As the title suggests, looking for chillout music with female vocals - looked through some older chillout music threads but they didn't really offer what I was looking for. I don't really have a definition of chillout music, something that makes you feel chill i guess, suitable for a nice long drive in the rain or getting high or whatever. Especially love those where the vocals are sorta ethereal and achingly beautiful. Wow, this is hard to describe. Just to share my favourite songs of these kind are:
The Cranberries (anything off of No Need to Argue is good) Mirah Rilo Kiley Laura Veirs, try "Don't Lose Yourself" Maria Taylor is good, try "Xanax" If you like Massive Attack, you absolutely must listen to Portishead Stars (has male vocals too) M83 (has male vocals too, but seems to be in line with your music tastes) Imogen Heap (exactly what you are looking for IMO) Frou Frou (Imogen Heap's side project) Hush Sound (start with "Echo" and "The Artist") Grouper if you like experimental shit, try "Heavy Water/I'd Rather Be Sleeping"
Edit: ok, so this is more a list of good bands with female leads than "chill out music" per se, but each of these artists does have quieter tracks.
only one I can think of right now is Morcheeba; I have the album Big Calm which definitely fits its mood. the title track is pretty sweet: clicky (youtube).
dude u should check ulrich shnauss or whatever the name of that german dj is since im at work i cant tell u the songs, but the one with japanese vocal is just amazing
I'm amazed nobody mentioned Goldfrapp so far. Both Felt Mountain and Seventh Tree are very, very chill albums, with that "unreal" quality all goldfrapp music has. And Allison's voice is amazing.
Songs of choice (all from Goldfrapp obviosly) Hairy Trees (Black Cherry) Deer Stop (Felt Mountain) Utopia (Felt Mountain) Paper Bag (Felt Mountain) Clowns (Seventh Tree) A&E (Seventh Tree)
Also, not sure if it's been mentioned, but My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless," easily one of my top 5 albums of all time. I'm glad to see somebody else who likes Cocteau Twins!
Do you have most of their stuff? There's like 20 seconds of "Cico Buff" that's pretty much exactly what I think of when I think of "achingly beautiful."
It's funny that many of the songs you name are sung by Elizabeth Fraser (singer of the Cocteau Twins): Teardrop, This Love...
Otherwise, I would mention Mazzy Star! For instance "Fade into you" The vocalist is Hope Sandoval, she also sings on the very beautiful "Asleep From Day" by the Chemical Brothers.

Damn, I knew I forgot someone noticably good, and it was Goldfrapp. Utopia is sick
also, Te Karanga from Rhian Sheenan (from Café del Mar collections like most I have posted)
Nice thread...since there are soo many songs make a rough list. Does it seem like good male vocals are harder to come by? -_-. I know the artists you mention and like most of them, but my style is more psychill like the previously posted once upon a sea of blissful awareness. First two are this style then more normal. Youtube quality is crap but try them out. + Show Spoiler +
Morcheeba already mentioned, is great. Blue states - Your Girl seems to fit DJ Mehdi - Lucky boy (outlines remix) - not exactly chillout but one of my favourites lately Hooverphonic - this strange effect Lamb - Trans fatty acid (Kruder and Dorfmeister mix) - highly recommended You could try a few Nina Simone tracks off Verve Remixed albums Sarah McLachlan - Dirty Little Secret from Thievery Corporation: Versions Thievery Corporation - Beautiful Drug, Sweet Tides, and lots more - these guys are incredible some stuff from Tosca might suit you, or Zero 7 If you like any of this I can post more, these are the most prominent female vocal tracks I think, but I have a fair amount of chill music.

Yes. It has to do with the voice change during puberty, and that as a result, males are a lot more insecure about singing. Also, there is a social stigma about being a male singer, as if it somehow makes you more feminine. Even though you think this wouldn't be true, given the fact that so many famous male sex symbols are singers, it is...just go to any American high school and see which guys join the choir.
I was in choir throughout high school, and I still sing acappella in college, so I know the difficulty in trying to find decent guys who can sing. In the UCLA Chorale (the uppermost choir at UCLA), which I was a part of, I think 80% of the tenor section were gay.
The best approach to solve this arduous problem is to listen to mixtapes made by this one wonderful, albeit romanian, guy who calls himself MDB. When you like the mixes, just see the tracklist afterwards and continue from there. They're chillout, ambient and new age in general, having 'beautiful female voices' as the driving theme.
The sets themselves are exactly what you're seeking for. Hell, they're even named 'beautiful voices'. That, and they're readily downloadable through his website, mdbmixes.
There are many mixes, from which some are way better than the others, but I figure that's a matter of taste so I wont stray the discussion with my own opinions regarding the best ones, try them out and enjoy.
of course you can get it for free with the right searching if u wanna preview the songs just enter in their names on youtube and you should get some good results. enjoy
o and armin van buuren has a new album called universal religion thats also damn amazing. get them both!

Yeah...the current vocalist was one of the founding members. The only member that has left the group since its founding was a guy, and he was the drummer.
