lightroom is a great tool, aperture too (if you're on a mac), but when it comes to photoshop, id stick with cs2. ive used all three, and they just keep getting clunkier. They removed stuff in cs4 (like extract WTF) because they've added new tools to make up for them, but the new tools are more complicated and less efficient imho.

stick with cs2.

Not too much has changed for me in the newer versions, just that stuff gets moved around and you have to relearn how the new menus work. CS2 if you already have it. Plus the CS2 desktop icon is the best in Photoshop's full history

CS3 introduced smart filters which are quite useful in some cases... plus the interface is in my opinion much improved. It also has much better RAW support. Adobe Bridge is pretty awesome too from that version on.

CS4 adds some tools for working with 3d, has a 64 bit version (that's unstable as hell, i never use it) and some rather minor (and a bit questionable) interface tweaks. Oh, it also has seam carving (content aware resizing), i never use that though.

I stick with CS2. Really solid, better than CS3 and CS4 imo.

Yep.

Pretty much what everyone has been saying, although I wouldn't change CS3 for anything. It's so full of nice features, and in CS4 they took out some of those.

So yes, go for CS3

You can even get a decent sized portable of it :D

photoshop 5.0 user right here! ;P

But I do also use CS4 because of my school, but for photos cs2 is enough. If you already know how to work around cs2, just stick to it.
