UPDATE 5:35pm A TEENAGER is dead after a drowning tragedy off a beach in Melbourne's south-east, after a string of rescues yesterday.

The youth, believed to be aged about 15, was brought to shore at Edithvale Beach about 3.30pm, after he got into trouble while swimming in choppy 1.5m seas with friends.

Police said the youth was with two others about 70m from shore when he got into trouble and went under.

He was spotted not far from the Edithvale Lifesavers Club where an unknown good Samaritan dragged him to shore, and other onlookers at the beach attempted to revive him.

They continued CPR until until ambulance officers arrived and took over, but he could not be saved.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said he was aged in his late teens.

Paramedics also tried to revive the young man without success, Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman Christine Paterson said.

"Paramedics got there and CPR was in progress, they continued it but unfortunately he died,'' she said.

The man was in his late teens and was missing before being found in the water, she said.

A report was being prepared for the coroner, police said.

Yesterday's hot weather saw bayside beaches and coastal resorts packed, with surf lifesavers reporting 45 rescues across the state.

Life Saving Victoria spokesman Guy Britt said most rescues had happened at notorious trouble spots, with eight rescues at Gunnamatta, six each at Fairhaven and Portsea, five at Jan Juc and Smiths beach, and four at Woolamai.

MORE info with the article:
Basically what happened was a 16 year old teenager was at the beach at his friends and he drowned. The reason is because they went 60-70 meters off the shore or something and according to his friends, they said the victim rescued them, but could not save himself.

I knew this guy through a music and dance website that I go to and we were pretty good friends online. Now, I don't know this guy in real life but he was an awesome person to talk to and keep me company I know his MySpace and it is the truth. Even though I didn't know him in real life, it feels really weird/empty because he was such a good guy and his actions at the beach shows it.

16 years is too young, he left the world too early

Rest in Peace.

Not to derail but isn't 60 metres offshore in 1.5m seas really not very much for a 16 year old? Or was the water cold and the current pretty strong.

i was wondering that too

going that far in un-patrolled waters is idiotic

i admire his courage for saving his friends though, wow.

It's a shame that this happened. That particular beach doesn't have lifeguards assigned to it during the weekdays, however since it is in the middle of school holidays, and it was around 38 degrees C, (something like 100+ F) it was bound to happen that people would go to the beach. I know lifeguards are volunteers and all, but the government or the lifeguard association should try and put a couple people out there when it seems pretty obvious that young people will be going to the beach.

The summary doesn't correlate to the article?
These sites might be of more use than a StarCraft site, where the majority of posters look on WCIII as the dense misformed fetus produced during Blizzards latest miscarrige.

This. I'm a little confused?
Sounds like somebody else saved HIM, but they weren't able to revive him.

He was one of my close friends. I cried my eyes out when I heard the news. I miss him so much, he definately doesn't deserve it.

He was that far out because of the two guys he saved. They were small and got pulled out by the waters. He saw and just went straight in for them, they both survived but he didn't make it. He was a hero.

UH...what? It's more the responsibility of people to go swimming at beaches with lifeguards than the government needing to provide lifeguards in all beaches where people would possibly go swimming.

That sucks. To save some lives and have yours taken has gotta be shitty. My family has always told me while growing up to never trust open waters (currents/lack of swimming) and I guess that is a big reason I don't even like to go in any beach waters. When I was younger (12-13) I thought I could do whatever the hell I wanted(ignorance) until I got so far in the waters that it was hell swimming back into shore. No matter how much I tried to swim back to shore it seemed as only I was getting further. The taste of salt disgusted me. It took me about 30-45 mins to get back to shore and damn I was fuckin tired and beat for that day.

Well RIP Darren.
