That's ridiculous. I just can't believe you can't be tested. Respiratory issues plus the others should immediately qualify you. Neither flu nor cold typically give you those respiratory symptoms.

What a mess but everything is China's fault ofc, they must pay for this. (they just gave us 1m masks btw) OF COURSE it's China's fault. If they didn't eat f*cking bats in some wet market in Wuhan, we'd have never been in this coronavirus mess. I might sound angry but that's because I'm angry during this lockdown regime in my country. I just want to live my life peacefully and normally. I want to go for a walk, I want to go to work instead of staying home, etc. I want to go to shop after 8 pm, but hey, shop closes at 8 pm during quarantine period. Again, it's because of some guys who thought bats are delicious. Wtf? Not this particular one, sure, but eating wild meat isn't exclusive to China. Bushmeat in Africa is responsible for quite a few zoonotic diseases passing to humans and in the West people eat their fair share of weird game from squirrels to alligators which could do the same.

I think there are lots of places we can point to screwing up, but I don't think it's a good idea to evaluate any strategies as successful yet. Even China and South Korea's. Total shutdown methods are excellent for epidemics, where there is a definitive "yep, we're all done now."
But this isn't an epidemic, it's a pandemic. The reservoir of infection is global and will persist for be at least a year if not more. China and South Korea may act to deal with this-I can imagine isolating all incoming travelers for 14+ days in China, certainly-but it's good to remember nobody anywhere is out of the woods.
Basically, it's futile to judge the efficacy of a quarantine until it lifts. Especially across parts of the world in very different phases of disease transmission.

Yeah, cases in Korea has gone up yesterday, like it did once before after their numbers dropped dramatically like a week ago. Clusters will keep popping up everywhere and they gotta pay whack-a-mole. They do get lots of credit for containing that initial outbreak, though, without going full China.
Can you guys think we can keep this up, this global lockdown I mean, if this continues until the fall? How the hell can people and the economy grind through? This is insane.

That's quite a egocentric renting, do you think you're the only one who wants to live peaceful or who is facing difficulties ? As for condemning a state for the eating habits of a part of his population, that's a big wtf, the chance this kind of bad transmission occurs is very low and can happen. Btw, wild life is quite commonly eaten outside of the West and even here, it happens frequently.

China never said "it's just a flu",Donald Trump did,and Donald Trump kept telling you that the epidemic is nothing serious. When the disease broke out in China 2 months ago, wetsern media were mocking and criticizing us,and your governments just sit there and never prepared for it.And some of you guys never take it seriously until it break out in your country. If your government can't handle a problem, they just throw the buck and blame China or Russia or Iran or North Korea to cover their inefficiency. And you westerners always have a pride and prejudice over China, so such blame is just what I anticipated when I saw your government did nothing like a sitting duck. If I were you,I would blame your government.Since it's has been a fact that China cannot stop the spread to overseas after trying best, there's a lot your government could have done to stop the epidemic, but they never tried to do that but lied to you people.

"Hallway medicine" has been going on for years. Now, hallway medicine is no longer viable due to coronavirus being contagious.

"All across the province you have hospitals at extremely high levels of occupancy," said Dale in an interview with CBC News. "What we're seeing is that it's no longer just during the flu season but it's all year round."
In my personal experience there is a generational war going on between nurses over 45 and nurses under 30 in Ontario. I'd say the nurses over 45 are far more effective at their job than nurses 20 years their junior. The new generation of nurses is great at excuses and creating administrative gridlock to defend their right to be wholly ineffective. Nurses over 45 are much better ad lib problem solvers.
It is rather ironic that Ontario is now begging retired nurses to help with this crisis. https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/coronavirus/retired-health-care-workers-answer-the-call-for-help-amid-covid-19-pandemic-1.4857581
i moved from Ontario, Canada to New York state. Best move I ever made.

Are you blind to the irony in your post? "You westerners always have pride" you say, coming to the defense the country that increasingly tries to insinuate that this virus was planted in China by the US. From the country that continuously blames "foreign meddling" when its facing economic problems and the likes. The prejudice goes both ways.
You say the Western media were mocking (?) and criticizing China. Sure, it was critical, especially when the abject failure of the leadership to tackle the problem in its early state came to light, when the doctors who tried to promote an early reaction were muzzled because they want to maintain the smoke and mirrors and save face.
But what's the big deal with the media criticizing China. Do you not think the media is criticizing Western countries now? There's nothing more obvious to the whole world now that many if not most of the countries in the West completely failed to adequately prepare for this crisis despite the early warning. Don't take it personal. China's State media shits on the West constantly. The West's somewhat-free media shits on everybody. There's no need to be sensitive or nationalistic about this.
It's ok to criticize every country, including China, even though Chinese people and the Chinese media are not allowed to. Maybe it takes some getting used to.

I hope we can avoid any type of china vs the west type of reaction, or discussion, here. Playing the blame game is stupid and counter-productive, I am very happy that China is willing and able to use excess resources to help western countries combat it, and we should all consider this a fight we are in, together, rather than be boggled down by petty nationalistic squabbles.

I'm down to two rolls of toilet paper. I'm rationing the one and de-plying the other. Once I'm completely out, I'm converting my shower into a makeshift bidet.

You can definitely blame China for how they handled the virus initially, for how the virus came about in the first place via bushmeat etc. They are 100% responsible for that. They started the small fire.
But the reason it turned into an inferno was not because of China, as they took drastic measures to keep the flame small. It's because many other countries didn't take the virus seriously and implemented serious measures to contain the spread. They turned a blind eye to the small fire for 1 month+ and now have an inferno to deal with. You have stupid French people protesting or gathering outside PSG stadium in a closed door game despite advisory. Now you have American youths partying now in Florida for spring break.
Blame China for the fire, but don't blame them for the inferno.

Finished my second shift back on the job, as essentially an hospital staff dispatcher, still fairly smouth, but it's definitly all hands on deck for what's coming, our bosses told us they except to be missing staff starting in the middle of next week. (Now they are trying to form the staff in various position to have more option if we need to solve some lack of personel) They are also checking for working for home in the office but with the security mesure on the computer systems, it may not happen. Also probably wouldn't happen in my own position since I work the next 24h and always work at least in tandem, we couldn't really coordinate by mail.
As a low level scrub who just comeback I have to say I don't feel particularly informed about the ins and out of what we actually have to do once it hit, but I guess I'll learn as it go.
With that said, I don't feel there's any panic.

With that said, I don't feel there's any panic. My friend's girlfriend is a respiratory therapist in Montreal and her hospital's guidelines (or something) suggest that shit is going to get crazy around March 24th here. I have no idea how they can determine that or make an educated guess at it but that's what I've heard.

On the bright side we got a head start seeing the mess in asia and europe, so our authorities were kind of scared and took some measures.
But on the other side I think more needs to be done asap, like cancelling all gatherings (currently only the ones with more than 200 people are), cinemas, theaters, etc.
Classes are still running and I think they should be cancelled. Most companies are waiting on official announcements to make any move, so government inactivity translates into more vectors in private companies as well.
Right now measures are getting stricter day by day, maybe by next week we will be on full lockdown. Slowly approaching full lockdown in Argentina. So far: - classes cancelled. - no big gatherings (theaters, cinemas, big markets, weddings, spots events, etc are closed or cancelled). - most private companies enforcing work from home schemes. - government analyzing using home office for public workers as well, specially for parents whose kids have to stay at home now. - all flights from outside grounded (just the national airline with flights to bring people from abroad back). They will be limiting travelling inside the country as well. - fines for people who break their quarantines. Probably some measures coming for small companies (pubs, restaurants, etc) to alleviate their business loss.
Argentina just went into full lockdown starting tomorrow.
Mostly because people are dumb and are not following the rules, and the government is afraid of cases ramping up and getting a negative reaction from the public.
We have a 4 day long weekend coming and people were already heading for the coast to get to the beach, etc. I had to go to the market today to get some supplies and I saw people exercising on the street, walking their dog, in the barber, etc.
So starting tomorrow police will be on the streets checking who is out and why. You can only go out close to your house for basic provisions (food, medicine, etc) and only people who work in critical areas (hospitals, energy, delivery, etc) will be allowed to be on the streets.
For now this is until the 31th of March, but it will probably be extended if the cases keep on growing.
