Yesterday, I was browsing the Robot9000 board on 4chan, when I came across a topic discussing surreal films. Someone mentioned a series of episodes about a family of rabbits by David Lynch. It piqued my interest so I decided to watch them. They are incredibly bizarre to the point that it is very disturbing. I found myself frightened with no explanation as to why.

It seems to me that this family of rabbits are actually souls trapped in hell or purgatory. They exist in a limbo state of nonsense, but occasionally become aware of their surroundings and comment on them. I will post the first two episodes here, and if you want to watch the rest look them up on youtube. I hope this will generate some discussion. I'm interested to see if any of you are as disturbed as I am; I do think the videos would make anyone very uncomfortable. Possibly we can discuss its meaning as well, it could be interpreted in a manner of ways.

I hate how this type of meaningless, mysterious-for-no-reason "art" can either be really, really deep or really, really stupid, depending on who's made it. I mean, it's David Lynch, yes. But should we let the status of the messenger modify the meaning of the content?

No.

It's just something that caught my attention. Although it did seem somewhat dadaist at the time, it must mean something.

I thought it may also have to do with the way television has broken down communication between people and families.

Regardless of its merit, I feel it's interesting enough to post.

I guess. I felt the same way after I read Waiting for Godot the first time, but it's come to be one of my favorite all-time plays. I don't know, I think David Lynch's thinking has meaning only to David Lynch.

I think its much more dependent on whos watching rather than who made the film.

I agree. It may mean nothing to one person and it might bring another person to tears.

That's sort of the deal with any art. It speaks to some and not to others.

Just because you don't understand something, doesn't mean you have to come to irrational conclusions.

Check out the salad fingers series!
These sites might be of more use than a StarCraft site, where the majority of posters look on WCIII as the dense misformed fetus produced during Blizzards latest miscarrige.

I got the same impression. Things like "I only wish that they would go somewhere" and "All day ..." make me feel like they're watching the audience watch them on some messed up TV show and they're wondering why they would want to waste their time sitting in front of the television doing nothing.

Anyways it wasn't that unnerving to watch until the second episode, and then I was just like wtf.

I saw this a couple years ago (there's 6 in the series I think). If you don't get it, you don't get it. I don't get it - I refuse to believe that anyone but Lynch himself understands what exactly he was attempting to convey, if anything that is. What I do understand is that art that portrays seemingly nothing is done that way for a reason and I personally believe it is to inspire and evoke introspection. I'll never understand what goes on in David Lynch's head but I can't deny that I haven't come up with conclusions that at least work for me and maybe that's the point.

After re-watching the episodes, it seems that the conversations at some point did make sense but the lines were cut up and moved around. Lines may be in response to another line in the 7th episode in example.

The audience laughs at references to time because they're mocking the rabbits for even bothering to keep track. Time is flowing completely randomly, or maybe not at all.

There's no concrete meaning of these short films - they're meant to portray an emotion, not a specific statement. It's not just open to your own interpretation - I think we're all in agreement that they convey a sense of darkness, foreboding, oppression, dread. It reminds me of Vanilla Sky, in which numbers stations, which really have no meaning for most of us, were used to "create a sense of confusion". To me, these videos are a far cry from meaningless modern art where people just throw random shit together, these videos obviously took editing and time and although they aren't that great it seems better than the average youtube video or tv show. And, seriously, play Yume Nikki.

also the rabbit scenes make logical sense after you watch inland empire. I can't imagine them making any sense without Inland Empire because everything the rabbits say ties in directly with the plot in Inland Empire.

I believe that Rabbits was done before Inland Empire, but they are connected.

I think they can exist apart from each other though.

So maybe they were just a teaser of some sort to inland empire. The dialogue in the shorts, like its after midnight, i have a secret, did you get any calls today, the man in the green jacket, etc, relates directly to inland empire, I don't know how you would interpret it without having seen the movie. For example there is an actual man in green jacket, and the phrase after midnight is repeated throughout the movie.

oh yea and i forgot there is a scene in Inland Empire where in the transition between a scene taking place in reality (sort of) and one of the rabbit scenes, the three members of the family morphs into the three rabbits. However the voices of the rabbits are by laura elena harring, naomi watts and scott coffey which probably stands for something.

I think David Lynch basically said he doesn't understand 100% of what happens in Inland Empire. A lot of his ideas come from meditation, and he said he doesn't always know what they mean.

Also, he said for Inland Empire, he just had a lot of separate ideas and then tied them together with an underlying "story" to make a film. Excellent movie in any case.

I actually wrote down what I think happens exactly in Inland Empire and it is consistent with almost every line in the movie. There's also a fansite that explains pretty well what happens. Like with Mulholland Drive, which had a much clearer storyline that could be understood in a few views, Inland Empire has one specific story. Surrealism tells a tale, the core is very clear, but the expression of surrealism is illogical and difficult to interpret because it mimics the unconscious.

I really was frightened almost to the point where I wanted to stop watching (because i don't like scary things) but it was just human-noid rabbits... like wth?

The laughter broke the tension but the conversation just makes me scared again.

Felt kinda old and been-done.

Add rabbit-coustumes to make it feel surreal, some creepy music with the oh so contrary laughter for mysterious effects. So yeah you can sit and wonder and be introspective, but all in all i think it's all about Lynchs name. Twin Peaks and mulholland was fresh, this is not.
