Likes: Intelligent people that are willing to and be able to debate. One good thing about America is that people love to argue about crap. The thing is, unfortunately, a lot of people can't argue. SomeMost overly religious conservatives don't know how to justify some of their beliefs apart from the Bible (not even philosophers), and some most left-wing progressives don't know how to justify their points apart from crappy anedcotal evidence and disproven dialectic. Still, it's better than not being able to argue at all.
Dislikes: The Democrat and Republican Parties. Anybody that is a member of the Democrat and Republican Parties that also isn't ostracized. Idiots. (may be redundant). Anything that is a product of the Democrat or Republican Party, or both.

Germany (subjective view ofc)
Likes:
- our culture with great thinkers and artists such as Kant, Hegel, Lessing, Nietzsche, Marx, Goethe, Schiller, Bach, Beethoven... just to name a few. Without wanting to sound arrogant: We have advanced thinking and intellectual values of western societies considerably. - our landscape and architecture. There are so many neat places in Germany to visit (though the north, where I live, is probably least remarkable apart from the Hanseatic Cities) with beautiful old romanesque and gothic buildings or the half-timbered houses - especially in Southern Germany.. no wonder the J-tourists come here in the masses.
- our myths such as the Nibelungenlied with Siegfried the dragon-slayer :D ~ epic
- I tend to think we are an open-minded nation towards other cultures (+ Show Spoiler +This may come partly from our inheritance as those responsible for WWII => fundamental rethinking. ). Also topics such as sexuality are viewed very relaxedly here which I appreciate. Oh, and drinking age 16 - yay!
- Diversity. Being in South Germany and being in Northern Germany near the coast are two totally different things. (though that could be said for most countries I guess)
- ... and diversity as well as far as other countries are concerned. We are at the heart of Western Europe and neighboring to (or "in reach of") many interesting countries: Scandinavia in the North, Italy in the South, Poland / Czech Republic in the East and Netherlands, Belgium, France, GB in the West... great for culture tours
Dislikes:
- strong hierarchy in many things. For example the school system which separates the children at young age who then go to "Hauptschule" (very slim chances of finding a job; "losers" of the education system), "Realschule" (better chances but nowadays also pretty crappy) and "Gymnasium" (prerequisite for Universtiy entrance; "winners" of the education system) + Show Spoiler +this leads to a lot of dissatisfaction and a clear distinction between social classes => could be better as one can see in Scandinavia where they have comprehensive schools and still own us in PISA... but who wants his children to go to school with the scum?...
- (this is my absolutely personal point and I'm not open to discussion as OP said this shouldn't be political - could as well put it in spoiler, if you wanna argue => pm) + Show Spoiler +I HATE the attitude of many Germans who feel such an immense guilt because of what happened in the Third Reich though they were born either afterwards or were still very little kids at that time. Nobody who lives today and is not 90 years old is responsible for what happened back then but that feeling of guilt is so inoculated into our brains that we still have the urge to grovel when we see a Jew. As a politician you are of course expected to express regret and grief, that's ok, you represent the nation, but why should an individual German citizen feel guilty for what happened? There is no such thing as a "Nazi-gene".

Likes - the facility with which Extremely strong bonds are made
- public transportation in Lisbon and Porto ( especially the Subway in Lisbon it tops every other countries I and my brother have been to. total 75 countries together, 70 are his XD)
- the serenity and natural beauty outside the major cities - secluded warm water beaches - Beautiful architecture - The language is one of the most complex and beautiful - Fado - exceedingly rich culturally - that at the age of 14 you can go clubbing - that alcohol and light drugs are cheap
- their take on hip hop, it is honestly exceptional, better than every other European country( maybe with the exception of Germany, i don't understand german) and only a handful of American MCs will ever compare to the best Portuguese which coincidentally are a handful, in Portugal hip hop has existed for only 19 years and total population is 11million/
- the intensity with which emotions are portrayed and felt especially "Saudade" missing someone or Homesickness are the closest translations, but they don't come close to it's full meaning.
- how advanced they are in terms of human rights
Dislikes - Ample poverty - the abundant ignorance - Low quality of material life all around - Extreme arrogance - Xenophobia galore, even against people of different regions in this small ass country - corruption - Male chauvinism - Political positions are held with too high of an esteem - the school system ( it REALLY fails) - did i mention the school system there fails really bad? - their tendency towards violence - depression is very common
I'm sure I'll think of more things i dislike later ^ ^ I have to ask this since it is my dream to one day live in Portugal. I have read that the cost of living etc, is slowly on the rise with the EU etc. But is it that bad all around right now? Is Lisbon an affordable place to live? Should I learn Spanish first then Portuguese, is it that complex? you intend to move from the US to Portugal? you have family there? do you have guaranteed income? the cost of living in Lisbon is pretty high, though it depends on the areas, some areas are insanely high, and Lisbon has it's ghettos soo... yeah pick and choose. Lisbon is a unique and gorgeous city. Portugal has some rural areas, that are breathtakingly beautiful and dirt cheap, even right next to the beach no don't learn Spanish then Portuguese, its honestly a waste of time. being able to communicate basically in Portuguese is easy, but an American accent will get you ridiculed. Learning the language enough to appreciate it's beauty and complexity takes at least about 8 months - a year, if your intelligent and have a facility with languages, and takes 1.5-3 years to be able to implement it in it's full glory. edit: also sorry to start a bit of a flame war, but saying London has great architecture is laughable, also their food blows. The rest is true though London is awesome, and the British are fun as hell, and they have that sexy accent i love so much. I can't stand the city/place I live in and I have been wanting to go to/live in Portugal just because I think it the most amazing country in Europe. Rich history, culture, and absolute beauty. After a few years I hope, providing nothing is holding me back, I want to move there and from there see the world one country at a time. http://www.memphis.edu/ugcatalog/coursedescrip/cas/span.phphttp://www.memphis.edu/ugcatalog/coursedescrip/cas/port.phpReason I asked if I should know Spanish before Portuguese.
do you plan on getting a job in Portugal?
the economy there is shit, everything is as expensive as any other 1st world country in europe, but you get paid shit salaries, so quality of material life plummets. If you have a house there or some money to get a house and all you have to do is pay utilities then your good, but if your going to pay rent ... well please do yourself a favor and don't go.
average salary is 600 euros. rent will go for 200-300 for a place in Lisbon. utilities usually included, net is not an utility, although internet access in Portugal is pretty cheap, and fast.
The entire country oozes culture, many houses and structures are hundreds of years old, although some areas of Lisbon, and Porto boast some of the finest modern architecture. + Show Spoiler [Casa Da musica, Porto] + + Show Spoiler [Pavilion EXPO Lisboa] +
basically if you have money, great. If not then don't expect to live expensively, if you want to enjoy a simple life at the beach, the plains, or a poetic life in the metropolis it is possible, but it will not come easy.
Honestly although the grammatical standings of both languages carry a resemblance of one another, they are very different and if you learn Spanish you will only have the advantage of having some Latin common ground, which although valuable, it's not worth your time, it is much easier to go directly into Portuguese, and i get the distinct feeling that Portuguese class is taught by a Brazilian teacher, and although it is the same written language( although both cultures uses a different tense I.E passive voice vs active. not the these exactly but this is the general idea ) it differs GREATLY.
in fact Portuguese from the, north, the center, the rural areas, and the islands differ quite surprisingly, to the point where one cannot understand the other without some practice. most notability, the continental Portuguese have a hard time understanding islanders
it all depends on what you want from Portugal
edit: to Ghardo + Show Spoiler + most European countries have contributed GREATLY to the world, oh and thanks Aristides de Sousa Mendes for saving over 30k Jews from Germany in WWII ( sadly against the will of the Portuguese, catholics hate jews too...) Sorry i had to make a nazi joke. I agree wholeheartedly how unfair it is to German citizens to carry this weight, the Germans i have met, are usually intelligent, reserved individuals who are ashamed of this subject, whilst cultures ignore or revel in their passed atrocities. *cough* Japan *cough* England *cough* Portugal

Like: Liberalism. We don't have gripes with gays, enthnic minorities, religion, drugs, alcohol and everyone gets to have an opinion. Dislike: Liberalism. Freedom of speech is like sacred here but most people are fkn retards. Everything is pretty much allowed since we don't want people to be offended but this is sometimes done so blindly, it's just insane
Dislike: Nationalism. I don't see a way of being proud of my country, we have a history of slavery and our legacies to the world will be clogs, tulips, windmills, cheese, weed and klapschaatsen. Our folklore sucks (what happened to good old quartering) and we dont have any famous nature to speak of Like: Gelderland, the province I grew up in basically has no history (no major cities) but it has some tales of war and legendes from the middle ages and whatnot. Also it has the best nature (imo) of all of Holland.
Like: Culture. Our liberalism has led the music industry to be very diverse and high-quality. I'm into metal myself and I think we have some great bands in that genre. Dislike: Culture. Our literature is really horrible and our movies suck the Hollywood cock only to end up with a prickly feeling in the eyes.
Dislike: Monarchy. William of Orange was a badass, he freed us from the Spaniards etc. But now his great great great etc daughter is queen and monarchy really is a system that is ready to be replaced.

Switzerland:
Like: Clean, I notice differences wherever else I am (I wasn't at that many places outside Europe to be honest), French and Italian Cities often "smell" and also look like it as soon as you leave the tourist "hotspots". German cities seem to be better in this regard (at least Hamburg, I don't know any of the other big ones).
Safety: Go wherever whenever you want, sure there are some places where you have to care a little more but there is really no place I am afraid off. Our politicians can roam freely, for instance Zurich's major uses the public transport like everyone else. I never saw someone carry a gun except: policemen, soldiers, hunters or sport shooters (which to 99% are former soldiers and often also hunters...).
Public Transport and Highways/Roads. I live in a village with 2000 inhabitants. We lack a train station but just to explain how close everything is: I'm in Basel or Zürich in under 1 hour (Zurich is more like 40 minutes). I'm in Zug, Bern or Lucerne in about 1 hour (a little less for Zug and Lucerne, a little more for Bern). I'm in the alps in about 1 hour 30 minutes (up to 3-4 hours depending on *where* exactly). In 1 hour 20 minutes I'm in Interlaken which looks like a damn postcard :p.
Political system: We got 4 big political parties and 2-3 other a little smaller ones which all *reign* our country together. There is no coalition or a clear majorities in our 2 political chambers and the parties are to diverse to truly work in every aspect together anyway. Strong direct democracy on all levels (state, canton, town/village), seriously it's damn near to the point of getting annoying to vote for all the important and very often not so important stuff ^^.
Education system: Our public universities/schools are pretty good and actually *better* than most of the private ones (here). Studying is also pretty cheap (compared to say the US or Britain). I just checked it: Studying at the ETH Zurich (27 best university in 2005 worldwide on some random Google page I just found :p) costs you about 650 Swiss-Franks per semester which is ~$450.00 whiteout Books and other stuff you need.
Night live... Well, it's not the best around but Zürich/Basel offer everything I could ask for (well Hamburg is 10x times better, but Hamburg is just pure awesome :p), at least our clubs have open at least until 4 a.m., many go on 6+ a.m. (sometimes longer) unlike in Ireland where everything is closing at around 2.30? There are clubs for all sorts of music so... If you know the cities there is something for every taste... Oh, and we don't overdress us when we go out... I never was in a club were some guy actually watched closely what someone is wearing and the ones that do it are most of the times not very *hard* (if your stuff is clean and you don't look like a homeless you can go nearly everywhere ).
Law: Switzerland isn't yet *overruled* (but I have the feeling that they are working hard to get this *corrected* :/). If you actually use your brain a little you won't have any problems with anything. You can drink on the streets, no problem, but if you make trouble, you get trouble. No one cares how drunk, stoned or whatever you walk around, as long as you behave at least a little. Smoking weed is a little special... You don't get *hunted* for it and in many clubs no one cares if someone is having a *happy cigarette *. But if you really are too obvious and sort of walk right into the police with your joint, well...
Sad: Music: The Music scene is tiny and some really great bands just can't make it because they are in Switzerland where it's hard to live from music alone. It's a little sad, but well... Small country, small scene.
Don't like: People like to stay a bit to much on the save side for my taste. This has some good effects but also some that are at least "questionable", the whole mentality isn't very "open" (but it's slowly getting better, at least I have the feeling it is)...
4 Weeks + Christmas holydays (Christmas - New Year) a year is all we get (by law, if a company wants it can give more) -.- and only the really big Christian Holydays are worth getting a free day(s) (well, this depends on the place you work, I just took the loser card ^^).
Food is expensive, well, everything is expensive but we also earn much so this sort of balances itself out. Just food really tends to be very expensive compared to other countries even if you keep the loan difference in mind. It's in no way horribly overpriced but it just feels strange to pay WAAAY less for eating in a restaurant as soon as you enter Germany, France or Italy.
Speed limits.. To low :p (120 on highways (to low), 80's on normal roads (meh), 50 in towns (fine))... Oh and my American car is too long for our standard parking spaces .
No Sea access... :/
Btw: It's really funny how only the US citizens mention *freedom*, i don't know, i would never mention this because this is something that is just totally normal and nothing worth mentioning... Really funny, seems like your really brainwashed into thinking that the USA for some reason grants more freedom than every other place in the world ^^. Thats just something i noticed in this and also in other topics, also how often your politicians like to use the word... I'm really wondering what is up with that.

edit: on second thoughts...'meh'

I worked as a temp at a German company in Holland, and I have come to meet them as very nice, friendly, helpfull, responsible, and skilled people. Only I found that most of them had this I-am-not-good-enough mentality, which was totally ridiculus.
