Every thing I have read is that you simply can't stop the spread. You want to flatten the curve at a level that your health care system can handle. And I think there are a lot of Western countries that have done a good job. The US though, based on this handling they should just eliminate the republican party and have the dem split into Moderates and Progressives (or have more then two parties) because this is what happens when you elect a not very intelligent narcissist who thinks he "gut" is smarter than anyone else's brain.
The worst part is, the Republican states, the ones taking this the lightest are the most rural and have the least amount of access to quality health care.
Just wait for this virus to properly hit Trump country and see how fast the hospitals get overwhelmed out there. They literally do not have the resources to handle even a small outbreak much less an outbreak the size of what California is projected to have.
Source If those folks in the red states were smart they'd be self-isolating even if their government tells them not to. It's going to be much worse for them when it hits them then it will be for New York and California.

Not to defend him but it's kind of normal that the US get more case since it has about 6 times the population of Germany.

Just got my test result - negative. Been at home for almost 2 weeks, can't wait to go back to work.

I suspect that, at the end of this all, there are going to be very few countries we can say did a good job on containing this virus. The infectiousness of this virus is simply mind-boggling; every country seems like it'll get overwhelmed sooner or later. Certainly better to be later rather than sooner (gives more time to prepare, more opportunities to cut down the spread), but part of why it's so easy to find mismanagement in a crisis like this is because of its sheer scope. Seems like all of Europe and every state in the US is approaching disaster.

What does that mean? Were you showing symptoms? Had it, but don't now?

Yeah, for me we're at the point where containment stops being the measuring stick. The sheer mobility of humans in the 21st century, especially in the Western world, made that a near-fantasy (and one with permanent consequences-unless by some miracle this doesn't become endemic). In my mind it's now about how local health authorities respond and how efficiently resources are allocated to them and to the people at home by higher-ups.
I also hope they come up with a better term than "community spread" at the tail end of this-I am not a fan of it meaning "a case whose origin could not be traced internationally by any number of degrees." And that people start to process that it's important to take into account time when comparing responses.

My state is just announced lockdown, rolling over the next 24 hours.
How are you guys already in lockdown holding up? Any tips to stay sane?

US spike is most certainly a result of a huge amount of testing made available recently. One should form an opinion based on death/recovered cases more strongly.
For example Chile vs Argentina. In Chile we have 540 official cases, and only death is an 84 yo lady who couldn't walk already. We are in voluntary lockdown+shutting down business and large gatherings. Tests are available and basically the government is pushing civil iniciative+massive testing and smart isolation.
Argentina has 152 official cases, but already 4 dead with young people. They are in full shutdown now. Truth is, our country is leagues ahead in preparedness (medical supplies etc) and most likely Argentina has more cases but they simply have not been tested.
The idea that the government should just shut down everything forever is simply not feasible. Going back to 1000 b.c. is worse than the disease. Truth seems, as much as it hurts, millions will die worldwide AND the world is gonna hit a massive recession AND "shut down everything indef" is not a solution.

How are you guys already in lockdown holding up? Any tips to stay sane? Been more or less in lockdown for about three weeks myself, since just before this pandemic started seriously affecting the US I caught an uncharacteristically severe case of the flu. Currently pretty well stocked on essentials, because I was worried right before folks started panicking really hard that we'd have supply chain disruptions from this thing, so I stocked accordingly. Not particularly worried about running out of everything, but I am very much curious what the stores look like right now since I only saw mild shortages and everyone who shopped relatively recently is reporting far worse.
It's... kind of boring, but sadly not so far from my normal routine. I'd like to go outside more, but still afraid to even take a walk because the few times I did that while sick I felt utterly miserable. I can do 95% of my work from home, so I do. I imagine that, given that this is a video game forum, a lot of people have at least a few hobbies that are very consistent with staying indoors. But even sports are pretty severely ruined by this thing, which I know have made at least a few people I know go just about insane. Lot of friends who wanted to go to the bar on St. Patrick's day, only to realize it's pointless when there would be nothing to watch anyways.
So far, I think I'm in a much better position than most, and a lot of luck is involved in that. Biggest worries are what family members might get sick (some in poor health, will almost certainly die if infected), and whether it's a recession or a full-on depression that awaits us on the other end of this quarantine. I suppose, regarding the economics aspect at least, we've been through worse. It's still quite depressing to hear about how many people are now in dire financial straits because of virus-related interruptions. Can't just go on worrying forever about what's out of your control, though, and that's probably the biggest "sanity" aspect for me at least.

Starting to hear stories of people (among those I organize with) running out of money and basic resources and not being able to find them at the food pantries and such in their area.
Some of the houseless people are already getting quite desperate (especially with a case confirmed in a local shelter) and another week without money going in their pockets (houseless people have less pedestrians to ask for help) means they will have to make some increasingly difficult choices in the coming weeks.

We'll know for absolutely certain when death rates start spiking in a week or so. It probably has to do with Trump's careless attitude... I recall the EU heavily criticising him when he banned all travellers from the EU.Of course when the EU closed its own borders a few days later that faded away.
As for the US having the most cases, people actually believe the official Chinese numbers? Please.

A lot of responsibility also lies within the governors of their respective states. I sound like a broken record: but the governor of Hawaii is waiting till the last possible moment to lockdown. It’s real fucking telling when most businesses just closes down on their own before the government tells them to. This motherfucker definitely not getting re-elected again.
My friend also got into a possible infection scare. Someone who tested positive (tour guide), rode in the same company truck as him. They tested him within the same day and it came out negative.

Lots of Video Games, Anime and thankfully! GSL is back on.
I have a backlog of books to read for when those distractions run out. Also my apartment hasn't been this clean in ages.

How are you guys already in lockdown holding up? Any tips to stay sane? Make sure to exercise. Doesn't have to be super advanced, basic stuff is probably enough for most of us since we are not in perfect shape. Just make sure to get the pulse up and some core practice as a minimum. Talk to people over internet/phone. Playing coop or team based games is one way to do it. Speaking to colleagues during work hours is another one (though I think we won't have any work hours for a month soon).
