Apparently, for all traffic lights, there is a sensor next to the light that senses when ambulances or police cars are coming (I'm pretty sure of this actually).
What is amazing is that the code is apparently something that a universal remote can be hijacked to send too. Can I get some input on this? Seems pretty easy to do if you have a universal remote. Granted I'm a student without TV, but someone on this forum must have one.

hm probably it may be possible to do, but i dont think that the code you have to program is as easy as 911.

sounds like an april's fool joke too me. besides that, the sensor is under the road afaik, might be wrong on this one though.
|
afaik, the shit is all on timers, no sensors involved at all
oh, and that video is bullshit
|
I don't know where you're from, but around here... ambulances and emergency vehicles don't change traffic lights. Everyone just slows down or stops, then whoever is in front of the ambulance moves until they're out of the way.
I think that video is full of crap. I've never heard about anything like this.

I don't know where you're from, but around here if a light is red at an intersection and there's a shitton of traffic in the way, the ambulance changes the light. It definitely happens, and those signlas are definitely real.

There are sensors in the ground for many, if not most of them.

It is, but there's a flashing light on top of the things. The video quite clearly showed that.

hehe, ya, ambulances all time their runs so the traffic light turns green.. psht, duh obviously.... huh? maybe your intelligence is an april fools joke =} . not that the video is completely legit... just wanted to see if someone had a remote to give it a try.

This is the dumbest thing i've ever read! There is no sensors in traffic lights, lol who's stupid enough to believe that? :D.

so now i wonder about canada and mexico...

eh? speed/power? it's a signal ur sending not a missile lol...

As a Dane you should know better
They (the Danish government) once considered experimenting with sensors in traffic lights so emergency vehicles could move unhinderede trough the traffic, but the idea was dropped, because of its abusiveness.
Here we just stop or drive in to the side if there's an emergency vehicle coming.

This is real and it's nothing new...

New to me.

|
yeah there's sensors in stop lights. try flashing your brights a few times at a red light, sometimes it works ;D
|
Btw, this is not true of every stoplight in the country. I've seen police and ambulance's run red lights numerous times in heavy traffic. I think they only add these in more metropolitan cities.
|
Which would make it not worth it to go to jail and/or fined $10,000.
FYI: I don't think I've ever seen this in NY. Maybe it's the more newly built metropolitan cities.

SOME traffic lights have them.

I've never seen this in Germany for sure :>

its defintiely select cities if its real. ive got around 80k here and its defintiely not going on here.
|
i dunno if its real, but there is a guy who got arrested for buying something off ebay that could change lights
he did it every morning at like 530 or something
and eventually they figured out that the light kept malfunctioning as soon as his van arrived..

Idea does seem probable. If you look closely sometimes at certain lights there's a small, black, upright cylinder with what seems like a IR sensor sticking out of it. It could be a camera or numerous other things but the idea doesn't seem too far fetched. However, i doubt it would be possible to make a universal remote that will activate the sensor. There's no way for you to find out what the proper signal is since it doesn't seem to be universalized, and i doubt you'll be able to send a signal far enough to make it practical. If your range on the remote is only 20 feet it'll require you to slow down to like 10 mph unless you wanta risk running a red light and smacking into some unsuspecting motorist .

way to take what i said out of context, moron

They can be hacked but not with a remote control.. -_-

haha. loser. try writing better so u make sense.

Don't the emergency vehicles turn all the lights red and just run the red light? I don't think they turn them green if thats even possible, the abuse/hack problem is why. I know near most traffic signals there is a control box and if you have a key you can set the lights to cycle differently, or all hold red, or flash red etc. My tweeker friend's dad was a police chief he had all these keys and wierd shit that cops have to control things. I don't think flashhing light sensors changes lights. This sounds like a job for Adam & Jamie
* That video is definitely a hoax. Even if it did work the range on a remote for your tv would never be enough.
PS- I've also heard that if you press the crosswalk button 100 times as fast as you can it will change the light to let you walk. I'm pretty sure that doesn't work.
|
There's always different things. Some are controlled under the ground, some lights react to the specific light from the police's flashing lights.
That's why you see certain drivers flash their highbeam when the light isn't changing quickly enough.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_signal_preemption http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_lights#Unauthorised_pre-emption
+ Show Spoiler +There have been some concerns that unauthorized people may have obtained devices that can trigger light preemption. The original 3M Opticom pre-emption system was activated by a 14 Hz strobe light added to the light bar of fire trucks, ambulances, and squad cars. When the sensor senses the 14 Hz strobe signal, the pre-emption is activated. The 14 Hz "secret" was eventually discovered, and MIRTs (Mobile InfraRed Transmitters) hit the market, consisting of a 14 Hz strobe with an infrared filter installed on it to make the light invisible to the naked eye. The use or sale of such devices in an unauthorized context was made illegal in the United States in 2005.
In some jurisdictions, traffic lights are set to turn red in all directions when the pre-emption system is activated, rather than holding one direction green to allow an emergency vehicle to proceed with traffic. This stops all traffic except for emergency vehicles, which are permitted to proceed through a red signal anyway, and thus removes much of the incentive for an unauthorized person to manipulate the pre-emption system to their own benefit.
3M has developed an encrypted Opticom system.[5] However, jurisdictions already using the original system would have to replace the original traffic signal sensors and vehicle-mounted emitters in order to use the encrypted system.
There have been recent concerns about the security of traffic light preemptive systems and the actual underlying network controlling them and traffic lights in general. An article in the hacker E-zine Phrack has outlined flaws in the traffic controlling system that could allow an unauthorized malicious person to abuse it as he sees fit. By issuing valid signal controlling messages from the area traffic control center if access is gained to it, an attacker could essentially control any phase, test phase, preemptive signals, or any function of the traffic system that is controllable remotely. The article also sparked a response by Transport for London where it is reported that a skilled attacker armed with this “step-by-step” guide could in fact cause malicious damage, as reported by a Transport for London spokesman..

This exists, it works, and it's incredibly illegal. You're allowed to have one, but if you're found using it, good luck in life.

Try 1000 then. Or some number in between. I bet it works
