There's a good chance this will have turned into a flamewar by page 2, but the topic came up today with friends and I'm curious to hear you guys' answers.
I'd like to hear about things that for you set your country apart to make your life more enjoyable. You may or may not like living in your country, but each country has its unique characteristics and I'm curious to know what they are for you.
My list contains a lot of random and unimportant details, but maybe those little things do a better job of portraying what it is I like about my country than if I wrote a longwinded essay. It does seem very incomplete though, I'll probably add more as I think of them.
About Switzerland I like
- that our 7 'presidents' can go to work by train and without security
- that there's no need to own a car because the public transportation system is really good
- that Switzerland's wealth seems natural and unpretentious (compared to a place like Dubai, hard to explain what I mean here)
- that the headline of this evening's paper was about some incidents of the trolleys in the trains not being able to serve coffee
- that there's no area of Zurich (our biggest city) I wouldn't dare visit at night
- that noone has too little to eat and there are like zero beggars
- that we have 4 official languages
I dislike
- that people can get worked up over stuff like coffee in trains and cancelled boats
- that we tend to be conformist and creativity and individuality are only viewed as good within tight boundaries
- that we like mediocrity so much
- that you get completely ripped off in every club and bar in Zurich

Likes: -Beautiful nature -The fact we have 4 different seasons(winter, summer, spring and autumn). Cold winters and warm summers (warm to us >_<) -The extreme stuff we do: Sauna (over 100c or its pussy) and "avantouinti" which is basically that we swim in a hole in a frozen lake/sea. Yes we actually do that. Its combined with a sauna too. We go from sauna to swim and back and forth Good for your health. -The fact that we are so badass we didnt lose to russia. -Free health care. -High standards of living. -Free school, and free food and books in school. (after high school you have to buy hte books though if you want education) -Finnish art (music, paintings, movies, literature etc). -The finnish language. -Beautiful cities like helsinki and many more.
Dislikes -Alcoholism. Its everywhere. -People look all moody all the time. People usually don't go around with a smileyface here. -many people are depressed around here. -Boring food. I like it though but it is very plain usually. -Many people are stupid fat beer drinking racists etc. Much like rednecks would be for americans.

Dislikes -Corruption on all levels -The way most of the ppl think -Mainstream Music -Infrastructure
and since I live in Germany for some time now I will dare share some of my impressions
Likes -Multi-cultural environment -Nature -A lot of fairly easy ways to earn enough cash for your life as a student -Ppl respect the rules -Beer -Most of the germans are very friendly, even thou you know they dont really mean it -The food is actually not so expensive
Dislikes -I cannot afford to spend cash on all my hobbies. I had to give up the snowboarding and the tennis. The sport-club membership cards are very expensive. -Even when its reasonable and useful to make an exception of some rule, german ppl will never do it, I think partly because they are afraid to break even simple rules. -The food is really bad
And smth that is quite odd, I cant tell really whether I like it or not -The holidays. I've seen some crazyass shit in my life, but the germans have some really weird holidays and ways to celebrate them
-fast food nation.. Its covered with fast food places AND I ONLY LIKE WENDYS! -How expensive college is. -How ridiculous we have gone into consumerism. -The government gets jack shit done. -American news sucks a dick -The job market nowadays.

I live in korea, but I'm from England so here's lists for both;
Korea:
I like:
~ The friends I've made. ~ Esports and the opportunities for unique/surreal experiences it's given me. ~ The music; mainly Epik High, Seo Taiji, Big Bang. (The concerts are awesome too.) ~ The food (Omurice, BBQ, Paris Croissant bakery etc.) ~ The shopping - I can get lots of interesting things here from brands we don't have in the UK. ~ Very cheap public transport which is easy to use and clean. ~ Korean television - Super Action Channel is like a non-stop diet of Steven Seagal movies XD. ~ My onetel - it's immaculate, quiet, all bills included for a cheap price and I feel safe because it's got CCTV and a password locked front door.
I dislike:
~ The rudeness of certain people. You get it everywhere I suppose, but some people here are really overtly racist. Especially high schoolers and older people. ~ That they put ham in most sandwiches (ham *and* tuna? WTF?) ~ Old kimchi smell in my fridge - blargh. ~ Lack of certain foods from back home (brown bread, pasties, real fish and chips etc.)
England:
I like/miss:
~ My Mum and my cat. ~ The food. It's cheaper than Korea to cook at home (which I enjoy.) and healthy food like veggies and fruit is less expensive. I miss pies, pasties, fish and chips, certain types of drink and brown bread ;_; Oh and quiche!~ ~ The parks and old buildings - Korean temples and shrines are beautiful, but I do love English castles and parks. ~ Being able to understand everyone and be understood (I'm rubbish at korean and I do try my best, but sometimes when you're tired it's even more draining to have to speak a second language.) ~ My friends back home (I sadly don't really speak to many of them now.) ~ British television.
I dislike:
~ The chavs. I hate people who sponge off of the benefit system. If you're genuinely incapable of working due to illness or other circumstances then I have total sympathy, but a lot of people in England are just lazy gits. ~ The litter - although it can be just as pronounced here in Korea. ~ The expensive public transport. ~ The lack of a decent government.
Instead of likes/dislikes, I'll compare China with U.S. since I've spent about half of my life living in the U.S. and half of my life living in China.
China: Selfish US: Self-centered
In general, the Chinese culture is more selfish. Chinese people are less likely to help unless they're getting something in return. They are more likely to accept money as the standard of happiness. In general, U.S. citizens are more defensive or arrogant of their race, religion, sexual orientation, and personal tastes. People are just so insanely proud of being Jewish or being gay or their niche music or their favorite beer.
Likes: - Ethnic diversity - Geographic diversity - South Park - Unnecessary violence in films and video games
Dislikes: - Feels like all the major news stations always have an agenda, I realize that totally impartial reporting is a pipe dream but I swear they don't even try! - We're fat as hell! I find it hilarious that whenever I walk places, (often hugely obese) people frequently stop and ask me if I need a ride. - As an individual citizen, it's no fun to be stigmatized by the rest of the world. While I understand the reasons, it can often be pretty unwarranted (even Orome couldn't resist sneaking a jab in there ) Just consider us to be the fat kid on the playground with rich asshole parents. Yeah, we're not totally blameless but we probably don't deserve a swirly either.

Bosnia : Likes : -You can roam anywhere safely unless you around drunk people -Its very free, and you can smoke at like 5 years old and nobody would care ( not really a good think ) - The people respect each other. - Hot summers, cold winters. - You can own a piece of land and grow over 20 "plants" and nobody would notice - HOOOTTTT girls :D Dislikes : * Kind poor * Hard to get plants.
Likes: - freedom (speech, press - if you are complaining about the US news media's partiality...I think you should do some research on what the press is like in most other countries) - strong demand for high-skill jobs - world's best universities - friendly, hospitable people - professional sports (especially the NFL and baseball) - relatively stable government and economy (and a sweet constitution) - a nation of immigrants with few "assimilation" policies - eagles are badass
Dislikes: - wide roads - large cars - ultraconservatism, ultra-religiosity, and kooky homeschoolers - McMansions - a general lack of taste and style (nobody wears sweat pants in public in Europe, besides bums) - we need a better national soccer team! - slavery and anti-native american policies in our history - social security and medicare

I was in Poland last summer (had a great time: great country, friendly people, good beer!), and this is the number one thing that I noticed:
You have all of these absolutely gorgeous Polish girls, like 14-19 year old girls who could easily be models and are dressed immaculately, running around with these Polish teenage guys who look like total bums (no offense meant). Like, on the street I regularly passed some 5'11'' skinny beautiful Polish girl wearing $100 lingerie, holding on to the arm of a guy who is 5 inches shorter than her and looks like most American guys at his age - he hasn't figured out how often to shave his half beard yet, and his pants are hanging off of his ass.
In the US, girls like that just date older guys for the most part. What's the Polish secret? How do young Polish guys score these ridiculous women?

First i'll start from the bottom Dislikes : Many hypocrits and very proud ppl (including myself, though i'm trying to get rid of it). Too much immigrations everywhere, i've nothing against them but we seriously first need to control it cauz it's just borderline. Our government are always lying and always postpone their promises (who else doesn't ?). Girls. Yeah sure they can be really beautiful but are a pain once you're in a relation. What's worse is that girls often prefers to be with wrong, rich ppl rather than the honest,loyal,poor ones. God. Whores. Argh. I've so many reasons to hate but won't list them today. Maybe later.

-The grade school system -The cafe culture -How nice the people are -Lack of SPEED LIMIT on the autobahn -The environment in general. A perfect mix of real beautiful scenery when you want it an ultra modern cities when you want that. -The beer
Dislikes:
-Difficulty of finding a job -Lack of free coke refills and ketchup packets -How early people get married. -The lack of diversity.
Likes: -Can bum around and unlimited cheap beer. -We don't care about hygiene when we drink hard liquor or hard pale pilsen (we use one Cup/Mug/Whatever then we have a tanggero or "the guy that pours the drink" and is distributed clockwise) -We're as free as whatever we like (some people even bring illegal free-arms then when they get caught, as if nothing happened since the police right here loves to exort shit) -If you're middle class or high middle class, you get to have the best chicks in town. - the people are very friendly to foreigners - we have ALOT OF HOT GIRLS (you don't need to go all alpha male on em, just as long as your friendly and charismatic then you should be fine) - multi-ethnic country (we have chinese, koreans, and a hint of half spanish half-filipinos) - God, the beaches here are the best. - Both rich and poor people alike can live side-by-side (In the slums the rich people doesn't move out even though the whole street is infested by squatters, and they co exist fine) - LAN shops are sooo cheap here - Almost everything is cheap (that's why most can still survive without a job)
Dislikes - Hard to get a Job - Employers are so baised base on what school you came from - Government is so fucking corrupt (need I say more?) - Traffick sucks. - Health system sucks - Justice system is really imbalanced (if you're rich, you can do anything you want and you get away with it, not alike for the poor people) - There's too many thugs-wanna-bee in the streets. - Man, alot of people here are addicted to crystal meth, Filipinos are tolerable/patient but when they use meth, that's the time they go berserk. - There's alot of beggars in the streets (sucks for the streetchildren) - Crime rate is soooo fucking high =( - Broadband sucks - not enough starcraft players.
- Honest politicians. That's right, when asked why we were supporting the US invasion of Iraq, our Prime Minister said that they were our biggest trading partner worth lots of money so obviously we would support them duh. - Smart politicians. When asked what kind of support we would be sending, our Prime Minister said that our country was too small to do anything but cheer. The government did allow US ships and aircraft to use our airspace/port, a somewhat insignificant move considering they're miles away from the action and they wouldn't pass Singapore on the way to Iraq anyway. - Super efficient. Just ask Fakesteve. - Very clean - Very safe - Lots of greenery. There are plants EVERYWHERE and it makes such a difference - Multi racial, multi cultural, but very little interracial/faith tension. - Everyone speaks English (plus at least one other language, usually) - Fabulous public housing, easily affordable and very, very nicely built - HUGE variety of food... makes it easy to eat cheap, healthy food... or cheap unhealthy food if you prefer - Generally honest people - Government generally does the right thing, even if it's unpopular - Very good schools with very good facilities - Recently declared most wired country on earth, narrowly beating South Korea! - Red light district filled with prostitutes but also with some of the best food in the country. Strangely enough, a perfectly acceptable place to bring a girl on a date or a family out to dinner. - Cheap, clean love hotels that rent out rooms by the hour. - 24 hour country! Always something to do!
Dislikes
- Lousy local TV. I really envy the Brits. - Rigid bureaucrats (though they are, admittedly, very efficient within their comfort zones) - No local pornography industry - People who don't seem to treat their domestic help as human beings - High pressure school system - No beggars... because begging is illegal (!) - Practically no welfare system - Changes too fast... old shops and buildings disappear really fast... we don't have many memories to build an identity round.

Likes: - Small and incredibly convenient. - WORLD'S BEST public transport system, takes me 30mins max to get where i want to go without having to drive - Awesome food - plethora of swear words/phrases, feels soooo good to cuss out people in cantonese - how we are close enough to japan to get their awesome arcade machines - cheapest McDonalds in the world, and we get the shogun burger which USA hasn't even heard of - cheapest cab fares in the world - surrounded by sea, so we can get fresh seafood and do watersports - safe, very low crime rates - lots of relaxing hiking paths that can bring you away from the city and return you back just as quickly - beautiful night view - gangster/kungfu movies - funky urban planning (sometimes efficient, sometimes not, but always interesting: ie having an public amphitheater/park hidden behind and in the middle of the bar/drinking district) - hilarious local slangs and idioms
Dislikes: - powerless political system, with empty puppets in the government - awfully humid and hot in the summer (holyshit even the walls sweat!) - general racist attitude (tolerated and considered acceptable) - non diverse population DESPITE what the tourism board says - horrible, horrible local TV dramas with high school level drama skills - VERY bitchy girls (might be a universal thing?) - general apathy towards social issues, and focused money making rat-race belief - shitty generic love-ballad pop music (seriously its always the same goddamn tune/theme)
Likes - Free health care for everyone - Free education for everyone - Generally a good welfare system that takes care of everybody in our society - The nature. - Rich country with a generally high living standard - Even the poor lives indoor and have money for food, pretty much no homeless people. - Extremely safe country, very little crimes
Dislikes - An awful penal system imo, way to short sentences (like usually your out within 5 years of murdering someone, unless you have done something gruesome) and the prisoners have it way to good, having separate cells with showers, TVs etc. (This is better than a lot of our old people have it in institutions) - Everything is sick expensive because of ultra high taxes on them, like 10$ for a pack of cigarettes, 40$ and up for a bottle of vodka, almost 2$ pr liter of gasoline. - The weather can be real shitty at times
In total a great country to live in, and I don`t think I would trade it for anywhere else.

I have to ask this since it is my dream to one day live in Portugal. I have read that the cost of living etc, is slowly on the rise with the EU etc. But is it that bad all around right now? Is Lisbon an affordable place to live? Should I learn Spanish first then Portuguese, is it that complex?
Likes: 1. It is big enough that you can go many states and they are completely different..even different culture/accent. 2. (being honest here) I feel safe/good know how powerful we are economically and militarily. 3. I like the relative balance between the 2 political parties. Power flows back and forth fairly quickly and therefore 1 party cannot get too comfortable or depart too far from the general public's opinion 4. I like that the US is comparatively more conservative/religious than other places. 5. I like the rural places. 6. I like the opportunities everywhere to be whatever you want to work hard to become. 7. I love the flag, the anthem, and the patriotism.
Dislikes: 1. I dislike seeing government assistance being taken advantage of by lazy people. 2. I HATE the hyper-judicial society (SUE THE BASTARD mindset). The judicial system is the #1 problem in America imo. 3. I dislike reality tv, teen/celebrity magazines, anything having to do with trying to follow the lives of the celebrities in general (as if they mattered).

South Korea Likes: PC Cafes, Just amazing for my own personal experience Starcraft~~ Really haven't experienced that many things yet, since the last time i've been there was when I was like, 12. Dislikes: All the fucking stereotypical Asian traits are true, because 85% of all those typical statements are based on how actual asians have been like. And the thing is, people actually promote it, as if it really isn't anything, but deep in their emotions and minds they really are being hurt, they just want it to stop, however, they don't know any good procedures to handle problems. Thats some reason why stereotypes are still reigning and brining fear into races, (LoL@White peeps) Gangs, and there are a lot of shady people during the night. the cost of living in Lisbon is pretty high, though it depends on the areas, some areas are insanely high, and Lisbon has it's ghettos soo... yeah pick and choose. Lisbon is a unique and gorgeous city.
Portugal has some rural areas, that are breathtakingly beautiful and dirt cheap, even right next to the beach

being able to communicate basically in Portuguese is easy, but an American accent will get you ridiculed.
Learning the language enough to appreciate it's beauty and complexity takes at least about 8 months - a year, if your intelligent and have a facility with languages, and takes 1.5-3 years to be able to implement it in it's full glory.
edit: also sorry to start a bit of a flame war, but saying London has great architecture is laughable, also their food blows.
The rest is true though London is awesome, and the British are fun as hell, and they have that sexy accent i love so much.

I can't stand the city/place I live in and I have been wanting to go to/live in Portugal just because I think it the most amazing country in Europe. Rich history, culture, and absolute beauty. After a few years I hope, providing nothing is holding me back, I want to move there and from there see the world one country at a time.

i came from the 3rd world country as well and i have to mention everyone says same thing over there
in reality its all straight up failure and the very few "smart guys" that ran off to "NASA" actually not smarter then 18k NASA employees in fact they not exceptional at all and probably( with 80% probability) going to live a life of a first generation immigrant and die lonely regretting the moment they left their home country

SomeMost overly religious conservatives don't know how to justify some of their beliefs apart from the Bible (not even philosophers), and some most left-wing progressives don't know how to justify their points apart from crappy anedcotal evidence and disproven dialectic. Still, it's better than not being able to argue at all.

I HATE the attitude of many Germans who feel such an immense guilt because of what happened in the Third Reich though they were born either afterwards or were still very little kids at that time. I have to ask this since it is my dream to one day live in Portugal. I have read that the cost of living etc, is slowly on the rise with the EU etc. But is it that bad all around right now? Is Lisbon an affordable place to live? Should I learn Spanish first then Portuguese, is it that complex?

I can't stand the city/place I live in and I have been wanting to go to/live in Portugal just because I think it the most amazing country in Europe. Rich history, culture, and absolute beauty. After a few years I hope, providing nothing is holding me back, I want to move there and from there see the world one country at a time.

the economy there is shit, everything is as expensive as any other 1st world country in europe, but you get paid shit salaries, so quality of material life plummets. If you have a house there or some money to get a house and all you have to do is pay utilities then your good, but if your going to pay rent ... well please do yourself a favor and don't go.
average salary is 600 euros. rent will go for 200-300 for a place in Lisbon. utilities usually included, net is not an utility, although internet access in Portugal is pretty cheap, and fast.

Honestly although the grammatical standings of both languages carry a resemblance of one another, they are very different and if you learn Spanish you will only have the advantage of having some Latin common ground, which although valuable, it's not worth your time, it is much easier to go directly into Portuguese, and i get the distinct feeling that Portuguese class is taught by a Brazilian teacher, and although it is the same written language( although both cultures uses a different tense I.E passive voice vs active. not the these exactly but this is the general idea ) it differs GREATLY.

Like: Culture. Our liberalism has led the music industry to be very diverse and high-quality. I'm into metal myself and I think we have some great bands in that genre. Dislike: Culture. Like: Clean, I notice differences wherever else I am (I wasn't at that many places outside Europe to be honest), French and Italian Cities often "smell" and also look like it as soon as you leave the tourist "hotspots". German cities seem to be better in this regard (at least Hamburg, I don't know any of the other big ones).
Safety: Go wherever whenever you want, sure there are some places where you have to care a little more but there is really no place I am afraid off. Our politicians can roam freely, for instance Zurich's major uses the public transport like everyone else. I never saw someone carry a gun except: policemen, soldiers, hunters or sport shooters (which to 99% are former soldiers and often also hunters...).
Public Transport and Highways/Roads. I live in a village with 2000 inhabitants. We lack a train station but just to explain how close everything is: I'm in Basel or Zürich in under 1 hour (Zurich is more like 40 minutes). I'm in Zug, Bern or Lucerne in about 1 hour (a little less for Zug and Lucerne, a little more for Bern). I'm in the alps in about 1 hour 30 minutes (up to 3-4 hours depending on *where* exactly). In 1 hour 20 minutes I'm in Interlaken which looks like a damn postcard :p.
Political system: We got 4 big political parties and 2-3 other a little smaller ones which all *reign* our country together. There is no coalition or a clear majorities in our 2 political chambers and the parties are to diverse to truly work in every aspect together anyway. Strong direct democracy on all levels (state, canton, town/village), seriously it's damn near to the point of getting annoying to vote for all the important and very often not so important stuff ^^.
Education system: Our public universities/schools are pretty good and actually *better* than most of the private ones (here). Studying is also pretty cheap (compared to say the US or Britain). I just checked it: Studying at the ETH Zurich (27 best university in 2005 worldwide on some random Google page I just found :p) costs you about 650 Swiss-Franks per semester which is ~$450.00 whiteout Books and other stuff you need.
Night live... Well, it's not the best around but Zürich/Basel offer everything I could ask for (well Hamburg is 10x times better, but Hamburg is just pure awesome :p), at least our clubs have open at least until 4 a.m., many go on 6+ a.m. (sometimes longer) unlike in Ireland where everything is closing at around 2.30? There are clubs for all sorts of music so... If you know the cities there is something for every taste... Oh, and we don't overdress us when we go out... I never was in a club were some guy actually watched closely what someone is wearing and the ones that do it are most of the times not very *hard* (if your stuff is clean and you don't look like a homeless you can go nearly everywhere ).
Law: Switzerland isn't yet *overruled* (but I have the feeling that they are working hard to get this *corrected* :/). If you actually use your brain a little you won't have any problems with anything. You can drink on the streets, no problem, but if you make trouble, you get trouble. No one cares how drunk, stoned or whatever you walk around, as long as you behave at least a little. Smoking weed is a little special... You don't get *hunted* for it and in many clubs no one cares if someone is having a *happy cigarette *. But if you really are too obvious and sort of walk right into the police with your joint, well...
Sad: Music: The Music scene is tiny and some really great bands just can't make it because they are in Switzerland where it's hard to live from music alone. It's a little sad, but well... Small country, small scene.
Don't like: People like to stay a bit to much on the save side for my taste. This has some good effects but also some that are at least "questionable", the whole mentality isn't very "open" (but it's slowly getting better, at least I have the feeling it is)...
4 Weeks + Christmas holydays (Christmas - New Year) a year is all we get (by law, if a company wants it can give more) -.- and only the really big Christian Holydays are worth getting a free day(s) (well, this depends on the place you work, I just took the loser card ^^).
Food is expensive, well, everything is expensive but we also earn much so this sort of balances itself out. Just food really tends to be very expensive compared to other countries even if you keep the loan difference in mind. It's in no way horribly overpriced but it just feels strange to pay WAAAY less for eating in a restaurant as soon as you enter Germany, France or Italy.
Speed limits.. To low :p (120 on highways (to low), 80's on normal roads (meh), 50 in towns (fine))... Oh and my American car is too long for our standard parking spaces .

I worked as a temp at a German company in Holland, and I have come to meet them as very nice, friendly, helpfull, responsible, and skilled people. Only I found that most of them had this I-am-not-good-enough mentality, which was totally ridiculus.

The Good: -There is an astounding amount of diversity, which has allowed us to produce so much bitchin' culture, from movies to art to music. On a national level, this is probably the best thing I can say about America. It is far from the only good thing, though, but most everything else would only hold true on a regional level (which says something about the level of diversity to be found).

American's tend to mention freedom because it's one of the founding principals of our country. Perhaps we don't mean that we love how free we are (because it's true, there are countries that have more freedoms), but that we love that our country was founded on the ideal of freedom.

Ouu no, it became almost impossible for the ppl in bulgaria to spend a holiday on our sea, its just so damn expensive in the big resorts already. Thats why it became trendy to go to Greece or somewhere else nearby for the summer. I think the main problem for Romania and Bulgaria is that there is no middle class build up yet, I mean there are clearly many rich and many poor ppl, but the average Joe doesn't have the life-standard of a guy from Slovenia for example. And joining the EU barely did any good so far (I'm not sure about Romania thou, maybe you can say) I'm not so close to the political life in my country but, every time I go back to Bulgaria, which happens like 2 times per year, its always the same shit

Bad: -Race is a serious problem and no one has the answer to solve the clear and present inequality between the standard of living of whites and non-whites. Ireland: -I love our culture, language and music. Seriously the Irish language is beautiful. -95% of the people are friendly and willing to help out with anything. If your car breaks down or whatever, the first or second carr to come along will stop to help you out. There are some assholes but its the same all over. -Socially, I've never had as much fun on a night out anywhere else in the world. Just the atmosphere and the craic seems to be better here than anywhere else, and most people I've met who aren't Irish will agree. -Public transport is great. You can get pretty much anywhere without a car. Just don't expect it to be on time. -Awesome landscapes, from the hills of Connemara, to the Burren, to the mountains of Kerry. Great for hillwalking, mountain climbing etc.

I worked as a temp at a German company in Holland, and I have come to meet them as very nice, friendly, helpfull, responsible, and skilled people. Only I found that most of them had this I-am-not-good-enough mentality, which was totally ridiculus.
Yes you can add wide ranged perfectionism at both the Pro and Con side for Germany. On the one hand this leads to quality work close to perfection - on the other hand to the attitude you are talking about. A particular funny thing I experience often is that Germans will answer "No" when asked if they speak English unless they are perfectly fluent. Pro tip for foreigners in Germany: People < 30 do speak at least some English, don't even ask if they do just start with English and don't believe them if they claim they don't understand you.

Ouu no, it became almost impossible for the ppl in bulgaria to spend a holiday on our sea, its just so damn expensive in the big resorts already. Thats why it became trendy to go to Greece or somewhere else nearby for the summer. I think the main problem for Romania and Bulgaria is that there is no middle class build up yet, I mean there are clearly many rich and many poor ppl, but the average Joe doesn't have the life-standard of a guy from Slovenia for example. Well its still free for people who don`t pay taxes, don`t drink, don`t smoke and don`t drive cars also. Of course most people pay for this via taxes during their lives, but say your a piss poor university student who gets ill who have no one who can financially back you, you still get free treatment unlike say if you lived in the US where you are on your own if you don`t have insurance etc. Also everyone gets a fair chance for an education, even if your family is poor you still go to the same university as rich kids, and as long as your grades are good enough you can become anything here, lack of money will not stop you.
Then again complaining about things being expensive here is sort of silly since everyone makes lots of money here. Even shitty easy no education jobs pays like 40k$ a year, but I guess no matter how well humans have it we always find something to complain about

I have to learn romanian and take exams from it... Now that should sound natural, but the fact is that i'm part of the hungarian minority (since Transilvania once belonged to Hungary, so now many hungarian ppl live in Romania). Ofc you have to know the language of your country but taking exactly the same exams as the romanian romanians do (god, i hate english for this, how do you say this to sound better?), even though we learn it as a foreign language. That's a disadvantage beacause these exams count a lot even if you want to go for a hungarian university here in Romania (yeap, we have university). For high-school graduation we have 8 exams. 2 from hungarian and 2 from romanian (oral+written) and 4 more (one of them is history/geography in romaninan). Now not-hungarian romanians have less, only 6, from witch 2 is romanian their native language so they dont have to prepare that much for that. Most of my classmates speak english better than romanian, so you can imagine how hard is for some of them to take the exams.
Everythin is quite slow. Litereally everything. From bureaucracy to disposal service, everything is really slow
Corruption, i'm not really bodered directly by this, it's just sad to know that exists and the country is marked by it.

I knew this british guy who lived next to my parents, I guess he moved there when I was like 10 or something he didnt speak any norwegian then, but when I met him again like 2 years ago he started speaking norwegian to me but despite having lived here 10 years his pronunciation was not great so I just replied in english and we started speaking that instead.

Scandinavian languages are pretty hard to learn from what I've heard and given some of the grammatical rules/structures we have it's probably true. But of course you would learn it if you were to try and if you lived in a Scandinavian country. Although you would probably have to ask people not to speak english to you :p

Yeah but it's made up for with higher wages. And while technically it's not free, the taxes you pay towards these are very small in comparison to the money you pay to have private medical care or to send your kids to a private school.

Your pattern you think you are seeing is generally completely wrong. Countries with small populations are able to support healthcare and education like that.
Their crap is horribly expensive because smaller countries don't really produce their own stuff, they have to import a whole lot more of it than say the US does. Yes, the US does have low tax rates compared to most of the rest of the industrialized world we also have the highest debt per capita in comparison... by a huge margin.
Your conservative viewpoint is wonderful and all but it's completely misguided in this case.

yes that thing with the exams is quite weird, good thing that i`m native ^^. But seriously, u shouldn`t worry to much about that, there are endless possibilities to cheat on the exams last year when I was takin the exams it was a complete mess, everyone was having hundreds of papers ready and stuff

yeah, i heard stories about that too. Though i'm not worried for myself too much, i speak quite well and learn very easely, i just find the system lacking.
And Romania is formed by 3 major regions, one of which is Transylvania, once part of Hungary, than independent, than part of austro-hungary, now part of Romania. Back than, few decades ago, it was a very diverse region, over 1 million hungarian, 1 million german and around 1million jews lived here, with the romanian majority. You should never mispronounce a Scandinavian language due to to their being relatively phonetic. As for immersion, this is most effective when you have reached the intermediate stage of linguistic acquisition. That is to say: learn Bokmal through to B1 or so at home, then go take a summer language course in Oslo.

Lol I went to Quebec last week, and I was surprised at how few people knew english. I know that, as an American, I should have at least brushed up on some pidgeon French, but it was still shocking. Nevertheless, I thanked them profusely when they spoke english for me. My ignorance, not theirs.

I don't know if this is a good thing about our country, but we have a lot of dialects in here. So we have Filipino as our main language but when you go to the lower parts of our country, you'd encounter a different dialect when you cross the street. Of course that's being sarcastic but we really have a lot of dialects here.

You're only looking at federal debt? Americans are ABSOLUTELY more indebted as a whole than most nations. Aggregate personal debt rivals in amount that of the federal government, and let's not forget state debts as well.
And the primordial argument about the services vis-a-vis taxes is stupid. Bang-for-the buck we're way worse off than the Europeans. That is, cost-benefit analysis, our (services/tax+costs) ratio is much lower than theirs on the aggregate. If you're an average citizen, you'll get much better health-care than here, and pay less through your taxes than we pay here for private service, and that's before factoring in what we spend anyway on Medicare/Medicaid.
EDIT: And if you don't believe me look up the various special reports on US citizens flying to India to receive medical care.
This country scares the fuck out of me with its ruthless capitalistic mentality! The finance guys control everything, the masses are placated by materialism, and the politicians are cowards for whom there aren't enough good citizens in the country to be held accountable to.

You get used to temperatures rather fast. For sure it's cold but afteer 2 years it's nothing special anymore.

Second year: *Hot*. Third year: Everything under 20 degrees feels cold, until at least 25+ degrees they wear *long* clothes.
I think this works the same with really cold places. Your body needs time to adjust until he "gets it".
Any socialist measures we take are always tacked onto our private-sector approaches anyway, in a lame attempt to not disturb stat-quos and placate both sides. These are almost exactly my thoughts. Just couple things to correct:
The food is not boring, imho it depends where you live (south/north) what kind of food you eat. It's up to yourself that is the food boring or not ^^
I'm not racist, but too many of the immigrants are actually very rude and breaks the law, that's why there are those "fat beer drinking racists". It's bad thing for those immigrants that actually are hard working and very polite
like: a lot of cultural freedom. you can be whoever you want to be here because theres about a million different cultures and a pretty good social climate to operate, tolerance is promoted etc. good weather most of the time and generally people are pretty friendly and outgoing. we have pretty high standard of living which is so easy to take for granted, also theres access to many of the worlds cultures due to immigrant populations so you can get lots of awesome food. AFL is the world's greatest sport. tbh the things i like about australia way outweigh the bad and i could go on forever but who wants to hear about that?

- FOOD : best in the world. I really like Italian and all kinds of Asian food, but French cuisine is just another level.
- Wine : No wine in the world compares too a great Bordeaux red wine. Even though South America, Australia, and New Zealand are improving fast, France is still way ahead.
- Nature : mountains, sea, country... We have everything. Even if it really depends on where you live. I personnally live 2h from the best ski resorts in the French Alps and 30 mins away from the sea.
- Health coverage : Pretty good, even though I guess it is not as good as in Scandinavian countries. But way better than in UK or the US.
- Cultural heritage : thinkers, scientists, etc... And lots of monuments, museums... Some countries like Germany and Italy and probably Japan beat us at that anyway.

Honestly, I have visited a few other countries, and really loved Canadian (I stayed in Toronto and Vancouver), Norwegian, and Swedish mentalities. God I would love to live in Sweden.

Funny, Finland is where I was born and China is where I'm heading(Applied to HKU). Finnish people are hardly that moral, they're just scared to break the law. I've lived in Italy also and it's much better than Finland, although it's still too much Europe. I don't really understand why exactly people want to come to the cold hell that Finland is, cold both in climate and emotion.

Sweden: - Free healthcare - Free education with free food and books up untill you reach uni levels - Very good public transportation(atleast in Stockholm) - The ladies - Our low crime rate or whatever you may call it - Our stand against the world when it comes to keeping the internet free - Swedish people in general, find them and scandinavians to be more relaxed and polite then alot of other countries
On the other hand... - Our stand to keep the internet free is going down the drain with new ludacris copyright laws(IPRED) which basicly allows corporations to headhunt for people acting only on suspicion and without any evidence whatsoever, something our police cant even do. - Swedish people or more like people from Stockholm. I hear a lot of mixed stuff about France. My friend, who is probably the biggest, inconsiderate shitbag in the world, went there, and said they were some of the nicest people to him, and I highly doubt he could be bothered to learn a word of french.
I was about 5-6 times in France and to me it seemed like this:
North Coast = Friendly (friendliest were in the bretagne, the people felt more like a very good mixture of british and french mentalities/cultures ) The more south you go the more the french stereotype hits you. I really felt like an idiot in the camargue (but it's beautiful), the only nice people were hookers that you wouldn't want to have sex with when your live depends on it .
Paris is something entirely different anyway, it's one of the biggest cities in the world after all.

Pretty awesome if you ask me. Likes: -Tap water is drinkable. -People eat a hearty breakfast here. I've been to a few countries in Europe, and they barely eat anything for breakfast (they'll have, for instance, a croissant or some other type of bread with coffee, and that's it o_O). -Generally better and friendlier service in hotels, restaurants, stores, etc than in other countries.
Dislikes: -I think it's great that our culture is so diverse, but to a large extent, American culture is a conglomeration of various distinct cultures and minorities that generally keep to themselves. Blacks will generally congregate with other blacks, Asians with Asians, and so forth. I rather despise all of these ethnic minority clubs/groups/unions. It seems to me that they are only reinforcing the racial boundaries. -Our patriotism is way over the top. Too many pig-headed morons who quite seriously believe that we are the "land of the free, home of the brave", and that we are thoroughly better than every other nation. -It's terribly annoying how the government and the majority of our citizens feel the need to make every little international affair our business. Especially given the economic crisis at hand, we are no longer in a position to be an international leader. This constant meddling in world affairs is also a big reason why much of the world hates us. -A lot of people here are way too materialistic and have a superficial mindset. Our morals have also degenerated quite considerably. I think the media is very much to blame. We have a large variety of trashy pop culture magazines and reality TV shows that teach our young women that nothing is more important than being beautiful, popular, and fashionable, as well as encourage them to be sexually loose. This can of course apply to boys as well, but I think girls are much more negatively affected by it. Personally I am all for censorship, and I think there needs to be a lot more of it. Our TV programs and movies have just an excessive amount of trash, violence, profanity, and sexually-related material that has caused a serious degeneration in our culture and moral standards. And as we know, people in our country spend way too much time watching the tube. Additionally, there has also been a decline in the quality of our popular music and literature, which is probably a factor in this as well. -People here generally have very strong opinions and you will not find many objective thinkers here. If you try to examine an opposite perspective with someone, it is likely that they will either be offended or will not wish to pursue the discussion.

- Most people still think we still are world class leaders in politics, arts, philosophy, etc... when obviously our influence next to none on the international scene.
- People are lazy. You just can't get anything done. No one cares if they do they job correctly or not. You can always try to complain as a customer : no one cares.
- Our entertainment scene is lame : music is always the same standardised shit ; "famous" authors don't even write in proper French. The movies we produce are fairly expensive and yet, they are mostly really bad. And we produce lots of cheesy musicals. I also blame Canada for emptying their trash on us : I cannot count how many Québecois singers have had a career in France with their shitty songs.
Brazil Like: Foreigners assimilation: When foreigners comes to Brazil to stay, they assimilate with the population. We have Japanese, Italians, Germans, Lebanese, Africans, that we cant tell apart from Brazilians. They speak Portuguese fluently, they dont make gethos and there is little discrimination among different races/nationalities. Variety: As you travel around the country you can find cold weather, rain forests, beaches, waterfalls, mountains, hills, deserts. Each state has its own peculiarities. Music: Brazilian music is awesome, and has a lot of variety. Pros: -I live in Wisconsin, and the people here are generally nice and open-minded, then again we are one of the most friendliest states in the country. -Freedom, or at least a pretty good illusion of it. -Abuseable education system. We are far far behind in math and sciences from the rest of the world, and from the looks of it, AP looks easy. High schools have a massive gap to that of higher level education, and as long as I pull my weight now, I should have no problems getting into a top tier system. Also a lovely financial aid system that comes with it most of the time. -We're spoiled, we pretty much have everything a modern society should have.
Cons: -Since we live in a society with so much freedom, there is a dirge and an excess of options, and having too much choice in life actually makes us depressed as shit according to my psych teacher. It in turn, makes us shallow and superficial as a materialistic culture and often misplaced values. "Less is more." -Huge huge gaps in social classes and racial diversity. Brings about unfair racial discrimination on occasion. -High divorce rates. My parents are getting divorced -Typical American ignorance. Although I have not experienced personally, it is believable to me how retarded we can be with global politics and self-righteous behavior. Although we are not a collective society with a singular culture and instead an orgy and cesspool of mixed shit, we all too often are self-destructive and abusive to our ideals.

sorry i didnt clearify this, no i have no problem with dialects. i have no problem with cantonese, shanghainese, yue or w/e, but i can tell dialect from a half-assed attempt at mandarin, But i did mention that this problems occur mostly in the US, where the chinese ppl PROCLAIM they speak mandarin but it sounds like, for the lack of a better word, ultralisk shit

Likes: 1. It is big enough that you can go many states and they are completely different..even different culture/accent. 2. (being honest here) I feel safe/good know how powerful we are economically and militarily. 3. I like the relative balance between the 2 political parties. Power flows back and forth fairly quickly and therefore 1 party cannot get too comfortable or depart too far from the general public's opinion 4. I like that the US is comparatively more conservative/religious than other places. 5. I like the rural places. 6. I like the opportunities everywhere to be whatever you want to work hard to become. 7. I love the flag, the anthem, and the patriotism.

I have a love affair with Cap'n Crunch every morning. But seriously though I've eaten probably 95% of the stuff out there. I usually change it up every time I shop but i guess some of my favorites include: Cap'n Crunch, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Cocao Puffs, Cheerios. damn i love you. i was seriously ticked off at this kid from china in my high school because he rips on japanese stuff all the time and he loves mao. he thinks all the books by the chinese government is right and all that brainwash shit. and he said he likes sushi and manga... then i stopped being friends with him. i was starting to believe all the kids from china are like that. i'm glad i wasn't born there....
Everything is amazing. The weather, the women, and the club scene. The only real problem is all the drunk people. I see so many of them, for instance, when i just walk down the street. I dont know why that is , but it is very annoying.
Likes: -My cities tap water is fresher than any bottled water -Everyone is very easy going -You don't have to be PC because people know your not an ignorant racist -We know we are going to be the last country that gets nuked -Very friendly people -Student drinking culture is insane -Freedom? despite its flaws, i suppose america seems more real and honest. even its crass consumerism has a functional honesty to it. compare a commercial that focus on good tastes versus brand tradition, or legacy. the way i understand the states is that it is a good place from which to be nostalgic/longing for another place, not that i would do that.
