 15 then dive into arena (stockpile some gold in case the first few don't go so well) You only need to make 50g for it to be the same as if you had just bought the pack, which is usually around the 3 win mark iirc.
Getting to rank 20 is something you should be doing at least for the end of season rewards. You probably don't care about the back but the dust and free common (for rank 20-16) are at least contributing to your collection for essentially "free" since you get it just for playing. Getting to rank 15 would be a great monthly goal as you would then get a common and a rare. reference

Is Arena the best way to farm up enough gold to get an expansion? Sorry but what are dusts and card backs?
What do you think about my current hunter deck? 2- Hunter's Mark 2-Tracking 2-Stonetusk Boar 2 Timber Wolf 1 Call Pet 2 Bloodfen Raptor 2 River Crocolisk 2 Scavenging Hyena 2 Animal Companion 2 Kill Command 1 Emperor Cobra 2 Ironfur Grizzly 2 Razorfen Hunter 2 Silverback Patriarch 2 Houndmaster 2 Starving Buzzard
EDIT: can you guys suggest some free decks for me to try to rise with? I've been looking but most of them are very lackluster. Thank you in advance.

Arena is the best way to get packs so that you can build a better deck, and get some extra gold and dust on the side. In It also gives you some experience with other cards that you may not have. It is not the way to save up gold for an expansion though.
To get enough gold to get an expansion, you earn gold by doing quests. Playing on unranked still counts for quests, so you can earn around 40-100 gold per daily quest, plus an extra 10 for every 3 wins. One wing of an expansion costs 700 gold. I recommend going through Naxxramas first.
In the Collection screen, you can see all of your cards. You can also craft cards you don't have using dust, which is the blue bottle in the bottom right where the gold would be. You get dust from duplicates in packs that you otherwise couldn't use, and optionally from destroying cards you don't want. I would suggest avoid crafting or dusting cards for now. The very right top tab shows what card backs you have, they are cosmetic only.
Another thing is that you get a card pack for winning one game in the Tavern Brawl every week.
Edit: I just googled "basic hunter deck" and clicked on the first result. It seems good enough.
2x Hunter's Mark 2x Arcane Shot 1x Tracking 2x Animal Companion 2x Kill Command 2x Multi-Shot 2x Houndmaster 1x Stonetusk Boar 1x Acidic Swamp Ooze 2x Bloodfen Raptor 2x River Crocolisk 2x Ironfur Grizzly 1x Razorfen Hunter 1x Shattered Sun Cleric 1x Chillwind Yeti 1x Oasis Snapjaw 2x Frostwolf Warlord 2x Boulderfist Ogre 1x Stormwind Champion

if I reach rank 5 within a season, but fall back and will be rank 7 at the end of the season, would I get the rank5 or rank7 reward?
|
|
This is correct, no need to test. Your ranked reward chest is for your highest rank in that season.
You can check which reward you'll get in the quests tab. Under ranked mode in the top left it will show your current rank, and the rank of the chest you're currently set to receive.

I seem to hit a wall at 16 ranked. Going with 21/30 Face Hunter deck with pretty suitable replacements (almost none from free outside the build). w/ out Mad scientist, quick shot and haunted creepers are my main problems building the full deck Mana distribution is very similar to the modern deck.
Arena matches have been bit uneven, Got 4,7,1 (Rogue deck that I thought was pretty solid but get rekt) How far do you think I can get my current deck in ranked?
|
7 wins is awesome in arena!!! you got a free run!
Rank 15 is where things start to get really tough. You will run into some players who have been playing for many months and have a strong understanding of the game. There are a few days left, so just keep playing your deck and see if you can hit 15. Then next week, when the ladder resets, you will start out playing against against the top of the heap again as they start to rank back up, so you will be in for a completely different (and probably frustrating) experience.
Keep going for arena wins 3+ and you are getting valuable practice and a pack, which is a win-win!

is it best to always clear the board vs. secret paladin? or whats the best way to counter? I mean you could also not kill anything of him to not trigger secrets like Avenge or Repentance
so whats the best?

You have to play it carefully. Try to clear only when you can get good value on your trade, and when you can deal with an Avenge trigger. Other than that, you want to clear as much as possible before he plays 6 or there will be too much for you to handle.
|
alright I'm gonna try to clear. haha but I just noticed one shouldn't clear vs. Piloted Shredder if not necessary.. my opponent had it ressurected by Repetencance oh damn :D
btw new question: if I squelch my opponents, will they be squelched forever or only until the match is over?
|
Repentance do something else. It makes health of your minion you just played redcued to one. Kinda handy if you play vs turn 4 Ancient of War from Unstable Portal.
Piloted Shredder was ressurected by Redemption.
about squelch I just don't know, If you are bothered to much by emotes just do the classic Reynad's turn one play = squelch your opponent.

Can someone give me some feedback on my deck? What I have of the Face Hunter deck. 1- Hunter's Mark 1- Tracking 2- Abusive Sergeant 2- Leper Gnome 1- Glaivezooka 1- Bear Trap 1- Explosive Trap 1- Snipe 1- Dire Wolf Alpha 2- Ironbeak Owl 1- Freezing Trap 2- Knife Juggler 2- Murloc Tidehunter 2- Animal Companion 2- Kill Command 2- Unleash the Hounds 2- Argent Horserider 2- Eaglehorn Bow 2- Wolfrider At Ranked 15 with the deck. Trying to think of what I should dust next to make a stronger Face Hunter. I was thinking 2 Arcane Golems to replace Razorfen Hunter with the next dusts and save gold for the Quick Shot expansion.
Just a new player trying to build a competitive deck. Seeking advice.
