The audience laughs at references to time because they're mocking the rabbits for even bothering to keep track. Time is flowing completely randomly, or maybe not at all.

I can't imagine them making any sense without Inland Empire because everything the rabbits say ties in directly with the plot in Inland Empire. I believe that Rabbits was done before Inland Empire, but they are connected. I think they can exist apart from each other though.

I don't get it - I refuse to believe that anyone but Lynch himself understands what exactly he was attempting to convey, if anything that is. What I do understand is that art that portrays seemingly nothing is done that way for a reason and I personally believe it is to inspire and evoke introspection. I'll never understand what goes on in David Lynch's head but I can't deny that I haven't come up with conclusions that at least work for me and maybe that's the point. I think David Lynch basically said he doesn't understand 100% of what happens in Inland Empire. A lot of his ideas come from meditation, and he said he doesn't always know what they mean. Also, he said for Inland Empire, he just had a lot of separate ideas and then tied them together with an underlying "story" to make a film. Excellent movie in any case.

The laughter broke the tension but the conversation just makes me scared again.

Add rabbit-coustumes to make it feel surreal, some creepy music with the oh so contrary laughter for mysterious effects. So yeah you can sit and wonder and be introspective, but all in all i think it's all about Lynchs name. Twin Peaks and mulholland was fresh, this is not.
